ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
As Team Edward chairman I have the pleasure once again to wrlte my annual chairmanship report for the
charlty for 2023/24.
Having set the charlty up back In AprS12013 Just as an idea and a thought, it is extremely humbling that
Team Edward are where we are 10 years later.
We started wlth a slmple coast to coast cycle challenge to ralse initial funds. We had one blke, 3 spare t
shlrts prlnted with Team Edward on the back and a chocolate labrador called Edward" In a back-up
vehicle barking at me out of the rear wlndowl It was a dream and vlslon to help wherever I could to give
great lives to thls wonderful breed of dog.Rallying the support of Ilke-mlnded people, Team Edward
contlnues to shine and brlng so much joy and happiness to so many Labradors that come Into our care
not forgettlng thelr new owners too.
My memorles of the orlglnal challenge were rellved thls year by Carole Parsons, a quallfled veterlnarlan
who branched out to start her own Acupuncture buslness. I met Carole, after l enllsted her help for my
own chocolate female lab Ellle, and we chatted weekly durlng her treatment sessions about the charlty
and Ideas of fundraising. Carole was enthused enough to want to help us and signed up for a coast to
coast challenge herself on her own, cycllng the distance over 5 days wlth her trusted cuddly yellow
labrador soft toy "Jonathon" strapped to her handle bars. Carole raised a very wonderful amount for us
on her completlon to help glve the best to our rescues.she shared her daily blog of her hlghs and lows on
our social media pages.
10 years on, Team Edward Labrador Rescue Is still that 5peclal charlty l envisaged it to be back then.
With many Indlvldual supporters now donating to help fund all of the wonderful work we do monthlyi
these donations help us to have "regular. Income.Returnlng group5 and clubs, many on social media,
contlnue to fundralse for us. We thank thern dearly always for thelr klndness and contlnued support.
We continued our presence out and about attendlng local shows such as Vets 4 Pets, Hoverlng Vlntage
Car Rally and Dog Show, Belvolr Castle, Ashover Show Tollerton Dog Show. We were Invited to host our
flrst very own Dog Show In conjunctlon with The Dog House Pubs In Nottlngham. The Dog Show was an
incredlble success. It had wonderful attendance on a beautlful sunny and clear dayl Thls show has glven
us the confidence and experlence to host our own one again In the future.
We are supported agaln thls year by Nlna at her local buslness. Tlggyz groomers. She offers all of our
scues a pamper sesslon when they arrlve in our care. It's our way of belng there at the treatment to
assess the dog In a dlfferent envlronment to see how they reart and cope.
Nlna, hearlng about the lengths we 90 to for our rescues, organlsed A Washathon Day, where dogs would
be groomed and monles donated to Team Edward. We attend the Washathon Day and Its raffle. The event
raised a wonderful amount and gave us the opportunlty to talk to like-mlnded dog owners.
Hearlng our storles, and people seelng the passlon for our speclal rescue, ignltes the flame to rally people
to help us.10 years on and that passlon and dedicatlon remalns by myself and my two trustees Nlck and
Sue, who are constantly by myself slde wlth advice and decision maklng.
Thls year's accounts show a rlse In costs in the veterinary care for our rescues. Veterlnary care costs
generally has rlsen by all vet centres, but there have been a few cases where once agaln Edward's special
care has been needed thls year.we will always as a rescue never shy away from offering to help
Labradors which aren't able to be straightforwardly rehomed.
Wlth the economlc climate, there are many famllles struggllng with rlslng costs and are struggling to give
veterlnary care to their pets. In one Instance we were contacted by Tina, the owner of Carnfield Hall
whlch Is a canine hydrotherapy and physiotherapy ttntre that we sometlmes use durlng the rehabllltatlon
of our rescues.
She had been trying to treat a yellow labrador Marley viho was suddenly unable to walk. Sadly, hls owner
was unable to fund a vital CT and MRI scan that would help In dlagnosing his problem. After a twstee
discussion, we agreed to contact Medivet Referrals to get him an urgent appointment and put forward our
offer of funding any treatment needed for hlm.
Marley's owner was so committed to hls dally care It was humbling to help her as much a5 we could.
