## **Annual Report from the Chair**

The objects of the Charitable incorporated Organisation, which are based on Christian principles, operating as part of the Trussell Trust Foodbank Network, are the prevention or relief of poverty in Nuneaton and surrounding areas, in particular but not exclusively by providing emergency food supplies to individuals in need and/or charities, or other organisations working to prevent or relieve poverty.

Such charitable purposes for the public benefit are exclusively charitable, according to the laws of England and Wales, as the trustees may from time to time determine.

The primary activity of the charity is to provide food to people in crisis in Nuneaton and the surrounding area.

Nuneaton Foodbank receives regular and generous donations of food from a network of stores, businesses, religious groups and individuals across the town. Nuneaton Foodbank distributes food from four centres, and each opens twice a week.

Following advice in March 2020 from the Trussell Trust and central government, Nuneaton Foodbank put in place clear operating procedures to ensure the safety of volunteers working in the four centres and the warehouse, in response to the COVID crisis. These procedures remain in place.

As many of the key referral agencies were still working from home, we continued a programme of training lead managers from these agencies, which enabled them to issue evouchers to clients, and also to cascade training to frontline workers. Together with information, which was regularly updated on our website, this ensured that clients in crisis were able to access foodbank help and support.

We were also able to apply for grants and additional financial support to enable the foodbank to effectively meet the needs of the local community.

The roll out of the ‘Upstream’ project began in January 2021, which enabled three local foodbanks to direct clients to fast response help and advice from BRANCAB – our local Citizens Advice team.

In March 2021 Trustees agreed to hire a van to facilitate collections from donors and deliveries to the four foodbank centres from a local company. This will be reviewed during the coming year.

In September the foodbank had to vacate the warehouse in Priory Street following advice from the local Environmental Health team, as there had been a severe problem with mice. We were advised that we should no longer use the warehouse, as it didn’t conform to current standards. We have had temporary use of Fife Street Wesleyan Reform Church hall for storage of food, but are searching for suitable warehouse accommodation.

In November 2021 Trustees appointed a Project and Operations Manager for the Nuneaton Foodbank.

In December the Bedworth Foodbank ceased operating, and clients are now coming from Bedworth to use the four Nuneaton foodbank centres.

Nuneaton Foodbank works with local partner organisations and ‘signposts’ clients to sources of additional support and advice, such as debt and money management advice, to help move clients out of the crisis situation that has meant that they have needed the services of the foodbank.

During the year 1[st] January 2021 to 31[st] December 2021 Nuneaton Foodbank distributed 44.4 tons of food to the general public, with an in-kind value estimated at £79,111.

Food continued to be distributed throughout the pandemic through 4 centres located across Nuneaton, and this was controlled through prior assessment of need by 178 professional care and support agencies who issued evouchers or red food vouchers. During the year 1[st] January 2021 to 31[st] December 2021 Nuneaton Foodbank fed 4077 people, of which 1372 were children – overall this was a decrease of 18.08% on the previous year.

All food is donated to Nuneaton Foodbank, and comes from a variety of sources, such as collections at supermarkets, from local business and charitable organisations, from schools and colleges, from churches, from individuals, and the general public. Donations have remained high during the pandemic, thanks to ongoing donations from the local community.

Nuneaton Foodbank is extremely well supported by volunteers, and there is now one paid employee. During 2021, some of the volunteers who had ‘stood down’ during the initial lockdown following advice from the Trussell Trust, returned to help at the centres. There are now just over 50 volunteers.

The foodbank provides some opportunities for work experience for those over 18, but this is limited by the restrictions imposed due to the COVID crisis

In all these activities the Trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Nuneaton Foodbank is one of the largest Trussell Trust foodbanks in the Coventry and Warwickshire area.

With the continuing demand Nuneaton Foodbank has had to meet the food needs of around 340 people a month, a decrease of 18.08% on the previous year.

The foodbank partners many businesses, charities and local support organisations and has a good relationship with Warwickshire County Council and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.

During the last year the number of referral agencies assessing need and issuing either evouchers or red food vouchers has increased from 160 to 178.

The number of donors has increased over the year from 480 to 538.

The foodbank has a good relationship with schools throughout Nuneaton, and many of these collect food on a regular basis, as well as at Harvest time and at Christmas.
