ME STA RT Spelthorne *41 Annual Report 2023/2024 We're there for parents when they need us most because childhood can't wait. Reg. Charity No. l 160026

Because childhood can't wait Home-start Spelthorne is an independent charity, and since 1996 has been supporting families in the Borough of Spelthorne to identify their unique needs and as5iSt them in developing the skills and confidence necessary to build better lives for themselves and their children. Over the last 28 years Home-start has received over 2300 referrals from many different organisations and has supported thousands of children in the Borough of Spelthorne. Home-start Spelthorne is managed and funded locally. We are affiliated to the national organisation, Home-start UK which offers advice, training, information and guidance to the Home-start network to ensure consistent and quality support for parents and children. Home-start offers a unique service. We recruit and train volunteers who are usually parents themselves to visit families at home who have at least one child under 5. We offer them informal, friendly and confidential support. We tailor our support to each family and their specific needs, and we work with the whole family; providing a package of support, comprised of emotional and practical support, activities with children and help to access services. To help give children the best possible start in life, Home-start supports parents as they grow in confidence, strengthen their relationship with their children and widen their links with the local community. Home-start Spelthorne is Community based and led by local need Based on a relationship of trust built between volunteer and family with evidence showing both parties benefit Outcome-focused, with a focus on empowering families and volunteers Our values We offer families choice We work in partnership - with each other, with families, and with other agencies We work in a spirit of openness, encouragement and enjoyment We are flexible and responsive to the needs of families ••••••••oooooo

Chairperson's report It is my privilege to present the Chair's Annual Report for 2023-24. Home-start Spelthorne continues to thrive, despite the serious financial challenges we faced, and continue to battle. Although we secured financial support from Spelthorne Borough Council, Children in Need, National Lottery and Community Foundation for Surrey. along with other smaller short-term funding donations, consistent funding remains a serious priority. Our Family Support team assisted 216 children from 98 families. and they continue to do all they can to expand our reach across Spelthorne. Retainingvolunteers amid growing demands has been difficult, although ourvolunteer base overthe year, of 36, remained reasonably stable. To enable Home-start Spelthorne to better meet the home-visiting needs within ourcommunity, it is ourtargeted ambition to build on this number, and to invest in volunteer well-being and retention. The rising demand for our services within Spelthorne put a strain on our resources, but we continue to develop strategies to manage this without sacrificingthe quality. Home-start Spelthorne remains committed to ensuring ourfinances directly benefitthe familieswe serve. As part of my annual report, it is the Chair's responsibility and pleasure to acknowledge and thank all the special people to worked so hard to ensure we are still here today supporting local families. Our home-visiting volunteers are very precious to us. without them we could not be the special local Home-start we are. We thank them for all their dedication and support. Our hard-working staff team; special thanks go to them all. We would not have survived the year without you. Namely, Mandy Groves, Scheme Manager, Michelle Herring, Family Support Manager, Debs Dennehy, Family Support Co-ordinator, Bernie Jones, Family Support Co- ordinator, and Hazel Want, Office Co-ordinator. Our Trustees are an amazingly special group of people who step up to the plate whenever they are needed, and as Chair I greatly value their support. They are, Kevin Bulfin IHRI, Anne Damerell (Treasurer), Barbara Griffin (Friends}, Tina Hunt, Christine Knight {PR & Fundraising), Mick Price (Vice Treasurer), Sue Price. Dianne Roberts (Safeguarding), Jenny Sice, Viv Talkington (Wellbeing). Our Patron, Jean Pinkerton OBE, continues to support our cause, and promote Home-start Spelthorne in thewidercommunity. Our Friends group has grown into an amazing group of people who organise, and support fundraising events. We thank you for allyou do. Last, but no means least, our thanks go to all our funders and supporters. You all continue to help Home-start Spelthorne make a difference. Thank you! Vivian Williams

