Dear fellow Frlends.
On behalf of the committee of the British Association of Friends of Museums I welcome you to our 52 AGM and conference.
Bristol is both a city of great history and dynamic modernism with a wonderful diversity of museurns. We hope you wlll enjoy your
vlslt to the city and the hospitslity of our hosts, the Friends of Bristol Museums, Gallerie5 and Archives.
Financially, we have Improved over last year. After a Significant decline in funds the previous year, we have flnlshed the present
year with a modest decline of £163.90. Still, a loss is a loss and we will continue both to keep a close monitoring on our Income and
expense5. Two of the things which have helped us to better our financial position have been an Increase in interest Income from
£147.38 in the previous year to £1.138.45 thls year and the continuin8 income from 8AFM trips. These income streams have helped
us to maintain our membership fees at the same levels for many years. Last year we also recewed a 8enerous legary of £l.000 from
our late member, Joy Heffernan. These funds are now In our investment account and will contribute to BAFM for many years to
come. Do please consider leavlng a legacy to BAFM.
During the year we were pleased to welcome two new Regional Coordinators. Rlchard Irvine for Scotland and Janet R055-Mills for
the North-west Region. They have already contrfbuted to our work and we l¢)ok forward to thelr being part of BAFM for many years
to come. I hope those of you in their Re8lons have had a chance to meet them. We also now have two Youth Ambassadors,
Christopher Tinmouth and Heather Stracey, who are here to support your own Young Friend5 groups or establlsh new ones.
We are very ple¥sed to contlnue our partnershlp wtth the Marsh Charftable Trust. who sponsor our Friends of the Year aword. We
take it as a vote of confidence that such a prestigious charity ha5 chosen to support and recognise the work of Friends of Mu 5eums.
In addition we are contSnuln8 our Newsletters of the Year awards and Young Professional of the Year. We are also looking at a
Volunteer of the Year award. Combined, these award5 recognise the impact of your work and that of your members. Without
Friend5 $0 many of our museums would cease to function.
BAFM trips durlng the past year included outin8S to East An8lia and Vicenza and the Veneto. As noted. these help to fund BAFM and
they are a great way to enjoy the company of fellow Friend5 from all over the UK. They are also a way for Friends groups. whether
within the UK or abroad. to share their experien￿5 and museums with fellow Friends.
We contlnue to actively engage wlth international Friends groups, Including partlclpating in the World Federation of Friends of
Museums conference in Naples this past May. If you are interested in participating in intemational events please contact me. You
would be most welcome. October 12 is European Friends of Museums Day: do celebrate yourselves and your work.
It is a great pleasure to announ￿ that Lord Reay has accepted the presidency of BAFM. Aeneas Mackay is a working peer wlth
deep Interest in the cultural life of Brttain. We look forward to working with him in the coming years. lastly, we thank our long-
term patron. the Duke of Gloucester, who continues to keep a 8entle eye on all that we do.
Sincerely,
Daniel Callev
