The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015). 2020 has been a tough year, with not much let up in sight. However, I am proud of every member of Wiltshire Treehouse. They have and continue to work exceptionally hard within unprecedented times. Our flexibility and team approach has been our strength, not just surviving as a charity but excelling. We believe in putting our beneficiaries at the heart of all that we do, and this year has been no different. Whilst we have been unable to meet our children, young people, and their families in person, we have devised new methods of communication, moving elements of our service online. The team have also made a commitment to support those on the front line, delivering an online induction to child bereavement; funded by Wiltshire Community Foundation. This course has helped us reach over 3,000 children and young people this year, improving the experience of bereaved children and young people now and for years to come. In difficult circumstances the charity has forged new relationships, partnering with Swindon Phoenix Rotary Club, and receiving a fantastic donation of £6,200 from the Ogbourne Downs Golf Course. We enable those in our local communities to improve the coping strategies, skills and confidence needed to better manage daily life. ## History… In 2001 Swindon hospital were providing support for siblings of children being cared for at the Children’s unit. By 2003 there was an increased demand and the Rainbow Club was launched. With further increase in need our founders, guided by Child Bereavement UK (CBUK), started exploring ways of providing group support. Wiltshire Treehouse was born in 2014, assisting bereaved children, young people, and families within Swindon. ## The Need for Wiltshire Treehouse… In the UK alone, a parent of a child dies every 22 minutes; that’s around 23,600 deaths a year and equates to around **111 children bereaved of a parent every day** . - ➢ **5% of children** will have **experienced the death of a parent or sibling** before age 16. - ➢ **92% of children will lose someone important** to them. - ➢ At any one time, **around 70% of schools have a bereaved pupil** in their care.[(CBUK, 2016)] In line with these statistics, Wiltshire Treehouse continues to see a demand for services, with an average of 10 Swindon referrals received monthly. Most recently we have seen an increase in requests for support from Wiltshire families outside of Borough where access to bereavement support for children is limited. For the Children and Young People supported by Wiltshire Treehouse, all are subject to increased life challenges as a result of their bereavement. Research highlights that bereaved children can experience significantly worse mental health concerns compared to their peers, a high proportion experience poor health, reduced educational attainment and social outcomes if not provided with appropriate and timely support. A quote from a parent sums up the struggles bereavement can bring, but also the hope that support from Wiltshire Treehouse offers. “She experiences times of feeling sick and not wanting to partake in activities, she is unable to say why she feels sick or if she is upset to say why. For her to know this is normal and to gain tools on how to manage this going forward, will hopefully help with her anxiety”. NEST parent. ## Statement of Public Benefit… When planning the activities for the period the Trustees have considered The Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and other matters. The charity operates in and around Swindon but as funds become available the charity will extend this to the wider community. The Charity provides bereavement support for children and young people. (Children, Young people, parents & Carers)** Family Group: Our children and family **“To start with I didn’t know how to cope with things, I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I feel more confident showing my feelings. My head is more clear about it all, not perfect but certainly better.”** _Young person’s feedback._ programmes benefit those 6 – 11 years of age, focusing on developing emotional literacy, with the aim to provide coping strategies. We help children and their families to manage the challenges following bereavement. Developed by Child Bereavement UK, this quality assured service has successfully improved lives of children and their families for 25 years. NEST: Developed by our volunteers who have personal experience of bereavement at a young age, these groups support young people aged 12+ coping with the death of a loved one. Within weeks we had realigned our resources with the needs of grieving families, and we continued to evolve to meet the changing landscape of 2020. During the year we directly supported over 200 children in a Covid secure way, more than any year **“Covid-19 has had a significant impact on the children & young people we work with, the effects of which are likely to be long-lasting. We witnessed a rise in anxiety and young people self- harming.”** _Jeannie, WTH Bereavement Support Worker._ previously. We supported both those bereaved by Covid-19 and those bereaved by other causes to navigate their grief at a time when people were unable to say goodbye in person, attend funerals, and many other points of help were not available. ## Our Flexible Approach and Covid-Secure **“M is sleeping much better and is less anxious overall. She’s able to talk about her mum with fondness instead of tears as well, and she is coping much better overall. It has helped her process her mum's death incredibly well.”** _Day to Remember Parent._ Changes: To begin we simplified our referral system to allow families to access our service as easily as possible. By re-training our volunteers, we increased the number of team members available to support families remotely, including training around autism awareness to ensure our services remained as inclusive as possible. We continued to offer vital support to parents/guardians and professionals using phone calls, email, text messages, and social media. We also created a new range of information and resource packs, designed specifically for those supporting bereaved children and young people. We redesigned our group work programmes and 1 to 1 work so that we could deliver them virtually. By working virtually, we extended our reach, and were able to help more children from rural areas who would have been unable to attend our **“This is a very good introductory course. Afterthe death of his much loved Grandad Nicholas became angry, negative and often worried. Feeling like her little boy was lost, Mum contacted Wiltshire Treehouse for support. Joining the Family Program, Nicholas and Mum were supported to explore and learn about their emotions, fi'nding ways to share their memories about Grandad. "Wiltshlre Treehouse has not only helped Nlcholas deal wlth the loss of my father, It has helped me learn how to Ilsten to hlm more and understand how hls emotions affect him" said Mum. The groups