Treasurer's report Life in the voluntsry sector is always precarious, but we have never before had such a roller-coasteryear as 23-24. We had made a loss of £15K the year before. Funding had ended from BBC Children in Need and from the Heartlands contract, and was expected to decrease from Surrey CC. There was a large shortfall to make up, and fundraising applications were being refused. We were seriously discussing reducing the scheme. Then things began to pick up. Successful fundraising bids included £20K from the lottery, £15K from BUPA, £IOK from the Community Foundation and £8K from Home-start UK. Spelthorne BC gave us £31K from a new fund, in addition to their usual grant. They are now our principal funders and we are extremely grateful. Cllr Mooney managed to squeeze another £80K out of the Heartlands contract, of which £15K came to us. Tom Hunt, the son of one of our trustees, raised £IOK (with more coming in 24-251 by doing sponsored push-ups. By the end of the financial year we had more in reserves than ever before and were able to give our staff a well-deserved pay rise. It is our pleasure to record our thanks to the many donors and friends who have contributed to this improvement. They are listed on the inside back cover. Our amazing fundraising committee is a never-ending source of good ideas, and the hard work needed to implement them. We were able to give each family a really good Christmas present again this year, to cheer up a hard winter. IFINISHEIV. r+}.¥• I" ,PAT Financial risks and procedures are reviewed regularly, and we have agreed an ethical fundraising policy. We have satisfied our reserves policy, which ststes that at least six months costs will be held in reserve to meetextra expense. The charity has no debts secured bycharges on itsassets, and has given no guarantees leadi ng to potential liabi lities. The treasurer team has been much enhanced by Mick Price agreeing to be Vice-treasurer. He is sharing the burden of work and producing splendid graphics to explain the finances to trustees. Home-stsrt Spelthorne has a reallyfirst-rate team of staff and volunteers, backed by a strong management committee. Our thanks go to all of them and to our helpful auditor David Thomas. Anne Damerell and Michael Price

Scheme Manager's report What a turbulent year 2023-24 has beenl Autumn of 2023 was a worrying time for our scheme, with the threat of reducing our service due to lack of funding. However, the sUPPOrt we received from our supporters was amazing. We survived and ended the year in a positive position, supporting even more families. Our Christmas appeal raised over £1,000, and with donations from our Family Fund, Staines Preparatory School, Wave Radio Mission Christmas, and our local food banks, we managed to get some bespoke gifts for families, including warm clothes, toys, and festive treats. Research shows that children raised in a stable family environment are more likely to have a positive and healthy future. Our volunteers are ordinary people who reach out, take a hand, and together make a difference that lasts a lifetime. By focusing on individual needs, Home-start helps families identify their own strengths, increasing their potential to make changes that will improve their lives. We are fortunate to have a fantastic team of dedicated people at Home-start who continue to work tirelessly, including staff, trustees, volunteers, and friends. Our volunteers and staff are caring, compassionate individuals who give an incredible amount of time and support to families most in need. These wonderful people help parents and carers grow in confidence, become less socially isolated, access services and local community resources, and build resilience. A heartfelt thank you to each of them. A thank you must also go to the families who welcome us into their homes and personal lives, sharingtheir innermost feelings and worries with us. We must not lose sight of the privileged and trusted position they place us in. Additionally, we extend our gratitude to colleagues and partners who have shown much goodwill in supporting ourwork, offering their skills and expertise, and sharing their resources. Our Picnic in the Park was a great success, and families across the Borough had a chance to have fun. Thanks go to all our helpers on the day, including The Resource Centre, our friends from Bupa, and the staines Society of Model Engineers. Looking ahead to 2024-2025, we still face fundingconcerns, but we remain positive and are determined to continue thriving and beingthere for parents and their children in Spelthorne. Mandy Groves

