Chairman’s Report on the year: **July 2024 – June 2025**

NLN-ST AGM 2025

6Sept25. Hereford.

I’ll start this brief summary of our 25[th] year of New Life Nepal with what the team here and even more the team in Nepal want to give: thanks! Thankyou so much…

- to you all – especially the many backbone givers: individuals, organisations and churches

- Thankyou for joining us today: it’s a great encouragement!

- Thankyou to many more who’ve contributed, baked, bought, prayed and told others about NLN.

- Thankyou (as chairman) to a great team in NLN’s Support Trust:

Janette, Richard, Barbara, Sarah and Vince. Penny’s been a huge help too.

- You have many and varied skills, most have been to visit, and all really care about it. You also manage to keep in touch and bear the load despite heavy commitments at work and elsewhere.

Next, as a Support Trust, we continue to adapt to changing needs and conditions in Nepal.

We told you last AGM of the relaunch back in Spring 2024 – _New Life House_ (NLH) becoming _Shikhar Hostel_ , no longer under control of the local authority’s political lead or influence. The Nepali leaders (Pratiksha and Alan, Pratiraksha and Aashish) have incorporated the previous practices, required by government law for NGOs, in the new company: such as accommodation, privacy, library and study facilities. They have also maintained regular contact with previous children now living elsewhere, giving help where needed.

October 2024 saw tension further reduced, as the controversial CDO (Chief District Officer) was moved elsewhere, partly we understand through the remaining municipal leadership not sharing his extreme agenda. This has allowed us now to reactivate our website www.newlifenepal.org which had been taken down due to sensitivities in September 2023.

## **Education Education Education!**

20 students have been on the scholarship scheme throughout the year, having education costs fully paid by us. Pratiraksha and Aashish have regular contact with staff, children and families, enabling the sponsorship to be removed from 3 students and given to others during the year, as family circumstances changed either way. Funding and effort need to be directed carefully and responsively. We now have 22 students – 12 girls and 10 boys. In addition of course, students fully resident at Shikhar Hostel are funded.

A year ago, we had appealed for sponsors in anticipation of further education for the three oldest residents at Shikhar Hostel (previously in NLH). We are so grateful now to have sponsorship for all three: Angel and Shristi now, and Angeli in 2 years time. Wise career planning is also hard in Nepal. After several previous possibilities, we have just heard that Angel is training in physiotherapy, and Shristi as a lab technician – both in high demand.

The greater flexibility of Shikhar Hostel has also allowed some students each year to stay during vital times for education, and two stayed for revision and SEE (final school exam) this Spring, having no suitable or safe place otherwise.

Now that we are well funded for bicycles (AGM 2024), 3 were bought initially, but we’re awaiting clarity over school and college movements before purchasing or wrongly allocating others. We anticipate news very soon on this.

**Back in the UK** , in support of this work, the Trust has met 5 times in the year – 2 in person and 3 video.

We also have taken every opportunity to be present at events – local fairs, cake sales, village fete etc. Many cakes have been baked and sold. Smartie tubes have been refilled with currency, Christmas puddings made…

And behind the scenes of course books have been kept, funds sent, and charity report requirements met.

## **Going forward**

Anticipating future education needs for the 22 now on the sponsorship scheme, we are able to cover for all students the increase in cost for moving from Primary to Secondary level, but realistically their prospects of employment are very poor without FE (either their ‘High School’ or specialised college eg. Nursing). But such courses vary hugely in cost, length and entry requirements.

Thanks to a generous donor, we are delighted to have recently put the seed for such a fund in place, ready for emerging FE opportunities over the next 5 years. Most will reach SEE in 3-5 years time, so we would warmly welcome any interest from potential donors on that timescale.

Rewinding 10 years to the start of school: remember worksheets? …animals, letters, words, numbers… They are experimenting with making and publishing their own worksheets. In part, this will save cost buying them, in part they can improve on what’s available. But they are also ever seeking sustainability and self-funding, hoping possibly to sell them to other schools in the area.

Over the last quarter century, I have found again and again that regular visits to Nepal, spending quality time with the team there, reap vital benefit in understanding and clear vision so that NLN can flourish for Far West Nepal. Last year this was clear from the Dixon family’s visit, and I plan to visit with at least one other in February 2026.

Finally, I want to appeal for help. We have sought to keep a broad age and skill range on the Trust, but it seems that time works against us! Maybe you are drawn in spirit to Far West Nepal? Or if you know others who may be willing to give their energy, skills, ideas… – interested in joining the Trust, we’d love to hear from you. And thankyou for joining us today.

God bless you all.

Nick Armstrong Chairman of New Life Nepal Support Trust.
