Objectives and activities
The Aeropark Heritage Aircraft Collection was registered as a charity on 11 December 2014, registered no. 1159587. Since this time its objective has been to advance knowledge and education of the public in the history of aviation by the establishment of a permanent museum for the preservation of aircraft, aircraft parts and associated ground equipment of historical interest.
Organisation
The Trustees oversee the Aeropark Volunteers Association (AVA). This is the entity that manages the day-to- day activities of AHAC. A part of the AVA is a Management Committee, which organises the general membership of the AVA, exhibits, finances, events and grounds. The Management Committee is drawn from the general membership. All AHAC Trustees were elected to the AVA Management Committee upon the formation of the AVA in February 2015. The AVA is governed by a constitution that has been agreed by the membership.
Review of activities
The last couple of years at the Aeropark have been some of the hardest for all the volunteers, with the Covid 19 pandemic forcing us to close to the public throughout 2020. We were finally able to reopen to our visitors following government guidelines at Easter 2021. The number of visitors we received throughout 2021 has been fantastic for the charity despite the restrictions in place. We hope that 2022 will be a better year for all. Some of the changes that have happened during 2021 included reorganising our visitor display hangar to make it a more pleasant experience, some much needed work on some of the exhibits that have lacked in previous years has taken place and is ongoing. Each year we try to hold ‘open cockpit event days’ which are very popular with our visitors, but these unfortunately have had to be postponed due to a lack of parking space, our committee are working hard to try and come up with a solution so we can start these again
In the future, we intend to look at the possibility of erecting a new aircraft hangar to house some of our more vulnerable airframes and exhibits, this will be a large project and may have to be looked at over the next few years as we need to find the funds to accomplish this. We have spoken about installing a covered enclosure near the viewing mound, so our public have somewhere to shelter from bad weather. We hopefully intend to have this agreed sometime this year.
To facilitate some of these longer-term plans, we are in the early stages of negotiating a lease with the landowner, Manchester Airport Group.
