Evangelistic Medical Missions Abroad (EMMA)

Registered Charity No 1158347

Annual Report 2022-23

Charitable objects

EMMA’s objects are to relieve sickness and preserve and protect the health of people in developing countries through the promotion of medical aid and services to remote localities who have limited access to medical and dental care, and by collaborating with other local charities and evangelical churches in those countries to help deliver health care in their communities, all undertaken with a Christian Ethos.

Trustees

EMMA’s trustees are Dr Richard Scott, Miss Caroline Louis and Mrs Doreen Wardle. They are supported by a core team which meets twice a year to plan and review mission trips overseas.

Finances

Income for the year ending March 2020 was £25,723 and expenditure was £32,389. About 90% of this turnover relates to one mission trip, details as follows. The shortfall was covered by reserves accumulated over the previous three years, when EMMA was inactive owing to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Progress and Achievements

The Charity supported a medical mission to Massailand, South Kenya, in February 2023. A team of 11 health professionals and one lay person were hosted by Rev David Kereto, an indigenous Christian leader. The team was joined by a Massai dentist and about 20 staff, both paid and voluntary, who provided support, an interpreting service, catering and transport.

The team was based in two communities, Oleparriata and Kishermoruak, and a total of seven clinical days were provided by the team. Clinics were conducted in school buildings kindly vacated for us by the local teaching staff. Common presentations were unwell children, adults with musculo-skeletal pain and disabilities, dental problems and refractive errors.

For more details see the EMMA website: www.uk-emma.org

The Trustees reviewed the public benefit in the light of Charity Commission guidance and agreed that EMMA’s activities benefit the public in the locations chosen for mission, with no discrimination as regards gender, age, race, faith, disability or sexuality.