Page 2

Team Edward
Report of the Trustees
for the year ended 5 April 2024
Sadly, the scans dld not give us the news we were all hoping for, They showed numerous inoperable
cancerous tumours along his spine.Marley was still happy and Ilvlng a good life even though he wasn't
able to use his back legs. "Wheels" were purchased for Marley. The "wheels" lifted his splrlts Immensely.
To see him whlzzing around on them playing ball was such an Incredible slght; It showed how dogs really
do live in the moment.
Marley continued to do well for many more months after his diagnosis and we were always there to
support hls owner emotionally and financially wlth medications and whole fresh foods supplements and
special memory foam beddlng.Marley was truly an inspiration. It was a Sad day when we received the
call to say Marley had suddenly deterlorated just as the surgeon had sald he would. The klndest thlng
had to be done for him. Marley's owner organlsed a fundralser for us to thank us for everythlng we had
supported her and Marley with over the months.
Another sad case into rescue was a beautlful chocolate glrl now named Bronte by her new owners. She
had been brought into a vet centre In the north west by a gentleman saying he had found her roamlng.
After a few short days it was clear to the vet nurse there was a problem with her sight and after a few
Inltlal tests It was confirmed that she would probably go blind. The gentleman was unable to give the
tlme and the financial care she would need. Therefore, the vet nurse contacted us to see if we would
help.
We took Bronte Into our foster care and started our own veterinary vlslts for a second opinlon. The vets
confirmed that she had bilateral retlnal degeneration. Findlng a permanent home for Bronte was our
prlorlty and Bronte went wlth our promise to continually fund her regular eye examlnations, her eye
medlcatlons and speclallst referral appointments at Veterlnary Vision.
Sometlmes It Is Just a case of supportlng new owners, Not every owner Is able to fund expenslve
treatments even though they could glve a dog a very lovlng klnd home. Insurance may not always be
possible to secure for a pre-existlng condltlon.
Another rnemorable chocolate girl taken into our care In thls year was Bella. Yet another one that needed
an urgent veterlnary visit for numerous extremely ulcerated and enlarged pedunculated masses from her
Stomach area. Arranglng surgery for thelr removal was made a little more compllcated when pyometra
was suspected too In which she needed to be spayed as a matter of urgency
To be In a fortunate posltlon to fund these numerous operations Is what Team Edward Is all about, so
they are able to recover In our expert care and then go on to flourlsh In thelr new furever
homes.Rehabilitatlon expenses are always promlnent in our expendlture, glvlng our rescues the best
posslble recovery. Often the dogs come into our care wlth nothlng. Therefore, we take prlde In the
bundles we glve to our rescues. They Include a new collar, a controlllng lead, Ruffwear harness, a comfy
bed, new toy5 and enrichment mats.
Good food and supplements are always added. We contlnually strlve to upgrade our knowledge on dog
nutrltion. This year we have upgraded our food feed to our rescues to a less ultra proce55ed food, a cold
pressed, or ald drled meat. In an Ideal world, we would feed our rescues raw meat. However, we thlnk
re-educatlng people on the many benefits of raw meat Is a long way off as of yet. Regular conversations
and consultatlons wlth holistic vets are Informative and we work alongslde one of the best holistic vets,
Nlck Thompson. We strive to Improve our knowledge and we pass this on in the way of prlnted sheets to
our new owners offering our views and bellefs on carlng for thelr new rescue.
We share our storles on our soclal medla pages, to update our supporters and followers about the special
work we do on top of our normal rehomlng storles. It shows our dedlcatlon, our commitment and our
passion and people are able to stand by us, and support and praise our work.
In any one time our charity name is dominant In speclally remembered cases where we go above and
beyond to help a dog In need. Buck a young fox red boy, a falr few years back now, wlll be assoclated
wlth the above sentence and our name always,
To add to that chapter In our story book, another very special boy this year, Ted.
Our foster family named hlm Ted when they offered to care for him as initially hls name was unknown. In
late October 2023, 1 responded to many requests on our soclal media asking us whether we could step in
to help an 'elderly black labrador. that had been found by a couple of runners in nearby woodland.