are delivered by the charity within Swindon and Wiltshire, helping to raise awareness of the affects of grief. Using creativity, stories and games, families learn strategies that work for them, such as Nicholas's worry monster. After completing the family program Mum feels more able to support Nicholas effectively. "I've gained my little boy back and I can't thank Wiltshire Treehouse enough. Without them I think I'd still have a very lost and angry little boy" Nicholas says, "Wiltshire Treehouse has helped me learn how to deal with my emotions in a safe way. I>ve now started to feel like I did when Grandad Tony was still alive. I still miss him lots and it hurts but I now understand how I feel a lot more and I know that it is ok to be sad." Registered Charity: 1159719 www.wiltshiretreehouse.org.uk Wiltshire Treehouse | Registered Charity 1159719 ## The Journey ahead… In 2021 we aim to achieve the main goals set in our 5-year strategic plan, with some adaptations that will enable us to meet the short-term needs of our families following the pandemic. We will also make some changes informed by our learning from 2020. As planned, we will deliver 4 programmes for primary aged children and 3 programmes for secondary aged young people, plus 2 training courses for professionals . However, we will allow the venues of our programmes to be decided as per the need of our families, embracing a hybrid method of working that will include our traditional in-person programmes, new virtual programmes, and new 1-day intensive intervention programme as appropriate. **“In 2021 we plan to learn from the pandemic, blending our traditional in-person programmes with new virtual provision. This will increase the availability & choice of support for beneficiaries, whilst maintaining the high standards we work to.”** _Kath Brownlee, Bereavement Service Lead._ We will also begin scoping work for a hub in South Wiltshire with a view to developing the support that we can offer in this rural area. During 2020 we saw a rise in complex cases and children experiencing complicated grief, due to the challenges presented by the pandemic. There was also a rise in children displaying self-harm and anxiety, with a greater number of children bereaved by suicide. In response to this, in 2021 we will provide trauma training for our volunteers and will work to develop specific training around supporting Children Bereaved by Suicide , which will be made available to our volunteers and local professionals. Expenditure increased to £58,557 (2019: £57,520). As expected, our most significant expenses were staff (£52,266) service delivery (£819) resources and equipment (£1,330), training and supervision (£1,047) and general expenses including insurance (£3,095). A total of £18,379 of funds were de-restricted during the year. The unrestricted surplus of £20,860 has increased the General Fund to £73,294 (2019: £52,434) providing more financial stability for the charity. ## Reserve’s policy: Wiltshire Treehouse holds reserves to ensure a continuing service to clients. Our aim is to retain a minimum reserve of four month's operational costs (£23,500); allowing the Charity to close should it be necessary, without adversely affecting the service to families in receipt of support and meet liabilities to creditors, staff notice and redundancy costs. Our reserves policy is reviewed annually to take account of any change in circumstances. Within 2021 we will continue work to increase our reserve position, from 4 to 5 months, aiding our organisation to become increasingly robust within a challenging climate for charities. ## Fundraising Report: Donors to Wiltshire Treehouse can be assured that we comply with the regulatory standards for fundraising. Whilst not registered with the Fundraising Regulator; due to our small size and income, we are committed to the Fundraising Promise and adhere to the Code of Fundraising Practice. This report covers the requirements charities must follow as set out in the Charities Act 2016. During 2020 our charitable bereavement services received £99,569; made up of 86% from Grants and Foundations, 8% donated by corporate partners, 5% from fundraising efforts, including seeking donations and gifts, running events and household waste recycling schemes. We received less than 1% (£212) from the Swindon Community Lottery. **“Fundraising within a pandemic has bought many challenges, including a drop in corporate support & individual giving. However, I couldn’t be prouder of our team, who have continued to provide exceptional support at a time of trauma. It has been a joy to share the work that has continued, despite social distancing. Our thanks go out to all those who have donated to our cause, our success is only possible with their generosity”.** _Sarah Gillam, Director of Development._ Where businesses or individuals fundraise on our behalf, we work to ensure that the correct safeguards are in place. To do this we require confirmation of compliance with the Code of Fundraising Practice. To further aid this process, we have also developed a fundraising brochure to help all groups and individuals wishing to fundraise on our behalf. As per best practice, our complaints policy is available upon request or can be located on our website. Wiltshire Treehouse operates a “complaints friendly” environment and greatly regrets if we do not meet the expectations or needs of service users. We welcome feedback and any negative comments will be taken very seriously. Wiltshire Treehouse | Registered Charity 1159719 **9** | P a g e ## Structure, Governance and Management… ## Governing document: The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes a Charity Incorporated Organisation, registered in December 2014. ## Commencement of Activities: As a newly established charity in 2014, Wiltshire Treehouse launched services to the public in October 2015 and had an immediate response and number of referrals. With experience from founding Trustees, dating back to 2001, Wiltshire Treehouse are the lead provider in Children and Young People’s bereavement support within Swindon. We anticipate that 2021 will continue to be a challenging year within fundraising due to the implications of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, we are hopeful that the many cancelled events of 2020 will continue to run in 2021, if not by 2022, including our local giving campaigns, Easter trail and Family Fun Day. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** ## **Basis of preparing the financial statements** The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. ## **Income** All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. ## **Expenditure** Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. ## **Tangible fixed assets** Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life. Computer equipment - 25% on cost ## **Taxation** The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. ## **Fund accounting** Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements. ## **2.
