Established in December 2013 the Droylsden & District Foodbank continues to be in great demand in our community. 2021 was another challenging year as the constraints of the pandemic continued to have an impact on our services. All processes continued in the warehouse with both stock deliveries and distribution now housed under one roof. Because of the shielding of many of our volunteers and following the completion of risk assessments, the number of volunteers working within the warehouse remained limited. Two teams of six were set up working alternate weeks to include as many volunteers as possible and to ensure continuity of service should a team member test positive. The start of the year saw the Foodbank maintain the delivery only model. Deliveries were made by Foodbank volunteers. As restrictions were lifted across the country the decision was made to move to collection only by clients or their representative. Initially this saw a reduction in the number of referrals and also a significant number of clients not coming to collect their food following referral. The number of referrals had levelled out by the end of the year and the vast majority of clients now collected their parcels. Our website and Trussell Trust system were updated with the revised processes. The ‘e-referral’ process has continued during the year and works well. Agencies across Greater Manchester can now refer clients to their nearest Foodbank not necessarily the Foodbank the agency signed up with. Trussell Trust continued to support the two tablets donated by them for use in the warehouse, where there is no wi-fi and there is no cost to the Foodbank for data usage. Whatever restrictions were in force in our area during the year the work of the Foodbank has not been interrupted and we have been able to provide for those in crisis in our community. Our work has been generously supported by our community with food and cash donations. Where stocks have been short for specific items we have purchased using vouchers donated by supporters. In addition to providing core food items, through the generosity of donations, we have been able to provide families with additional items including, toilet rolls, toothbrushes and paste, Easter Eggs and Christmas chocolates. Tesco donate on a weekly basis any surplus fruit, vegetables and bread which clients can chose from to add to their parcels. Because of the generous cash grants received in 2020 the Trustees have considered the future needs of the Foodbank . The future of the warehouse is unsure as the shopping precinct where the unit is situated has new owners. If there is any need to find new premises the funds may be needed. The future development of services within the Foodbank will also be considered in 2022 in consultation with the Trussell Trust and the community. The Trussell Trust introduced an initiative called ‘Together for Change’. Their vision is for a UK without the need for food banks. The strategy will look at ‘Changing minds’, Changing communities’ and ‘Changing policy’. Droylsden & District Foodbank will explore what this might mean for us and our community over the coming year. The foodbank maintains appropriate accounts. Following the AGM the 2021 accounts and Trustee report will be submitted to the Charity Commission. The Foodbank continues to adhere to the processes and procedures laid out in The Trussell Trust Foodbank Operating Manual. The Droylsden & District Foodbank continues to be supported by the community and remains an integral part of emergency food provision throughout the area. It is a credit to our community, the region and indeed the network as a whole. 2021 has been both a challenging and rewarding year for all connected to the Foodbank. Wider publicity has thrown a spotlight on food poverty and discussions in many areas will continue into 2022 as strategies are developed at government, Trussell Trust and local level. The Trustees and volunteers recognise the challenges that 2022 will bring and acknowledge that further development of strategies and processes may be required.
