As Healthwalch Essex has been recovering from the impact ol the pandemic it has been really good ty have our staff back at

local communities. We have recruited more staff and been successful in securing more interesting pr(iecls from a wide range

During the last year, a5 part olthi5 work Ihe Die Well and Stay Well report5 have been published. Die Well Iocus5ed on end ol
Ille care in residential and nursing homes and the support lo live at home. Stay Well locussod on people living with long term
condilion5 and their carer5 and additionally, hospilal admission avoidance and 5UPPOrting people awaiting elective surgery.
'Happiness, Heartbreak & Hope Expeiienees of Ferlilily and Baby Loss in Essex
Fertility can sometimes be considered 3 tsboo topic. Healthwatch Essex wanted to bring forward the hidden voices around
this topic and allow for people's sluries tts be shared. We wanted 10 ensure this project would allow othef people going
through their fertility journeys to be able lo relate to these stories. The stories were shared in a variety ol ways Includino a
podcast lilled 'Henry's Legacy." A life Well Lived.. a number ol short videos shared on our TikTok channel, which have been
watched over 27.WO times, 3nd through our social media channels.
Essex Fella's Forum
The Essex Fella's Forum launched in October 2021 and has provided a monthly meeting place for menevery first Monday ol
the month. They meet at a local pub where men Informally discuss Issues such as health, wellbeirig, rren's he3lth screening,
lalheihood, confidence, sell-esleem and more. The loium has since incorporated physical aclivily Ihioughoul the calendar
year, participating in activities outdoors such as fishing, gardening, community allotments, BBQS, and 'walks and tslks,.
Information & Guidance
The pèst year has been a busy one loi Ihe Inloimalion ancj Guidance Team, with a sieèdy flow ol enquiries, an increèse in the
number ol reports we have produced. and a return lo a more robust outreach programme out in the comffunity, We have
regularly participated in a wide variety ol meelings ac1055 Ihe Slalulory, voluntary and communily sectors in every part ol the
county, to ensure that the livecj experience ol the people ol Essex is represented efteclively, These have included regular
repre5enlalion al the Essex County Council People & Familie5 Scrutiny Cornmitlee and Health, Overview & Policy Scrutiny
Committee, the LeDeR learning cjisabililies mortality review panel, and various meetings implemented by the Essex Alliances,

Young Mental Health Ambassadors
Have been working collaboratively with Children ènd Adolescent Mental Health Seroices ICAMHSlsince 2018 to ensure that
5ewices are designed and delivered with the voices olthe young sefvice users included within this process. To enable young
people lo actively be Involved. the Young Men131 Health Ambassèdor IYMHAI programme was created with Healthwalch
E55e¥- training, recruiting and 5UPPOrting the young people to feel confi'dent in sharing the1rvie￿.
Trauma Ambassador Group ITAGI
Carne logether to ulilise their skills and lived experiences of trauma to help inforTh, Shape and develop health, care and
wellbeing Se￿1CeS. Members have all experienced traum3. which can arise from a wide variety Dlcauses, including domestic
bu5e, 5e¥ual abuse, exposure to crime and bereavement. The Group ascertained that there wa5 a clear need to iwprove
conversations bebNeen health 3nd care professionals and people living wilh trauma. In response to this need, they created
'Trauma Card5 35 a tool to empower individuals who have experienced trauma lo eomrnunicate Thore effectively with
healthcère professionals. Winner Dlthe'most Promising Pilot" at the Integrated Health Awards 2023.

Hidden Voices Neknvork
Healthwatch Essex launched a new Hidden Voice5 Network in july consisting ol groups and individuak frorn across E55ex,
including ethnically diverse communities. LGBTQ+ groups. faith groups and refugees The Network is amed at connecting
communitie5 UP with organ15ations to ensure that all voice5 are being heard within health and 50ci31 care.
Career Oevelopmenl at Healthwalch Essex
We currently have three apprentices starting their careers with us, learnirbg on theiob 3nd cwbpleting qualifications. Two are
51udying media and communicalion5, one business administration. They are key members ol our team. Our newest
apprentice Gr3c@ won a competition during National Apprentice Week with her 3PPfenlic@ship providerfor hèr insights into
her experience.
Understanding Inequality
For the past two years, Healthwatch Essex have been working In collaboration with Mid and South Essex Foundation Trust
IMSEI lo improve their hospital services loi people living with learning disabilities ILDI. As part ol the Understanding
Inequality project, several participants living with learning disabilities shared their experiences Vlslting hospital lor a short
film. They also attended workshops with heallhcère staff, charities and community groups lo ctrproduce a series ol
recommend3tions designed lo improve access to hospital sewices. Those recommendation5 3re now being put Into
practice thanks lo the involvement of staff and patient champions, helping lo improve the experiences ol the 17,000 people
with learning disabilities loc3lly. In 2022, the Understanding Inequality project was nominated lor the Learning Disabilities
Initiaiive ol the Year Award at the Health Servicelournal Patient SaleiyAwaids.

