It was a better year for our activttBs in the Gardens as the constraints of the Covid19
regulations requirements were eased.
The 2022 Eastsr event for children took place with som8 aclivibes and
attracted a very good crowd.

Autumn event was sadly cancelled du8 to Inclem￿ weather.
Gary the gardener continued his time allocated to the gardens for 2 days a week
kindly funded by Shaldon Parish Council. are very grateful for their support and
the further Vote this year to continue this fundir¥J.
Volunteer gardening days continued through the year with a number of new
volunteers joining. Bird boxes were put up and planting was made to help increasa
insect life. The volunteers dKI their best to help the gardens cope with the hot dry
8ummer conditions with mulching and watering being a priority .
The castle openings for tea and coffee and a bit of history r8n thn)ugh the summar.
A number of further voluntsers came forward and we were able to open on most
Monday, Tuesday and Friday moming8 through¢Jrt the summor. The Cast￿ also
hosted a very Successful Macmillan fundraising coffee rnoming in Septembar along
with a walk and talk afternoon for the ￿MberS of the Devon Garden Trust.
In May, the planned ceramic seat structure was buift to celebrate the Centenary of
the creation of the gardens. Two local artists, Michelle Greenwood Brown and Alison
Miles set to work on instslling the much admired r￿aMiC work and an O￿nIng event
for our charity members was hekl in Septembar.
The volunteers work in the gardens were again entered in the Britain in Bloom SW
'It's your neighbourhood. comp6tition, and we were pleased to achieve the level of
Outstanding rating.
The ceramic seat 8180 won an award from tha sarm organi8ation- the Denise James
Art Trophy .
In July Ihe gardens hosted a Musical BaThJ Event managed by Shaldon Parish
Council and half the proceed8 were awarded to the FrierKIs.
In December, our new book about Mrs. Hmward and her garden8 and hou8es was
launched at Teignmouth Herrtage Centre and made availab￿ for sale in several local
oulets .
V¥ts introduced our Safeguarding Poliw in December 2022.

Gardener
After Garfs initial Lottery fijndad appobnlment ended, Shaklon Parish Council
fund8d his continued employment in the Gardens on a part tirne basis. The Truste88
recognise the enOnT￿us impact that a resKlent gard8n8r has had on the Gardens
and as a priorty will work with Shaldon Parish Council and other Potsntial funders to
ensure the continued emptyment of a gardener.
Restorations
Castle maintenance
The castle has developed a serious problem with leaks and damp which it is evident
stems from the design and implementation of the recent rerK)vation. The trustees
and committee continue to monitor ts acti<￿ of Te￿nbridge District Council and
local councillors to resolve the situation and ensure that the castle continues to make

a significant contribution to the success of the Gardens. In autumn a dehumidffier
was brought in to help limit the water damage .
Wrtches Cave
The witch's cave has been condemn&J by council eNJineers as being unsafe and
has been fenced off. Trustees obtained a report a conservation engineer to
indicate a summary of the defects and a way fofftrd . A costing and further advice is
awaited from a local builder.
Castle wall
The engineers report In￿￿ed a summary of possible solutions to the stone faced
embankrnent. Rastorth'on will na8d to wait funding when this can be made available.
Gard8ner8 Hut
We ar8 encouraging Teignbndge District Council to repair the gardeners hut which is
part of their programme, though th￿ 18 likely to be delayed by funding limitations.
It seem8 there is clearty no public for such projects for the foreseeable future
so that it will be n8cessary to try and follow a programme of fundraising for the
reinstatement of thes8 important features over a period of ts'ma, induding poteMially
a 88cond phase application to Heritage Lottery.
Volunt••rn
The wort( of the Friends depends upon volunteers and the trust88s are vary grateful
ft)r the time and effort given by lh8 management committee and by all those
volunteers who tum up regularty lo work in the garden8.
