ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY TRUST Charity Number 1159543 The trustees undertook a review of the services that could be provided and looked to establish a more long-term solution for the provision of this valuable seniice to the local community of those affected by brain injurv. Engaging with students to establish what they saw as their essential and preferred courses, was made difficult by the lack of access to the college database. Reluctantly the Trustees came to the conclusion they could no longer sUPPOrt the college involvement in providing these services, due to the lack of reliable availability of staffing and limited facilities. Subsequently, we have been working with an alternative supplier of suitable courses. We hope to expand these to include other courses previously operated through the centre at Evesham. Whilst these are operated through a third party and currently from a village hall, the trustees feel this is the best way of continuing provision until alternative premises can be found.. FUTURE PLANS We remaln committed to providing these valuable services; however, we must ensure quality and consistenoi of service can also be delivered. The alternative venue we are now supporting provides the opportunity for the Trust to re-establish provision for those suffering with acquired brain injury, which is our primary objective. The Trustees have now resolved to find alternative premises to replace, as far as possible, the facilities previously provided in Eve5ham. A search for property is underway and the trustees accept a tenancy may be more affordable than attempting an outright purchase. The new seniice provider is committed to supportin8 this development and together we are confident that the provision of a more extensive range of courses can be provided. FUNDRAISING Having identlfied a viable means to deliver the provision of services, it is intended that fundraising will be focused on raising the funds needed to ensure the long-term provision of services. Our target now is to raise sufficient funding to provide on-going services within a suitable location in Evesharn. Our fund-raising activity has increased as a result. The addtionalk funds raised towards the new premises will be reflated in the following years results. Fundraising had been stalled in the last year pending reaching a decision on service provider. This caused a deficit in the year. Page 3
ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY TRUST Charity Number 1159543 Trustees, Annual Report The Trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025. The accounts have been prepared in accordance with accounting policies set out in Note I to the accounts, the Statement of Recommended Practice, "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" (SORP 2015) and the Charities Att 2011. OBJECTS The objects of the Acquired Brain Injury Trust are to support the re-education, rehabilitation and improvement of quality of life of people in Worcestershire and adjoining counties who have suffered an acquired brain injury due to accident, stroke or otherwise, and as a result have experienced loss of communication, cognitive and/or motor skills as well as personal confidence. FAcfs ABOUT BRAIN INJURY At any one time about 1,000,000 people in the UK are livin8 With the results of a head injury, usually caused by an accident, stroke or tumour. The effects may be devastating, affetting not only the injured person, but also family, friends and work colleagues. The problem5 that arise do not always depend on the severity of the injury. People with an apparently minor injury may experience difficulties with memory, concentration, communication, problem solving, mood and personality changes, as well as fatigue and intolerance to their environment. People with more severe injuries may In addition experience complex physical and sensory difficulties. Stroke can have similar effects about 100,000 people each year wlll experience their flrst stroke, of whom 10,000 are under the age of 55. BACKGROUND OF THE ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY TRUST The Acquired Brain Injury Trust operated from the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Centre, which wa5 built with a lottery grant in 1998 on land leased from Evesham College. Students living with the effects of a brain injury are enrolled with the College and taught by College staff, but appreciated the ABI Centre as a calm and homely base, where they have their own co-ordinator appointed by the College. RECENT EVENTS The trust was saddened to lose its lease on the building which was terminated by the Warwickshire College group as part of their plan to restructure their provision of seniices and centre this largely on their site at Pershore. Unfortunately, they have been unable to provide similar provision at Pershore and in consequence the trust has had to seek alternative arrangements to maintain this important provision. For a period Trustees were able to make arrangements with Wallace House, a local community facility, to continue providing some limited classes, for students, in Evesham. Unfortunately, courses were often suspended through the lack of staffing provision from the college. Students reported poor communication from the college and numbers supporting these courses dwindled. Attempts were made by the trustees to encourage attendance by advertising to no avail. Page 2
