Its distinctive name can be explained by the fact that the charity’s founders were drawn from **Guy's Hospital Penguins** , the oldest team (the “veterans”) in the oldest rugby club in the world (Guy’s Hospital Rugby Football Club). But now its members come from a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and professions, all uniting to raise money in support of: - cancer awareness - cancer research - cancer treatment - hospices Our motto is "Dare Quam Accipere", which translates from Latin into "It is better to give than to receive". ## **Scope of This Document** The scope of this document is to provide succinct, relevant information on our charity during our financial year to 5 April 2023, in accordance with Section 7 of the Charity Commission’s document “Charity reporting and accounting: the essentials” (January 2013) to these key stakeholders: - **A.** The Charity Commission - **B.** Our members and fundraisers - **C.** The recipients of our grants It also serves to provide information to the wider general public, which may stimulate interest in becoming a PAC Member. ## **Charity Registration Number & Registered Office** Our charity registration number is 1159905 and our contact address is: Weirs End, Hampton Court Road, East Molesey, Surrey, KT8 9BP 3 **Summary Description of the Purposes (Objects) of the Charity** ## **D. The Aim of PAC** Our aim is the advancement of health and the saving of lives of people affected by cancer. ## **E. Our Mission Statement** Penguins Against Cancer (PAC) is to raise **£1 million** , in order to make a significant contribution to the fight against cancer. ## **F. Our Objectives** Our objectives are: - i. raising awareness of cancer. - ii. making grants to individuals and organisations involved in cancer research. - iii. making grants to individuals and organisations involved in cancer treatment and hospices. ## **Main Activities of the Charity** ## **G. Fundraising** PAC fundraising activities are many and diverse and include (but are not limited to): sponsored cycle rides, formal fundraising dinners, charity golf days, raffles, auctions of donated items, charity runs and occasional sales of “Penguins” merchandise (e.g., Christmas cards). All PAC fundraising events are designed to be both altruistic and fun, celebrating memories and achievements, rather than mourning loss. We also encourage members to support us through regular (monthly) standing order donations, direct to the charity bank account. In addition to these regular monthly donations, other funds, such as one-off donations, or fund-raising events, have been facilitated via an established online fundraising system in this 2022-23 reporting year: **GoFundMe** . There are further details under **Administrative Costs** . 4 ## **B. Disbursement of Grants** Grants are disbursed from funds raised to individuals and organisations nominated by PAC members, many of whom have had loved ones fall victim to cancer. **To-date (to April 2023) PAC has disbursed 96 grants** **totalling £301,000, to raising cancer awareness, cancer research, cancer treatment, and hospices.** Organisations supported in this reporting period: **Institute of Cancer Research, The Urology Foundation, Sarcoma UK, St. Christopher's Hospice, Pancreatic Cancer UK, Sam Beare Hospice, North Dorset Marie Curie Cancer Care Centre, Target Ovarian Cancer, St. Raphael’s Hospice, Prostate Cancer UK, and Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice.** Our approach enables support to be targeted to particular individuals and organisations which makes the process of staging events to raise money personal, vivid and special. It allows those bereaved and otherwise affected to contribute directly and tangibly to the memory of the cancer victim. ## **C. Research Grants** **The Fergus Scholefield Cancer Research Award (“The Fergus Fund”)** In 2016 Penguins Against Cancer announced the establishment of The Fergus Scholefield Cancer Research Fund, in memory of a brave young man who, at the tender age of 2, battled through the treatment of his brain tumour with the support of family and friends. Sadly, it was not possible to cure him of the disease and Fergus died before his third birthday. His journey and strength has inspired PAC members and supporters, and many more, to improve the lives of others and continue the search for better understanding and treatments for cancer. This PAC Research Award is granted annually, through a rigorous vetting process, to support researchers to keep pushing the boundaries in cancer research and to ensure that Fergus’s short life will continue to motivate people for many years to come. The **2022 Award** of £5,000 went to Dr Stella Man of the **Institute of Cancer Research** . Dr Man’s grant will contribute to funding research into Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumours (DSRCT) which are a rare and aggressive cancer that affects young people between 10 and 30 years old. 5 ## **Structure, Governance and Management** The Constitution for Penguins Against Cancer was adopted on the 13 December 2014. A copy of our Constitution is available at all times for viewing on our website ( **www.penguinsagainstcancer.org.uk** ), under “ **Governance** ”. The Charity is staffed entirely by its members, who are **all unpaid volunteers** . A selection of members are elected each year as Officials and Trustees at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Officials and Trustees wishing to stand for a term greater than one year require annual re-election via the AGM. One Annual General Meeting, plus (at least) three Trustees’ Meetings take place in the course of each year. Each meeting