l just cannot fault any part of Home-start, it's an amazing organisation. Despite difference of faith and background everyone in Home-start has always been supportive and interested in relevant matters. My son absolutely adored our volunteer and every week no matter what goes on he always gets happy and excited when she turns up. He has become much more aware and conscious of how he can help others. I have been able to have social interaction and emotional and practical support from a consistent source and {my volunteer has) been able to build a lovely bond with the children. Home-start made me feel less isolated and a lot more confident. particularly in my ability to parent. My children adored our volunteer and looked forward to our weekly encounter. They also got Mummy to themselves at times when before it was not possible. We were matched with a perfect volunteer. Home-start was informative, friendly and genuine. Home-start has helped with my confidence getting out & about & it has also helped a lot with me being able to get things done around the house. My daughter isn't that good with other people & can be really clingy so this has helped her get used to ott7er people. Home- Start just helped a lot and I'm very grateful to have received the help. My volunteer has been amazing talking me through everything and so good with the baby. It's been lovely having the company and help. Volunteer was very good at giving varied support depending on what was needed. She was perfect for our family. l am always very grateful to the team at Home-start. As a special need child's mum, I was struggling physically and mentally for a long time. They taught me about self-love and self- care. They helped me with my son's school placement and to find a proper school for him. They helped with the transport problems to get him to school. Whenever I had issues Home- Start was always there to help. Our volunteer visited every week for two hours also calling to check whether everything was OK with me. My son and daughter both loved her volunteer she was so friendly and caring. I will always be very grateful. Home-start has been my biggest support gave me infom7ation and support that I've not received from anyone else. Whenever I've needed advi￿ or to offload they have always been there in my time of need, whether I was having a down moment or needed to ask for help in how to deal with my son's meltdowns, they have always replied to me or called me orpopped in. Home-start have been 9￿at from the moment I got in contact. Thank you. Our volunteer was absolutely amazing, a brilliant help. Our children adored her and looked forward to seeing her every week. She gave me an extra pair of hands and enhanced my children s lives. She fitted in very easily. She had an easy manner and was easy to work with. Thank you. So not many people know this but for the last 6 months we had an amazing volunteer helping us with our son, he loved seeing her. We was introduced to this lovely lady through a charity called Home-start Spelthorne, I never heard of them until we was introduced to them from our support worker. Home-start is an amazing charity and are always there for you if and when you need them (l especially like them as they don't judge! } well after 6 months we have officially been signed oftl. We are really happy but we are sad at the same time as they have been a massive part of our lives. I've had a lot of support from different organisations, but my Home-start volunteer is the BEST. She listened and made me feel empowered. She has helped me see the positives and had taught me to never give up.

Volunteering for Home-start Spelthorne Jane has spent several years volunteering for Home-start Spelthorne From redundant Nanny to Mary Poppins I found myself a retired, semi-redundant Nanny. My three lovely Grandsons didn't need me for the school pickups, sleep overs, games of hide and seek and trips to the park like they used to. Yes, I was still fundraising for a local children's charity and doing a bit of that'ladies who do lunch, thing, but I needed something else. And then I remembered. Some years ago, I got talking to a lovely lady on the Home-start Spelthorne stall at Shepperton Fair. She told me all about the charity and what they did, it really hit a chord with me, and I thought, maybe that's something I could do when I retire. I'd married and had my two daughters when I was in myearly twenties. Itwas a challengingtime, as I soon realised what hard work and how difficult it sometimes is being a new young Mum, children aren't born with a handbook. I was very fortunate, I had a wonderful husband, who was so supportive and a great hands-on Dad. My amazing network of friends, family and even neighbours werethere to support me. I got to really enjoy being a Mum and watch my daughters grow and thrive, I was lucky. So, my Home-startjourney began. l attended a six one day a week course, it was very informative and a great opportunity to meet other volunteers and the wonderful supportive team. During the first session I was asked who my inspiration was, and I said, Mary Poppins. We know she was practically perfect in every way, perhaps a bit of a tall order for me but something to aspire to maybe? Two and half years later, just like Mary Poppins I've flown in (okay, driven or walked) to support and help four local families. All with differing needs. some have been isolated during lockdown and become nervous to go out and meet people. Mums with mental health issues who have lost confidence in themselves. Families with no family close by to support them. Children who have ADHD and autism, separation anxiety and are displaying challenging behaviour. Just like Mary Poppins I try to spotthe issues, help to resolve them and leave myfamilies on a path to help themselves Wlthout me. And I do take my magic bag with me to all my visits. In it are a range of donated toys, puzzles and books and sometimes little treat5, but sadly no magic mirror, lamp, or hatstand. Some families have plenty of toys, some have very little, but as we have all experienced other people's toys are much more excitingthan your own. I spend my time playing with the children and yes, I've gotto play hide and seek again. I've taken families to play group and sometimes just the children. I sometimes think I enjoyed the craft sessions more than them. I sit with the Mums, to listen and talk through how they are doing and plan movingforward with how I can supportthe families. The families are my inspiration, it's not easy to say you need help. I'm a great talker (ask any of my family or friends), but being a volunteer has helped me to be a better listener and appreciate what I have. There's no better purpose than to put in to action our abilityto make something better. In return, we make ourselves bettertoo. When l fly on from myfamilies, I loveto get messages from them saying how well they are doing. There's something very special in becoming a friend, supporting and helping them through difficult times, hopefully one day they will become volunteers too. I don'tthink I've quite made the Mary Poppins grade, she's atough actto follow. I would highly recommend anyone who is thinking of becoming a Home-start Spelthorne Volunteer to get involved. Give it a go, what are you waiting for, spit, spot, there's room under my umbrella, for plenty more Mary Poppins. Jane's Home-start Volunteer Cake Recipe Ingredients Method I volunteer Mix all the ingredients together with. One cup of parenting experience 1. 6-8 weeks one day training A large pinch of caring 2. Ongoing training and updating sessions One large cup of listeningskills 3. Being matched with families and spending 2-3 hours per week A sprinkle of common sense supporting them Adash of compassion 4. Support from Home-start coordinators and Managers 5. Meeting othervolunteers to share ideas and experiences 6. Fundraising events, picnic in the park, quiz and local fetes.

