THE NORTHERN BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL TRUST

Report of the Trustees for the Year ending 6th June 2025

Over the past year we have completed the installation of Phase One of the Northern Battle of Britain Memorial at the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum in Doncaster. The installation is a brick wall representing a WW2 revetment. The wall is flanked by an RAF ensign between two sculptures of a Spitfire and a Hurricane in flight. At the centre of the wall is an RAF Fighter Command Crest. Above the crest is the text Roll of Honour 1940 . Below the crest area is the text Remembering the Few Reminding the Many . To the left and right of the crest are the names of the fallen during the Battle of Britain as listed by the Battle of Britain Historical Society.

In May a well attended Dedication Service took place in association with the Royal Air Force and the South and West Yorkshire Wing of the Royal Airforce Cadets. The Service was led by the local RAF Cadet Chaplain Reverend Tom Brown and was presided over by Air Vice Marshal Alan T Johnson ( Ret’d) the Patron of both the Memorial and the South Yorkshire Museum. Since that time the site has been visited by many groups from schools, colleges, Air Scouts and Air Cadet squadrons. In addition the Memorial has received many supportive comments from members of the general public who have visited the Museum. Progress has been made on the creation of information and educational materials. These will be used to explain the background to the Memorial and its significance to the role the North of England played during the Battle of Britain. Plans are now in place for a Battle of Britain room to be created in a building directly opposite the Memorial. This room dates back to 1940 and includes a window that looks directly onto the Memorial Wall itself. The year concluded with a Battle of Britain Service and a Remembrance Day Service both held on the Memorial site.

This year the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum welcomed over 23,000 visitors all of which will have seen the Memorial. In the years to come we hope to expand our activities through partnerships with Battle of Britain focused Museums and organisations dedicated to this important time in our history. In doing so we hope to attract and engage as many visitors as possible to “Remember the Few by Reminding the Many’.
