The accounts have been prepared in accordance with accounting policies set out in Note I to the accounts, the Statement of Recommended Practice, "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" (SORP 2015) and the Charltles Att 2011. OBJEcrs The objects of the Acquired Brain Injury Trust are to support the re-education, rehabilitation and improvement of quality of life of people in Worcestershire and adjoining counties who have suffered an acquired brain injury due to accident, stroke or otherwise, and as a result have experienced10sS of communication, cognitive andlor motor skills as well as personal confidence. FAcfs ABOUT BRAIN INJURY At any one time about 1,000,000 people in the UK are living with the results of a head injury, usually caused by an accident, stroke or tumour. The effects may be devastatin& affecting not only the injured person, but also family, friends and work colleagues. The problems that arise do not always depend on the severity of the Injury. People with an apparently minor injury may experience difficulties With memory, concentration, communication, problem solving, mood and personality changes, as well as fatigue and intolerance to their environment. People with more severe injuries may In addition experience complex physical and sensory difficulties. Stroke can have similar effects about 100,000 people each year will experience their first stroke, of whom 10,000 are under the age of 55. BACKGROUND OF THE ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURYTRUST The Acquired Brain Injury Trust operated from the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Centre, which was built with a lottery grant in 1998 on land leased from Evesham College. Students living with the effects of a brain injury are enrolled with the College and taught by College staff, but appreciated the ABI Centre as a calm and homely base. where they have their own co-ordinator appointed by the College. At the beginning of the academic year In September 2019, there were 52 students enrolled on a wide range of classes over four days each week, with students also benefrtting from a woodwork class in the main College on Mondays. As in previous years, the principal activity of the Trust had been the provision of bursaries for those students who would have difficulty rneeting the cost of College courses. Although the need for bursaries was reduced due to changes in the College's fee structure. RECENT EVENTS The trust was saddened to lose its lease on the building which was terminated by the WanNickshire College group as part of thelr plan to restructure their provision of services and centre this largely on their site at Pershore. Unfortunately, they have been unable to provide similar provision at Pershore and in consequence the trust has had to seek alternative arrangements to maintain this important provision. Page 2
ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY TRUST Charity Number 1159543 For a period Trustees were able to make arrangements with Wallace House, a local communlty facility, to continue providing some limited classes, for students, in Evesham. Unfortunately, courses were often suspended through the lack of staffing provision from the college. Students reported poor communication from the college and numbers supporting these courses dwindled. Attempts were made by the trustees to encourage attendance by advertising to no avail. The trustees undertook a review of the Services that could be provided and looked to establish a more long-term solution for the provision of this valuable service to the local community of those affected by brain injury. Engaging with students to establish what they saw as their essential and preferred courses, was made difficult by the lack of access to the college database. Relurtantly the Trustees came to the conclusion they could no longer support the college involvement in providing these services, due to the lack of reliable availability of staffing and limited facilities. Subsequently, we have been working with an alternative supplier of suitable courses in Art and hope to expand these to include other courses previously operated through the centre at Evesham. Whilst these are operated through a third party and from a village hall, the trustees feel this is the best way of continuing provision. FUTURE PLANS We remain committed to providing these valuable seniices; however, we must ensure quality and consistency of seniice can also be delivered. The alternative venue we are now supporting provides the opportunity for the Trust to re-e5tablish provision for those suffering with acquired brain injury, which is our primary objective. In addition, we are hoping to add other courses, beyond Art and Brain Gym to include Photography and other skills. If this provider can be supported adequately and interest continue5 to grow from students the charity will look at expand provision and will look forfurther opportunities to enhance the provision. FUNDRAISING Having identified a viable means to deliver the provision of servlces, It Is Intended that fundraising will be focused on raising the funds needed to ensure the long-term provision of services. Our initial target Is to raise sufficient funding to match current expenditure and preserve reserrfes. Fundraising had been stalled in the last year pending reaching a decision on service provider. This caused a deficit in the year. Pa9e 3
