The PCC of St Mary the Virgin Church, Wheatley, has the responsibility to promote, in the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the Church – pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has the responsibility for maintaining the fabric of the Church.
1. Wheatley Ministry, Local Ecumenical Partnership and Wheatley
Area Churches : The Rev. Nigel Hawkes is our minister licensed by the Bishop to take services at St Mary’s. Wheatley is part of a Benefice with Albury, Holton, Waterperry and Waterstock with Nigel as its vicar and he is assisted by Rev. David Bendor-Samuel, an Associate Priest, based at Holton who in the main looks after the four additional parishes. The Revd. Michael Dormandy is licensed to serve as our curate to assist with pastoral work in the parish.
Alexandra Hewitt is licensed to serve as LLM to preach and assist with pastoral work in this benefice.
Wheatley Area Churches : The WAC consists of St Mary’s Church, United Reformed Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, St Bartholomew’s Church and Wheatley Community Church. WAC has continued to work together in supporting each other and the wider village community in many different ways. Joint service held in Primary School for Week of Prayer for Christian unity, lent soup lunches were held to support Christian Aid in URC hall, Good Friday pilgrimage took place around the village again and Easter cards were delivered to village and Holton. Support continues for refugees and the Fusion Harvest Fun Day was successful. Expedition a journey of faith for teenagers was run in Church finishing with the group joining the 8.00am service on Sunday morning. Remembrance Sunday Service was in Church followed by laying of wreaths at the war memorial. The Advent windows had QR codes beside them to pass on a spiritual message. A weekly Newsletter is produced by the vicar. News is also posted on the Church Facebook page, A Church Near You Website and in the Wheatley Parish Council Newsletter.
St Mary’s Guild
We are a small friendly club who meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month except August.
We meet in the U.R.C hall at 2pm.
We enjoy a Christmas tea party a summer cream tea, and a local outing. We have interesting speakers
New members are welcome. Wendy Rogers
House Group
Between 5 and 7 of us have met most weeks during 2022, mostly in Zoom but with some periods meeting face-to-face either at Meg’s or Renate’s house. A thread throughout the year has been discussing John Pritchard’s excellent book ‘How to explain your faith’, alternating this with specific Bible studies. We completed our study of the Parables (begun in 2021). During Lent we studied the Lord’s Prayer, using the Pilgrim Course booklets and videos. Later in the year we looked at Steven Croft’s short course ‘Principles of deep water fishing’ and a series of reflections for Advent.
In 2023 we intend to study the book of Acts as our main focus and would be delighted to welcome new members to this oasis of reflection and mutual support.
Xplore
Xplore has continued to thrive during the year, with 8 students attending regularly before the summer. After the summer Xpedition, this has increased to a membership of 11 with most students attending most weeks. All but 2 of the students come from Christian families, but for these 2 students, Xplore has been the only regular Christian input they receive. We have returned to using Scripture Union resources, punctuated by ‘Big Questions’ from the students, and have welcomed Al McNicholl, Nigel Hawkes and Andrew Shergold as guest speakers. Since September, Elisa Pizzo, the student youth worker at the URC, has been assisting with the sessions, and Graham West (Head of Sixth Form) attends most weeks. The students continue to amaze me with their knowledge, conviction and eloquence, and I am blessed to have this opportunity to support them.
Xpedition
This was a new venture at the end of the summer holiday attempting to fill the gap, at least for the teenagers, left by the absence of a Fusion Holiday Club. The planning team was evenly split between St Mary’s, the URC and WCC. Our motto was ‘small and manageable’! We had around 25 young people of secondary school age attending three evenings of activities in St Mary’s and at Brill. There was also an optional night walk and sleepover in church, attended by about 20. On Sunday morning the young people joined in the 8am Communion Service. We followed a theme of ‘journeys’, looking at the Exodus, the Flight to Egypt, the Road to Emmaus and the Road to Damascus.
We were very pleased to note that the event had a very significant impact on at least two young people, who have moved forward on their Christian ‘journey’. Memorable moments included watching the young people being woken early on Sunday morning by some very gentle organ music, wide games at Brill and sharing meals together. The format worked extremely well, although we have noted opportunities for improving it, and we intend to repeat the event in 2023.
Wheatley C E Primary Academy School
Gill Standing the head teacher of the school is supported by her deputy and two co- chair governors. Teachers have worked hard to deliver the curriculum to the children while tracking and monitoring their progress. The school is still awaiting it’s SIAM’s inspection. There is a good Christian ethos at the school, which is helped by having a Christian Distinctiveness Committee and a Well-being Group. The Vicar and his Curate lead assemblies in the school weekly. The pupils attended their Harvest Service in Church. As with many schools the budget is very tight which may result in some redundancies.
Project – Reordering of St Mary’s Church Wheatley
Our aim for this ongoing project is to make St Mary’s a more welcoming place of worship and refurbish the building to meet the wider needs of the community.
David Benny and Richard Cosier have been working closely with the DAC and the professionals to obtain an answer to the floor finish in the Nave. We are still awaiting the Chancellors judgement on the final floor covering. The tender for the work has gone out to building contractors
and we are still aiming to start the work after the Easter Services 2023. Once we obtain the contract it will enable us to decide what work we can complete now and what we may have to do at another stage. It is important to get started as every delay makes it more expensive. Grant applications have continued under Michael Worthington during the year. Our grateful thanks to Richard and David for their expertise in working with the DAC and architects to reach this point and to Michael for the time and knowledge he has put into applying for grants. Also, thanks to the fundraising committee for all their continued work in organising fundraising events such as Macbeth, Angelorum Choir and Ceilidh. We are excitedly looking forward to seeing the work starting after Easter.
