It gives me pleasure to think that the New Hope Global has stepped into its 15th year. With a vision of providing care and support to the disadvantaged and deprived ethnic minority groups, specially the Bangladeshi community in Birmingham, the organisation started its journey in 2006. Over the last 15 years, we  have  secured  a  well-earned  reputation  of  making  a  significant  contribution  to  poverty alleviation and social welfare through innovative and sustainable projects with the valuable support of Birmingham City Council, NHS, GPs, Job Centre Plus, community organizations, local communities and various faith organisations including churches,temples, mosques and synagogues. 

Since  2014, New  Hope  Global  has  been  working  for  the  greater  welfare  of  the  community  as  a registered charity in accordance with the Charity Commission of England and Wales. With a noble mission of expanding the sphere of its dedicated services on a wider network, New Hope kicked off its journey as New Hope Global in December 2019. During the next few years, we plan on expanding our  operations  nationally  and  internationally  in  various  projects  encompassing  employability  skills training, integration through language training, health, fitness, mentoring and sports activities, entrepreneurial skills development, and youth development among many other initiatives to improve the livelihood of ethnic minorities. 

We are passing an extremely challenging time due to global pandemic and uncertainty stemmed from Brexit. These two incidents together have posed significant threats of imminent economic volatility and social insecurity. At this critical juncture, New Hope Global has grown strength to strength by expanding its intervention to the hard-to-reach people of the communities. During the year 2020, we have secured funding of £325,000.00 from 19 different funders for implementing 19 projects. Amidst the  pandemic  induced  lockdown, we  have  provided  unwavering  support  to  our  beneficiaries  by conducting  virtual  yoga  session, prescription  services, mental  health  advice  over  phone  and  food supplies. All these activities moved us closer to the community, help us realise the people’s need better and enabled us to understand how we should approach and deliver services to our beneficiaries. Through building digital network, our projects have significantly reduced loneliness and isolations among the beneficiaries during the lookdown period. This annual report 2021 encapsulates our activities and achievements over the last one year. 

I would like to convey my sincere thanks to my team comprised of extraordinarily enthusiastic staff, who are consistently being recognised for their excellent services and innovative approach to creating solutions that suits our clients. We pride ourselves on our relentless investments into nurturing talent, expertise and innovation and are committed to supporting the personal and professional growth of each team member. Moreover, we are sincere into adopting the latest IT technology and harnessing the organizational agility. Amidst this unstable economic and political climate, we feel responsible to continue  supporting  the  youth, unemployed  adults, families, faith  issues, health  problems  or  any struggling individual have need for our services.

## Manager's Message 

The Annual Report and Accounts of New Hope Global describe the activities of NHG. I would like to highlight the unprecedented time that we faced as a nation. This year has been catastrophic for all, especially amongst the most vulnerable groups of people within the communities. The Bangladeshi community  was  one  of  the  most  infected  groups  in  the  first  wave  of  the  pandemic  in  the  UK  and witnessed the highest rate of death.  NHG would like to pay tribute to all those who have lost loved ones to the pandemic and hope that lessons learned from this pandemic will help us save lives if another pandemic occurs. 

It was a privilege for me to join New Hope Global in August 2020, with 27 years’ experience of working in the third sector. This is my pleasure to note that amidst the multiple challenges posed by the pandemic, NHG has brought about myriad changes and innovation in its mode of project delivery. In the face of Covid-19 related restrictions, New Hope has provided fully configured and ready to be used devices to its beneficiaries who are predominantly digitally excluded and build a virtual network among the beneficiaries so that they can join the activities of befriending, yoga, relaxation technique, counselling, baking  and  recipe  sharing  and  quiz  sessions  and  get  rid  of  their  increased  level  of anxiety. 

Moreover, we have launched large scale myth bursting and awareness programme regarding Covid-19 vaccination among the communities in collaboration with Tesco, Aston Lane. NHG hosted several discussions and seminars to see if we could have taken any actions to save more lives. It was clear  that  families  living  in  overcrowded  housing, families  who  have  come  from  a  poverty-stricken background, people employed in the care industry, security, private hire taxis were the most infected. It did not help when false information was spreading faster in the community than facts. 