And finally) the cherry on the tOP> knowingthat you have made a difference. Review from my most recent family 'lt has helped us so much. it has given us breathing space and support. My daughter was so clingy to me, she really struggled at first but soon she had a great time with our lovely volunteer. Jane was so lovely, and really got involved in our mad chaotic home. The children loved her. Home-start Spelthorne took time to really get to know our family and thought outside the box as to how they could best help us. We did some different things, and it worked so well and gave me time and space and supported my daughter. One day I would love to volunteer for Home-start Spelthorne." Issy has been with Home-start Spelthorne since March 2024 Volunteering, it can seem a daunting word, a word that feels like it could suck time & can be exhausting. However, volunteering for Home-start is far from all those things. Firstly, working with the Home-start team is fun and informative. During the Volunteer Introduction Course, you cover a range of topics some new, but lots to help improve knowledge on many topics such as mental health, development of young children & how to engage with people of different backgrounds & cultures. The course which runs over 6-8 weeks is engagingand fun, with an excellent lunch and snack selection as a bonus! Bythe end of the course, you will have built the confidence and skill set needed to set you on your way to supporting families. I started volunteering with Home-start in March 2024 & I have loved every minute. The support we offer can range from providing company. helping increase confidence in parenting, a listening ear, helping families get out more& many otherareas of support. Commitment is one visit perweek, between 2-3 hours. When I first met my family, we talked through how I can help them, what their goals are to make sure our time together is used well & helps metothink ahead ofthings I can do to help. The most importantthing is to build trust of each other, especially as the family are welcoming you into their home. As the weeks progress the trust builds. and the family really get to enjoy the extra support. What is my reward? I have been supporting a local family with 4 children who needed an extra pair of hands. Seeing Mums face and the children's faces light up when you walk in the door is reward enough but then having 2-3 hours to enjoy playing without any expectations is so much fun. We enjoy spending time in the home, playing with toys from my bag of goodies, such as stacking cups, building blocks & playing with characters. We've also been to playgroups, walks by the river playing pooh sticks, rhyme time, met new people & enjoyed playing with new toys. However, ourfavourite activity so far has been swimming. This is something Mum would find hard to do alone, but when we team up - we are ace!! The smiles & laughter we've had in the pool are priceless, even Mum has built her confidencel Each week Mum is more and more confident & looking forward to going out to try new things with me. I'm not doing anything special. I'm offering my hands and my ears for a couple of hours each week. I have so much more to offer than I first thought, having three children of my own who are all in double digits I was confident to play with the children & help families practically, but I can offer so much more to the families we support. Knowledge of the local playgroups, good parks, how to registerfor nursery / pre- school, filling out forms for financial support etc are all important parts of the volunteering role & can offer families additional help to the practical side. Being honest I first thought I'd struggle with the commitment because life can be busy and ever changing, but with good communication with your family you can work around both of your schedules (either with a set time or a time that changes each week to suit your needs) really making it the most rewarding volunteering I've done. If you're considering volunteering, I really do encourage you to go for it, not only will you change the life of a family in need, but you'll also learn new things & meet some lovely people along the way. ••••••••oooooo
