Trustees’ Report

Objectives and activities:

Our aim is to share the life-changing love of Jesus in and around Chipping Norton.

Our charitable objectives as set out in our governing document are as follows:

The advancement of the Christian faith, including: -

(1) the advancement of Christ’s kingdom by the faithful teaching of the scriptures at St Mary’s Church Chipping Norton and in the region and by the recruitment, education, training and sending of gospel ministers whether paid or unpaid around the United Kingdom and abroad to establish and renew Christian churches and ministries related thereto.

(2) to provide support to youth workers and others working with the elderly and families in evangelistic teaching and other pastoral work.

(3) to provide support for religious education in accordance with the Christian faith in schools, Sunday schools, classes, seminars, lectures and conferences.

(4) the relief of need, hardship, physical or mental distress; including support for those with problems of unemployment and re-employment.

(5) the support of Christians who are persecuted by reason of their faith in the context of the work of St Mary’s Church Chipping Norton provided always that such support shall be nonpolitical in nature.

(6) the support of Christians who are engaged full-time in the missionary work of proclaiming the gospel and in bringing others to believe in Jesus Christ and to live in accordance with his teaching.

In the past, we have employed Youth, Children’s and Families Workers and Outreach Workers to support the work of St. Mary’s Church, Chipping Norton; and to run projects, courses and activities for people in and around Chipping Norton. Since January 2023, we no longer employ outreach workers, and since September 2023 we no longer employ youth workers, but we continue to give grants to support the work of the church with Youth, Children and Families.

The Trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. All of our charitable activities focus on benefitting the public in and around Chipping Norton.

In particular our grants enable projects within St. Mary’s Primary School, Chipping Norton during the school day, and support with activities at Chipping Norton School as well as a weekly youth club (Remix) at Glyme Hall, Chipping Norton, which is open to any child from the right age group wishing to attend. These measures ensure that the Charity is of benefit to a significant number of people locally.

Achievements and Performance:

The Chipping Norton Area Christian Trust works closely with two other charities; The Branch Trust, Chipping Norton (1191055) and St. Mary’s Church, Chipping Norton (1132070) and often activities are of a joint nature, with additional resources being provided by the other charities.

Youth Work:

Activities delivered or supported financially by CNACT include Sunday morning sessions and Friday evening Small Groups. 1-1 discipleship also continues with a small number of teenagers.

When the Youth Pastor resigned in October 2023, several volunteers stepped in to manage youth activities for five months until a new Youth Pastor was appointed. CNACT continues to support the youth work in the church through grant funding rather than through direct employment.

We again enjoyed a wonderful weekend away, incorporating fun, games, worship, teaching and prayer, and intend to build on this success in the coming year.

Youth Hikes continued at intervals through the year, serving teenagers from both church and wider community.

The relationship with Chipping Norton School has continued to grow and develop very positively, including 1:1 Mentoring (involving 10 young people on either a weekly or fortnightly basis), which offers support around family life, school, mental health or other key issues.

Remix, our weekly Friday afternoon Youth Club has continued with approximately 25 young people attending each week during term-time. We were, however, joined by Adventure Plus and Chipping Norton Theatre, who ran various workshops with the young people.

Children’s work:

Support continued for the families associated with St. Mary’s Church and from Chipping Norton more widely, (including regular Sunday morning sessions and Wednesday morning ‘Minis’ (carer and toddler group), as well as some more social gatherings to help restore relationships interrupted by Covid.

The Chipping Norton Area Christian Trust (Charity number: 1158463) Accounts for 1 June 2022 – 31 May 2023

Financial review:

As of 31 May 2024, the Charity had cash funds of £19,236, £2,768 of which was unrestricted, and the remainder restricted.

Income included:

The charity also continued to receive ongoing standing orders from individuals associated with St. Mary’s Church, Chipping Norton.

Expenditure dropped from £107,727 in 2022-23 to £9,511 in 2023-34, largely due to the absence of a youth pastor for 5 months and the community worker moving over to the Branch Trust. Expenditure of £5,052 was related to staff salaries, pensions, social security costs. A grant of £3,450 was paid to St Mary’s Church towards salary for the Children’s and Families Pastor. A further £511 was paid for general administrative costs including bank charges, filing fees, software fees and accounting fees, and finally £498 in insurance costs.

The Charity does not have a reserves policy and all the resources held at 31 May 2024 are for the purposes of employing staff and supporting associated projects. The charity considers that it is not necessary to hold a set level of reserves, as the main activity of the charity is to employ staff on threeyear contracts, and the Trustees are satisfied that there will be sufficient standing orders, donations and grants to fulfil the Charity’s obligations.

Structure, governance and management:

The organisation is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, incorporated on 4 November 2020 and first registered as a charity on 5 September 2014. The charity is governed under its constitution, which sets out the objects and powers of the charity.

The Trustees when complete consist of at least three and not more than seven individuals (with optimum five). At the AGM the members elect persons to be Trustees to fill the vacancies arising.