We are immensely proud of the NHG staff, trustees and volunteers who have shown incredible levels of commitment, consistency, and effort for the welfare of the community at the darkest hour. Moreover, we are overwhelmed by the unwavering support demonstrated to NHG by its beneficiaries. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our esteemed funders for their support in recent months – from small to big who stepped in to assist our pandemic response programmes to individuals who were moved  to  donate  food  parcels  for  the  community. We  cannot  write  this  report  without  conveying our sincere thanks to the NHS for their work and commitment during a challenging time.  We are proud of our NHS services and lucky that today we are a country that still has this service.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

## **Governing document:** 

New Hope Global is a charitable and company limited by guarantee, constituted under a trust deed dated 14[th] February 2014 and transferred into the charitable company on 22[nd] September 2014. It is a registered charity in England and Wales. The company was established under a Memorandum of Association, which established the objects and powers of the charitable company and is governed under its Articles of Association. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of new trustees:** 

The directors of the company are also charity trustees for the purposes of charity law. At the balance sheet date, the charity is managed by a board of three trustees including other four members appointed because they strongly endorse the charitable objectives of the organisation. When appointing trustees, the charity aims to ensure there is a broad range of relevant knowledge, skills and experience.

## **Trustee Induction and training:** 

The Trust actively endorses training at all levels of the charity. New trustees participate in an induction  process  that  new  staff  and  volunteers  should  follow, to  include  spending  time. engaged with all the Trust’s projects, relevant information regarding health and safety and personal safety and role-related knowledge where applicable including DBS clearance. 2020 Trustees attended number of training online to continue effectively acting as trustees under the conditions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The trustees of New Hope Global, were very quick to adapt and implement changes to ensure smooth and safe running of the charity, importantly  ensuring  the  safety  of  staff, volunteers  and  of  its  beneficiaries  was paramount.

## **Organisational structure:** 

The trustees decide on all major new initiatives and are regularly updated on grants, budgets,public relations and fundraising campaigns. New initiatives are normally developed by centre manager and project coordinators in consultation with the Chairman and trustees where appropriate, supported by an assessment of project needs. Trustees receive regular financial updates, which form the basis of the routine financial monitoring. The charity works to build a culture of transparency at all levels to ensure all partners and stakeholders in the organisation can participate in its development. We frequently listen and receive feedback to and from our clients and beneficiaries and many of the service delivery improvements come directly from us **“** beneficiaries **”** according to their needs and demands.The manager, Chairman and the Treasurer hold regular team meetings to monitor and control the organisation. Specific projects are managed through project steering committee where appropriate. Each project manager is also encouraged to contribute to fortnightly e-mail updates, which are circulated to volunteers, staff, and trustees. Unfortunately, we had to cease the activities of our volunteers in the first lockdown, but they continued to keep in touch and we were able to engage them towards the end of 2020. 

## **Risk management:** 

A risk register is used in association with risk assessments under the charity’s health and safety policy to manage risk. Risks addressed range from those associated with sources of income, through continuity of service to matters such as personal security and lone working. Systems have been set in place to mitigate risk and where appropriate, staff have been instructed accordingly. The trustees last conducted a fresh review of major risks during 2017/2018 in the light of the substantial growth that the charity has experienced and changes to the risk register are discussed at each trustees meeting. However  no  one  could  have  envisaged  the  devastation  and  impact  global pandemic would have on charities businesses and individuals, thus NHG have carried out a full and extensive risk assessment to ensure the safety and welfare of our staff, tenants  and  visitors  and  are  continually  monitoring  and  updating  this  assessment  as government guidance changes. 

Through continuity of service to matters such as personal security and lone working, working from home and in isolation. Systems have been set in place to mitigate risk and where appropriate, staff have been instructed accordingly. 

The charity’s fundraising strategy and plans are regularly reviewed and updated. Such reviews ensure we fully diversify funding to mitigate the risk of over-dependence on one source of income. All NHG staff received online bid writing and funding training, giving individuals the ability to make small to medium size applications, as a result we secured funding from 19 different charities and funders.  NHG has a diverse portfolio and fundraising goals which included: adding to the range of income-generating social and charity activities, especially donations from charity grants investing social media campaigns whose goals continue to include raising the profile of thecharity’s activities nationally and recruiting new donors.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

## **Objectives and aims** 

The charity’s objects and principal activities are as follows: 

- a) To develop the capacity and skills of members of the socially and economically disadvantaged communities of Birmingham and its surrounding area (in this document called the area of benefit) in such a way that they are better able to identify and help meet their needs and to participate more fully in society. 

