Charities Commission Refresh Annual Report 2024-5
Refresh continues to have a significant effect within the local community of Weymouth & Portland and is greatly valued for all that it does. Having not had a dedicated coordinator for the past two years, during which time the trustees managed to ensure that all the work carried on normally, it has been good that a new coordinator has been appointed and we can see already that the charity as a whole has gained new impetus.
The year has seen plenty of activity within the four main projects which run under the Refresh banner, namely, Christians Against Poverty, Keep in Touch, Fresh Start and Family Matters.
The CAP team has had a very successful year with 25 clients being declared debt free. The three debt coaches have had full diaries and there are clients queuing up to get help when there is a space in the diary. There have been lots of activities to help support the clients particularly providing well stocked hampers at Christmas and, at Easter, a chicken, together with all the vegetables needed for an Easter dinner. The work of CAP is now an integral part of the community with many other agencies recommending CAP to clients in debt and working with CAP to provide help and advice.
Keep in Touch has continued the work started during COVID in collecting and disseminating all the information about warm spaces, opportunities for meals and meeting places to help people find convenient places to make new friends or share time with existing friends. The KiT coordinator retired during the year but it is good to know that this work will continue within Refresh and is being part funded by the local town council.
Fresh Start has held 3 courses during the year to help people with any kind of addiction. Each course lasts for ten weeks and involves group and individual sessions. The team members delivering the course are very experienced and a support group meets weekly for those who have been through the course and want to keep in contact.
Family Matters has had a very busy year. The work is split into two sections, Baby Bank and Adult Clothing. The work expanded quickly during the year resulting in the need for even larger premises than those referred to in last year’s report. There is now a well organised team of dedicated volunteers who run the project and which is planning for increased activity in the year ahead.
The local church leaders meet regularly and organise events in the town at both Christmas and Easter. What started as a small charity in preparation for the 2012 Olympics is now well established in the area and looking forward to the year ahead.
