At the beginning of this year the country was back in Lockdown. However, the work of Refresh carried on.
Safe Sleep was able to operate albeit in a very different way. The guests were given bed and breakfast at a hotel at the far end of Weymouth Bay. For the first week volunteers turned up to help on the breakfast shift but it soon became apparent that there were too many people so this stopped. Dinner was cooked and delivered by volunteers from churches across the town, each church being responsible for one week.
Family Matters has continued to receive and give out baby clothes, equipment and toys to families who need them. To date there have been over 80 referrals. As well as the garage at the Lantern, Family Matters now has a larger storage space on an industrial estate where health professionals and families can drive to and drop in. This Christmas there is going to be a toy bank to provide extra presents for their children. People can come and have a cup of tea and choose toys to take away.
The two Keep in Touch projects, Chat2gether and Pen2paper continued as well. Groups of people had a weekly chat over the phone and others received letters from a volunteer and some chose to reply. In July these projects came to a natural end as people began to go out and meet with each other. Keep in touch now has a variety of in person activities including bingo, walks, crafts and stretch-along.
The new Christians Against Poverty (CAP) debt centre team has worked tirelessly all the way through lockdown. They have welcomed new clients, collected the required information and stayed in regular contact with clients over the phone. In person meetings have now mostly resumed although some still prefer to connect on the phone. Fresh Start continued to meet on zoom and in September, following their training at the beginning of the year, the first Life Skills course started with a small group and they have loved being together to share ideas and learn new things. The money course has also met online.
The church leaders’ monthly meeting and Refresh Praise continued online until July. Both then resumed in person, meeting outside if possible but ever mindful of government guidelines and people’s safety. Again, the Good Friday walks of witness and town centre act of worship had to be cancelled.