- b) To relieve poverty and sickness, in particular but not exclusively, among Bangladeshi people living or working in the area of benefit. 

- c) To provide or assist in the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life. 

- d) Such other charitable purposes for the public benefit as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine. 

- e) to prevent poverty, improve health, education and housing for deprived people (including refugees) living in Bangladesh and other countries by addressing their needs, developing employability skills and helping them integrate into the society 

## **Public benefit** 

The trustees confirm that they have referred to the advice contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity’s aims and objectives, and in planning future activities. The trustees refer to public benefit throughout this report. 

## **Mission and vision** 

The overall mission of New Hope Global is to support the disadvantaged community members of the UK by providing them with quality services with a view to harnessing entrepreneurship and promoting cultural cohesion. Our main vision is to become the best charity organisationby 2021 by rendering dedicated services for the betterment of socially and economically disadvantaged Ethnic Minority communities in UK and beyond.

## **Our Projects** 

## **New Project for 2020/2021** 

## Digital Development to Support Community Project Management- CAF funding 

To improve the logistic capacity of project implementation and management, New Hope global received  a  grant  from  CAF  Resilience  Fund  to  implement Digital  Development  to  Support – Community Project Management project during October 2020 March 2021. The grant has enabled us to purchase staff computers, tablets, digital boards, projector, stationaries,headphones, and support staff salaries, and digital skill training which has substantially enhanced  the  organizational  capacity  and  sustainability. The  number  of  direct and  indirect beneficiaries of the project are 100 and 300 persons respectively. 

## Enhance Digital Skills to Relieve Loneliness Covid-19 Relief Fund. 

New Hope Global received a funding from the Corona Virus Community Support Fund of The National  Lottery  Community  Fund  and  Home  Office  to  implement  Enhance  digital  skills  to relieve loneliness project during September 2020 to February 2021. Due to the Corona Virus induced  lookdown  maintenance  of  a  healthy  lifestyle  physically  and  mentally  has  become  a grave challenge  for everyone, particularly for digitally excluded elderly people. With the help of these grants, NHG has organised virtual workshops which has been proved to be effective in combating the loneliness of the vulnerable adults in the Community through the digital befriending interventions. This project has helped our beneficiaries build a network, to inform, interpret and explain government guidance and other mental, physical health and supports and information related to government's financial support. The project will positively impact the lives of 30 persons directly and 200 persons indirectly. 

## Stay Healthy with Gardening Stay Healthy with Gardening- ernest Hecht Charitable Trus t 

Focusing community development and cohesion through gardening in the inner-city areas of Birmingham, New  Hope  Global  designed  a  project  titled  Stay  Healthy  with  Gardening. To implement the project during  May 2020 to April 2021, a grant has been received from Ernest Hecht Charitable Trust was secured. Under the framework of the project, all the activities related to the project including purchase of gardening materials, beneficiary's recruitment, virtual platform for project workshops and selection of gardens for virtual project demonstration were done in compliance to the national COVID 19 guidelines. The beneficiaries   were  encouraged  to  use  digital  platform  for  receiving  advice  and  trainings  on land preparation, seed sowing, plants sowing, and intercultural operation. This project helped the beneficiaries stay mentally and physically active through gardening within a digital community network. This project will directly benefit 50 and indirectly 300 people.

## Get Skilled and Beat Isolation- Cloth Workers Foundation 

New  Hope  Global  received  a  grant  from  the  Cloth  workers  Foundation  to  implement the project titled Get Skilled and Beat Isolation. The grant supported purchase of digital devices and equipment for staff and beneficiaries. The tablets procured for the beneficiaries facilitated the  creation of a vibrant virtual network and helped them enjoy the benefits of getting connected. During the stressful time of pandemic, this virtual network played a vital role in preserving mental and physical wellbeing of the beneficiaries. The project implemented during January-March 2021 substantially strengthened the virtual infrastructure and project delivery mechanism of the organisation. The number of direct and indirect beneficiaries of the project are 30 and 150 persons respectively. 