Healthwatch Essex is primarily funded by the Department ol Health and the Department lor Communitie5 & Local
Government, via Essex Couniy Council. Ouiing the year to 31 March 2023 the Charity received income from Ihis

£642K12022.- £587KI- the levels ol expenditufe attributable to each ol the headline aclivilies outlined in Section l ol

is Its overreliance on funding from Essex County Council. In order to mitigate this overreliance, it Is Ihe company's policyto
develop complementary commercial work to diversify income streams.

they will be able to continue the charity 5 current activitie5 while consideration 15 given to ways in which additional fund5 may

He31thw3tch Essex has a lot o(exciting projects In the pipeline. Upcoming research topics includetransgendef experiences
ol heèllhcare (Transitions) and Irritable Bowel Disease in pregnancy. Our Engagemeni learn will expltye experiences of
growing older in Essex and hospital discharge, as well as an exciting engagement opportunity with schoolchildren learning
about disabilities in an innovative way. A Dew ambassador group loi adults With experience ol mental health 15 being
developed and we will continue to grow ourexisting 3mb3ssador schemes. We have an outreach programme pl3nned to
attend numerous Pride events across the countythis summer to engage with our LGBTQ+ community and promote our
Tr3nsitions project.
The Impact olthe cost ol living Increases has affected everyone, in particular Ihe most vulnerable people In our comrnunities
and HWE staff have been there lo ofter inloimalion and guidance lo even more people. HWE will continue lo support our
staff to deal with the cost ol living crisis and ensure their health and wellbeing with access lo a range 015UPPOrt 3nd advice.
The worsening situation in terms ol health and social care provision has had and continues lo have a huge Impact on the
health and wellbeing of our local communities with Increasing numbers seeking support and guidance from ourtearns.
Our Chief Executive has made a significant contribution to the e5tablishtnent and implefflenlation olour 3 local IntegTrted
Cafe Partnerships- working With local Healthwalch is key to understsnding the lived experience ol health and social care and
enables the ICP'S to develop their plan5 and piiorilies.
The wayahead is not wiihout ils challenge5, in particular finding way5 to get over the crisis in health and social care and
ensuring that sufficient funding is allocated to these seNices. We will continue to work closely with our colleagues in the
Integrated Care Partner5hip5 and support thern lo lind innovative new ways olworking together lo provide more and
improved care and support lor our local communities,

1.1 Accounting eonvention
The financi31 statements h3ve been prepared in accordance with the charity's governing document, the Companies Act
2006 and Accounling and Reporting by Charities.. Statement ol Recommended Practice applicable lo chJities
preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in tho UK ard Ropublic ol
Ireland IFRS 1021" la5 amended for accounting periods commencing from I january 20191. The charity 15 a Public Benefit
Entity as defined by FRS 102.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency ol the charity. Monetary amounts in
these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.
The financial statements have been prepared under the historic31 cost convention, modified to include certain lin8ncia1
instrurnenis ai lair value. The principal accounting policies adopted are sel out below.
1.2 Going concern
The directors have considered the financial position and financial forecasts lor the charity and are satisfied that the charity
will continue to meet 115 liabilities as Ihey fall due. Based on this a55e55menl these account5 have been prepared on a
going concern basis.
1.3 Charitable funds
Unrestricted fund5 are available lor use at the discretion ollhe Trustees in furtherance ol Iheircharitable objectives.

Incorne is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions h84e been met, the
amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.
Cash donations are recognised on receipt, Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified ol the
donation, unless perform3nce conditions require deferral ol the amount. Incoffle tax recoverable in relation to donalions
received under Gift Aid 01 deeds of covenant is recognised at the time olthe donation.
Legacies are recognised on receipt or olhewise il the charity has been notified ol an impending d6tribution. the amount
