## AGM 17[th] July 2024

CHAIR’S REPORT for the year 2023-24

Our mission remains:

## **CARING FOR OUR LANDSCAPE AND GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE**

Oxfordshire Geology Trust (formerly the Oxfordshire RIGS Group) was founded in 2000. OGT is a non-profit making organisation with two primary objectives:

## **1. To protect and conserve geological sites and our landscape** :

   - Working with landowners we protect locally important sites through surveying and then designating them as Local Geology Sites (formerly known as RIGS - Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites), which can then be protected through the planning process. OGT has designated over 60 sites within the county.

**2. To raise awareness of the county's rich and varied Earth Heritage and geology** :

The only way that sites can be protected is if people believe that they are worth protecting. OGT oversees a series of projects and undertakes events at raising awareness both within local communities and in partnership with other organisations of the geo- importance of these sites.

The Geology Trusts is a national umbrella organization for Geo-conservation and Earth Heritage, providing a forum in which its members share ideas, develop best practice and organize inter-county projects and collaborative work with other conservation organisations.

OGT has:

- Continued to maintain its links with organisations, including other GT’s, Geo-conservation UK, Natural England, the Geologists’ Association, and within the County with OCC (Library Service and Primary Schools), TVERC, BBOWT, Friends of the Lye Valley (FoLV), the Woodeaton Liaison Group and the Lower Windrush Valley Project (LWVP), plus working with the County and District councils on geo-conservation enquiries related to planning applications.

- Remains committed to support and deliver an outreach programme compatible with Primary School KS2 and Home-Schooling programmes in Oxfordshire.

- OGT, via Exec Member Andrew Bayliss (County Library Service) has been instrumental in successfully arranging ‘Fabulous Fossil’ sessions and temporary displays in libraries.

- OGT attended the Wychwood Forest Fair in July and participated in the GA’s Festival of Geology at University College, London in November 2023.

- Presented a display at Abingdon Museum in March (part of the Atom Festival), and will participate in events at Wallingford, Faringdon and Milton-under-Wychwood.

- The Chair offers his sincere thanks to Mr Brian Smith (for reviewing our accounts), and the OGT Executive in supporting and organising events during the past year, and to all OGT members and supporters who have attended our events.

- We are working with OUMNH in Oxford to arrange a series (monthly during the winter) of geo-talks to be held at the Museum.