## Tackling Inequalities – Sports Birmingham 

To promote an active lifestyle, New Hope Global implemented the project titled Tackling Inequalities with the grant from Sports Birmingham. To achieve the objective of the project  50 activity boxes were delivered to 50 families in Aston and Ladywood area which included table-top games accessories, drawing materials, storybooks, etc. The items of the resource boxes have helped the family members engage with multiple physical and recreational activities during the lookdown period. The project directly and indirectly benefited around 50 and 250 persons, respectively. 

## Virtual Intervention for Tackling Loneliness Neighbour Hood Network Scheme ( NNS). 

Since the outbreak of coronavirus, all our community programmes came to a halt. In order to keep the community connected, we have implemented project titled Virtual Intervention for Tackling Loneliness to keep our older beneficiaries active and free of social isolation and loneliness in the Erdington and Ladywood area. The programme will met the main objectives of this fund  by  providing  effective  and  targeted  relief  for  those  most  at  risk  of  loneliness  as  a  result  of Covid-19.We were able to  keep in  touch with our older existing beneficiaries and new beneficiaries through virtual social  platforms such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Zoom and Skype, video conferencing, and telephone calls.With that goal in mind, we were able to engaging our volunteersas, Virtual  Assistants,  and   our  existing  staff  to  create  a  virtual  environment  to  get  all the older beneficiaries connected and playfully engaging them.  The project directly and indirectly benefited around 100 persons, respectively. 

## Community Match Challenge DCMS: 

NHG has been awarded a grant from Lloyds Bank foundation DCMS funding - this is match funding to deliver some of our existing projects between October 2020-March 2021, this enabled us to extend four existing  posts  by  a  further  6 months.  The  DCMS  award  will enable  us  to  deliver  all  the projects as planned which were adversely affected due the pandemic.

## “Healthier Community through sustainable gardening” 

The grant awarded by Cadent Foundation came at a very crucialtime.  Community through sustainable gardening  allowed  us to secure 2 plots for 60 Heath and Aston, helping  and encouraging in creating meaning friendship   amongst  the  groups, supporting  with  social  anxiery, reducing  loneliness and isolation.Also supporting beneficiaries  to carry out all year roundgardening, providing skills to create compost through garden waste. The other aspect of the project is to give beneficiaries skills to consider setting up small business though growing herbs and  spices,andfeel the benefits of eating fresh produce, on regular shopping. Through the activities of this project beneficiaries were able to access professional mental health advice,online Yoga and wellbeing related workshops. 

## Covid 19 Recovery Grant 

Lloyds Bank Foundation funding us for  Core costs. In January 2021, we received  grant  funding: this is  an  unrestricted amount to  support the development of the organisation and its business.  We will are working with external  partners appointed by Lloyds Bank  Foundation. The grant started in January 2021. NHG Management and Trustees took the to recruit a  Business Development Coordinator initially.  This will help to enhance and develop the organisation further.

## **NEW HOPE’S GLOBAL VENTURES** 

With a noble mission of expanding the sphere of its dedicated services in a broader network, New Hope kicked off its journey as New Hope Global in December 2019. During the next five years, we plan on expanding our operations locally, regionally, nationally and internationally in various projects encompassing employability skills training, integration through language training, health, fitness, mentoring and sports activities, entrepreneurial and soft skills development and youth development among many other initiatives to improve the livelihood of ethnic minorities. 

New Hope has fostered a partnership with the Reeds Consultancy Bangladesh with a view to improving mental well being of the Ready-Made Garment Workers of Bangladesh. Moreover, recently in liaison with a prominent Bangladeshi NGO Bangladesh Women Workers’ Centre (Bangladesh Nari Sramik Kendra) New Hope will spearhead its activities to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the women workers of Bangladesh adversely affected by the outbreak of COVID-19.

## **NEW HOPE’S ONLINE FUNDRAISING** 

Fundraising is the way in which charities ask for donations or other financial support from the public, businesses, Government, foundations and others. Voluntary donations and other fundraising activity provides the funds that enables the nation to have a thriving voluntary sector and provides a wide array of charitable services that benefits people and communities at home and abroad. 

Giving to good causes is a huge part of our culture in the UK, with the British public alone donating over £9 billion annually, and supporting charities through a range of other fundraising activities. 

New Hope dedicated staff, committed volunteers, and renowned management committee members, third parties and fellow charity supporters are working together to raise fund for the charity. 

Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus and national lockdown, all the face to face fundraising had to be stopped to halt the spread of the virus. We have therefore, started online fundraising efforts. Our online fundraising campaigns connect people with causes they care about. Our fundraising goals also include developing positive, sustainable and respectful relationships with supporters and embedding the values of our organisation into our strategy and approach to raising money.

The report and the website (www.nhglobal.org.uk) provide information about the constitution of our charity, its organisational structure, and appointment of trustees and advisers. It also enlists our honourable Patrons and their roles in the charity.

- Accounting and reporting by charities, approval date of the report or who served in such a position in the reporting period in 2020-2021. 

• New Hope Global is looking forward to working together for the community cohesion, charity funders, local authority, service providers and various community organisations for the year 2021 and 2022 for the benefit of the local people in the harmonious society.

## **FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021** 

The Trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act, submit their annual report and the unaudited financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2021. The trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" issued in 2005 in preparing the annual report and financial statements of the charity. 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

## Governing document 

The charity is governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association 

## Organisation 

A board of trustees of up to three members, who meet regularly, administers the charity. There are four additional executive committee members covering the development  and  finance of the charity effectively. 

Risk policy 

The trustees have examined the major strategic, business and operational risks which the charity faces and confirm that systems have been established to enable regular reports to be produced so that the necessary steps can be taken to lessen these risks. 

## Objectives and activities 

The principal activity of the organisation is to aid the capacity and skills of members of the socially and economically disadvantaged Bangladeshi community of Birmingham and its surrounding areas (in this document called the area of benefit) in such a way that they are better able to identify and help meet their needs and to participate more fully in society. We aim relieve poverty, sickness and disability among Bangladeshi people living or working in the area of benefit. In addition, we shall provide other facilities for Bangladeshi people living or working within the area of benefit. The  organisation may decide to undetake other charitable activities from time to time, this will be reviewed on an individual basis. 

## **Financial review** 

The  restricted  income  includes  various  grants  received  during  the  financial  year  ended  31 March  2020. Main donors  are as follows  : National  Lottery  Community  Fund  £47102, National  Lottery  Heritage  Fund £12,200.00,Ernest Hechtb Charitable Foundation £7971.68, The Cloth Workers Foundation £2300.00, ladywood NNS £15,503.24, Groundwork £1587.20, COVID-19  £5000.00, Charities trust £23902.00, Covid-19 response  £9928.00, Erdington  NNS £4847.15, Lloyds Foundation £63317.00, Lloyds Bank Foundation DCMS £20000.00, CAF resiliance Fund £28822.00, Garfield Weston Foundation £5000.00.

## **Trustees' responsibilities in relation to the financial statements** 

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of company law are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year , which give a true and fair view of the state of the affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for the year. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to: 

- select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently; 

- 

   - observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP; 

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; 

- state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the 

financial statements; 

- prepare the financial statements on a going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation. 

The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

I report on the accounts which are set out on pages 5 to 12 

## **Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and examiner** 

The trustees who are also directors of the company for the purpose of company law are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to: 

Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act; follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of independent examiner's report** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a "true and fair view" and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. 

## **Independent examiner's statement** 

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 

1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements: 

a. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; and 

b. to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities

## 1. **Accounting policies** 

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention in accordance with the accounting policies set out below. 

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with FRS102 Section 1A - The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland and the Companies Act 2006. 

## **Cashflow statement** 

The Company has taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No.1 from the requirement to produce a cashflow statement on the grounds that it is a small company. 

## **Incoming resources** 

All incoming resources are included in the SOFA when the charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. 

## **Resources expended** 

All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all costs related to the category, where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with use of the resources. 

## **Turnover** 

Turnover comprises the invoiced value of goods and services supplied by the company. 

## **Tangible fixed assets and depreciation** 

Tangible fixed assets are stated at cost less depreciation. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off the cost less estimated residual value of each asset over its expected useful life, as follows: 

Land and buildings - 3% per annum of cost Plant and Machinery - 25% per annum of cost Fixtures and Fittings - 10 % per annum of cost 

## **Grants received** 

Grants related to capital expenditure on tangible assets are credited to the profit and loss account at the same rate as the depreciation on the assets to which the grants relate.

Turnover is attributable solely to continuing operations and derives from various grants.