is attended by at least four Trustees in order to be quorate and to vote on motions put forward. A list of Trustees in post as at the date of this Report & Accounts being approved (2[nd] December 2023) is published as **Appendix 1** in this document. Monies raised by the charity are disbursed as grants according to nominations made by members; such nominations are made by two members (or one Member supported by a Trustee) and approved by a majority of Trustees expressing an opinion, and in all cases by at least four Trustees. All details of grants disbursed to-date are viewable on the “ **Grants** ” section of our website ( **www.penguinsagainstcancer.org.uk/grants** ), including PAC letters which accompanied the grant cheques. Letters of thanks from the grant recipients, confirming receipt of their grants as well as how the monies will be spent, are also published on our website, under “ **Thanks** ” ( **www.penguinsagainstcancer.org.uk/thanks** ). 6 ## **Administrative Costs** Penguins Against Cancer has **no** running costs or administrative costs to dilute the money donated by supporters, so every penny received from donations goes directly to the fight against cancer*: All administration time and skills are kindly donated free of charge by PAC members. Any associated admin costs are also funded by PAC members out of their own pockets. _* [Donations by supporters to PAC via the established online fundraising GoFundMe site (December 2021 onwards) have small levels of commission deducted at source, however this is more than offset by the amount of GiftAid (see below) PAC receives from such online donations.]_ ## **Gift Aid** This well-established government scheme allows UK charities like us to claim back the basic rate tax already paid on donations by the donor. This means we can legitimately claim back from the Government 25p for every £1 donated, **boosting the value of such donations by a quarter** , provided that the donor is a UK taxpayer and pays more in income tax annually than the amount we are claiming. ## **Communication** Our website ( **www.penguinsagainstcancer.org.uk** ) is our main form of communication to our members, and to the wider public. It provides full details of our fundraising activities (both past and future), together with all relevant information about the charity, including compliance with governance and records of official meetings held. It is kept up to date by a dedicated volunteer Webmaster, we also have a volunteer Social Media Manager who creates posts for PAC on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We communicate regularly by WhatsApp group and electronic newsletter to our member base, using the MailChimp proprietary email platform, which provides us with secure, reliable communication. 7 ## **Details of Relevant Organisations to the Charity** **Our Bank:** NatWest Bank 45 Park Street Camberley Surrey GU15 3PA **Our Independent Examiner:** Wayne Harris THB Accountants 1 & 2 Studley Court Mews Studley Court Guildford Road Chobham Surrey GU24 8EB ## **Public Benefit Statement** We hereby confirm that the charity’s Trustees have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the commission in exercising their powers or duties. 8 ## **2022-23 Financial Review** ## **Receipts:** - i. PAC’s receipts for the year totalled **£76,115.25.** - ii. Of this, £39,451.05 (52% of the total) came via GoFundMe (after their 1.9% fee was deducted £606.08) and £36,574.20 (48% of the total) came direct to the PAC NatWest account. - iii. Of the GoFundMe donations £31,284.69 came from Cycling (Tower to Tower and the Penguin Peloton), £3,143.81 from the participation in the Ironbourne Triathlon and £4,777.50 from Gift Aid. Gift Aid was raised on 13.8% of the donations via GoFundMe. - iv. Of the donations direct to the NatWest account, a total of £9,250 came from 1,425 individual, monthly standing order donations (which is 25% of the direct donations). The other direct donations are from such things as one-offs, raffles, GKTWRFC, etc. - v. One very significant and generous donation of £20,000 was made during the year. ## **Payments:** - i. A total of **£69,000** was disbursed as outgoing payments by PAC during this reporting year as grants to cancer research, cancer treatment and cancer care hospices. (versus £48,100 disbursed in the previous year, 2021-22) - ii. All 2022-23 grants are detailed in **Appendix 2** of this report. ## **Reserves to Carry Forward at Year-End:** - i. **£7,115.25** is the net residual amount from this year’s financial activities (£76,115.25 of receipts, less £69,000 disbursed); - ii. **£8,326.17** of cash reserves were carried forward from the previous year (2021-22); - iii. Giving total reserves to carry-forward into 2023-24 of **£15,441.42** . - iv. Reserves policy: the charity has no administrative (staff) costs and so operates on a “zero reserves” policy, but typically with a cash buffer of around £5,000. 9 ## **Independent Examiner's Report** ## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of** ## **Penguins Against Cancer** ## **Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Penguins Against Cancer ('the Charity')** I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 5[th] April 2023. ## **Responsibilities and basis of report** As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act'). The Charitie’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Act and that an independent examination is needed. I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. ## **Independent examiner's statement** I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or 3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
