/ Registered Charity 1159407 (Charity Commission.) ## **6[th] Annual Report AGM** ## **1[st] June 2020 – 31[st] May 2021** I am very pleased to report that we are still supporting 16 children with special needs and their families. As well as 21 children that attend The New Highlight School, 3 children that attend and board at The Stelurm Elite School and Anita Ndyta who attends The Olive Oloirien Primary School. The Thunder Foundation has experienced a very unusual year, due to Covid. In Kenya the schools have been closed more than they have been open. Also, when the schools did reopen Raad was unsure whether the schools were abiding by the Covid rules e.g., social distancing, hand washing and face masks. Therefore, Raad was very reluctant to allow the children to return to school. We decided to introduce private tutoring which was conducted in very small groups for our New Highlight/boarding School children. This was held with small groups of children social distancing outside and run by various teachers that we employed. This helped to continue their education in a safe and productive way. We decided that the best way to support our families over Covid was to continue with the weekly food donations. We discovered that these weekly donations of food were crucial for our families. It meant it helped families to stay home and safe instead of going out looking for work. While the schools were closed families collected food weekly from a store that is close to where most of our families live. Thunder pays weekly to the store and the store has a list of names of the families that we support. Each family can choose what food they require up to the amount of money Thunder pays per family. This has been working very well for all the families we support. We also introduced weekly phone contact with our families, to check that they are well. All our families have Raad and Ramadham’s (Thunder’s paid part time Social Worker) phone contact, the children’s guardians know that they can contact them if needed. Raad and the Trustees have seen the importance the food contributions are making to our families but realised that we couldn’t continue with weekly food donations once the children returned to school. We needed to pay for school fees, school uniforms, transport and school food. It was decided that we could afford to pay for the families to receive two food donations monthly and this would hopefully be paid for by fund raising. In December sadly Blessing Wangare (one of our Special Needs Children) met with a very bad accident, she had some very hot tea spilt over her and needed to be admitted into hospital for treatment. Blessing’s mother didn’t have funds to pay the hospital fees and eventually asked The Thunder Foundation for monetary help. Thunder paid the hospital fees for Blessing. Just after Christmas Blessing’s mother moved nearer her family for help and support with Blessing. Blessing is now living too far to continue to attend the Special Needs School that our other 15 Special Needs children still attend. Raad has asked Blessing’s mother to locate a suitable school nearer to where they are now living but the mother still hasn’t found a school suitable for Blessing. In December we were still able to safely offer our families with special needs a Christmas trip to a local park, where all the families had plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the fresh air and lovely green surroundings. These families were giving a wonderful day to remember with lots of games, a delicious picnic and many treats. All the children that Thunder support received a Christmas stocking filled with lots of sweets and toys. All our families received Christmas food vouchers. Due to Covid this past year has been very difficult to fund raise. Hopefully in our next financial year fundraising will improve. Before Christmas we did have a Christmas Stocking Appeal that was mainly on Facebook. We raised enough money to pay for the children’s Christmas Stockings, plus two of our supporters donated the money for the families Christmas food vouchers. Also, Thunder received a donation from a lovely 100-year-old lady in Australia to pay for more food vouchers for the families of our special needs children to celebrate New Year. As always Raad and the Trustees keep in regular contact via WhatsApp. ## **1[st] June 2020 – 31[st] May 2021** - June and onwards- As schools are closed due to Covid, Raad and Trustees decided the best way to support our families was to donate weekly food. Many of our parents due to Covid are unable to work or have less work due to Government restrictions, therefore knowing that they are receiving weekly food donations relieves a lot of worry for the whole family. - August- Thunder introduced a tutoring programme as well as the food donations. - 27[th] August Trustees Meeting. - October- All families received a double food ration plus some vitamin drinks and reusable water bottle thanks to two children, Karina and Rohaan, who live in Nairobi and donated their birthday money. - 29[th] October- Trustee Meeting. - 23[rd] November - Paul Fagan completed his 10K run along Hastings seafront to raise awareness and collect donations for The Thunder Foundation. - 6[th] December- Trustees agreed via WhatsApp to pay for Blessing Wangare’s medical bill to allow her to leave hospital after having treatment for burns. A quick Trustee decision was needed as every extra day Blessing stayed in hospital would cost an extra 1,500KSH. (about £10 per day) - 7[th] December- Blessing’s hospital bill was paid and she was allowed to go home. - 7[th] December- Christmas Stocking appeal started on Facebook and Website. - 11[th] December- Raad started pricing various items for the children’s christmas stockings and discussing with Trustees suitable toys to buy our various children via WhatsApp. - 16[th] December- Bank transfer to London Marathon. - 20[th] December- Christmas picnic for our children with special needs and their families. They all enjoyed the day, a cooked meal, presents and games. Some of the mums and dads even played football! - Christmas- All the children we support received a christmas stocking and each family received a 1,000 Kenyan shilling voucher to buy extra food for the family. - New year- All our families with special needs children that we support received an extra 1,000 Kenyan shilling voucher that had been donated from one of Thunder’s supporters, (100 year old lady from Australia.) - 11[th] January- New Highlight children returned to school. Raad concerned as Covid protocol was not being adhered to correctly. However, once he investigated the parents informed Raad they were happy with the precautions that the school had put in place. Also, Rufus’s Aunty had reported that she too was satisfied with the Covid protocol that the boarding school was using. - 18[th] January- Raad reported via WhatsApp that the children had had a good week at school and parents were very happy. Raad still trying to organise transport for our Children with Special Needs for returning to school. - 21[st] January- Adrienne sat in on Virgin Money London Marathon webinar. The marathon will be held on Sunday 3[rd] October 2021 and we have one place which Denise has kindly volunteered to run. Also, at the same time they are holding a virtual marathon and we can apply for places. - 26[th] January- children with Special Needs returned to school. - 29[th] January- Liam Clarke (new sponsor) contacted Team Thunder to inform us that he has chosen our charity to raise awareness and funds when he climbs Mount Kilimanjaro in 2022. - 30[th] January- Trustee Meeting. - 5[th] February- secured 5 places in the London Virtual Marathon. - 9[th] February- cheque paid out for website upkeep. - 9[th] February- Thunder newsletter up on Facebook and e mailed to supporters also link on Thunder website. - 15[th] February- Cheque paid out to GMP Accountants for Thunder’s yearly accounts. - 9[th] March- discussion via WhatsApp between Raad and Trustees about better supporting Brian Mbugua as his mum is not meeting his medical needs. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to - examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act, - to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and - to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. ## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statements below. ## **Independent examiner's statement** In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements - to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and - to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or 2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
