Organisational structure
The charity is governed by between 5 and 7 trustees, currently there are 5 trustees. All trustees provide their services on a voluntary basis and receive no remuneration.
The management and organisation of the charity’s main event of the year, the Wilmslow Half Marathon, is carried out by a Committee of 8 people. All committee members provide their services on a voluntary basis and receive no remuneration.
Objectives
The following objects of the Wilmslow Half Marathon CIO are for the public benefit:-
-
1) The promotion of community participation in healthy recreation for the benefit of the inhabitants of Wilmslow by the provision of funds and facilities for running/athletics and playing rugby, hockey, lacrosse and cricket and such other sports as the trustees may in their absolute discretion deem appropriate; and
-
2) To support such general charitable purposes as the trustees in their absolute discretion may determine.
Activities
The Wilmslow Half Marathon raises funds by organising an annual half marathon race in the roads around Wilmslow and Mobberley. The event is held at the end of March or beginning of April and has been held since 1984. Usually between 3-5000 competitors enter the event. Any surplus generated by the event is distributed to sports clubs and other organisations in the area. In 2019 the committee rebranded the event as the Wilmslow Running Festival and incorporated a 10Km race and a children’s fun run.
Last Financial Year’s event was originally scheduled for 15 March 2020, however due to Covid the race had to be postponed and entrants were offered three options: (i) to carry forward their entry to a new race date, or (ii) to run a ‘virtual’ half marathon on a course of their own choosing, or (iii) to donate their entry fee. About 1800 entrants opted for (i) and postponed their entry to the new race date. The event eventually took place on 12 September 2021. Therefore, no event took place in the 2020 Financial Year ending 30 June 2020 nor in the 2021 FY ending 30 June 2021.
A figure of £35,888 was specified as a surplus in the 2020 FY (see Page 4) with the intention of using this sum for donations when the event eventually takes place.

Financial policies
Reserves
The Wilmslow Half marathon maintains a reserve account of £60,000. The trustees believe this is sufficient to cover costs incurred if the event has to be cancelled or postponed at short notice.
Funding
The charity’s income comes from three sources:
-
Entry fees paid by competitors , because of the postponement due to Covid to 12 Sep 2021, entry fees received during the year were substantially reduced compared with previous years, £13,649 was received.
-
Sponsorship by local organisations, provided £1,000 income.
-
Gift Aid - entrants are able to nominate part of the entry fee as Gift Aided and the equivalent tax paid is reclaimed by the charity from HMRC. This year no Gift Aid was claimed, the Gift Aid on entries received will be claimed after the 12 September 2021 event.