for the year ended 5 April 2024
Injured, totally shut down and desperate, I acted qulckly to find whlch vet5 he had been taken to. We
offe￿d to fund anything he needed If there was no trace of an owner. Not belng microchipped there
wasn't golng to be an easy way to trace an owner. Knowlng by law the local dog warden had to be
informed so 'Ted' would do a 7 day perlod In a council afflllated kennel.
We spoke wlth the vets and the dog warden and offered to care for hlm In a home envlronment and 51gn
the nece55ary papers to state we would "foster. him for the requlred time In case an owner was looking
for him and came forward to collect him. This care was going to be beneflcial for him as he was In such a
state. Having been glven paln relief on a busy Saturday rnomlng in a veterinary surgery, l arranged to
meet the dog warden to brlng hlm Into our foster famlly and glve hlrn the care he needed.
I felt shock and sadness on Inltially rneetlng hlm In the vet receptlon; a dog totally that was shut down
and most deflnltely not a labrador. Irrelevant of the breed, a dog that was In desperate need of care, I
wasn't prepared to turn hlm away from our Team Edward family Just because he wasn't a labrador.
Struggllng to walk, Ilmplng and blood oozlng from hls mouth, I drove hlm stralght to out of hours
veterlnary care In Newark. He remalned there for 4 days havlng been operated on for a terrible mouth
trauma. He need teeth removed, stltchlng Inside his gums and hls lip area to be pleced back together.
Team Edward nursed Ted back to health daily for the next two months as storles unfolded about hls
traumatlc Ilfe belng abused, uncared for, starved and used for badger baltlng. Animal authorltles had
previously been involved wlth Ted due to the cruelty agalnst hlm. New storles about hls abuse came to
Ilght dally. Thanks to regular vet vislts, medicatlons, supplements, massage therapy and laser, we were
starting to see thls boy shine and open up to us. We wlll be known forever as Teds Lifellne.
He became a star In hls own rlght. He most deflnltely had his own fan base, lapping up all the attentlonl
He became a symbol of everythlng we stood for and donatlons to help us care for hlm flowed Into our
Just Giving page from people slckened and saddened to see how he had been let down prevlously by
humans. Not knowlng much about the breed, a possSble cross bull terrier, I researched the characterlstlcs
as much as posslble to enable me to find hlm a perfect furever home.Ted found his home with a family
known to us just In time for Chrlstmas 2023 and again he went wlth our promise of funding hls
medlcatlons needed for hls arthritlc paln.
We ended the year wlth our Chrlstmas Raffle that Ted promoted for us, and It proved to be the best total
ever ralsed. Our followers and supporters rallied wlth us for Ted and as ever proud they could help us.
Treatlng every dog that comes Into our care as an Indlvldual we continue to be a small, personal rescue. I
admit we don't rehome In the hundreds, but we glve our all to everyone who Is lucky enough to flnd us.
Our foster famllles remain commltted to helplng us care for our rescues In a home envlronment Instead of
havlng to Use any form of kennelling facllltles. Thls arrangement makes our Job of assessing easter In a
home envlronment knowlng what we are looking for In a new family reglstered wanting to adopt from us.
Our trustees remain commltted to our purpose wlth meetings whether In person on zoom calls or on
messenger and I feel are plentiful, In the day to day runnlng of the rescues and online fundraising shop.
As always, I contlnually thank thern for sharing my passlon ft)r Team Edward, to whlch I know they are so
proud.
Once agaln, our financlal posltlon remalns strong and conslstent enabling us to contlnue to be that speclal
rescue that Team Edward Is known to be. As chalrman and founder, our achievements bulld and radiate
from me dally. I feel charlty donations and monles are spent wlsely and only where needed.
I look forward to another year of belng able to help glve our all to Labradors and their owners in future
months. Another year to write many more chapters for our Team Edward book of stories that our
supporters love to read. A rescue that started as a glint In Edward's eye when he too found himself In a
rescue at a young age through no fault of his own. A rescue bullt of kindness and warmth and a real true
desire to help both Labrador and owner. That vlsion for us will never alter.
Team Edward LabradDr Rescue, the small charity with the big heart.
