AMC/WAW AGM 2024: CROESO’R IS-LYWYDDION a CHYFLWYNIAD

Wel, noswaith dda.

Jenny Sabine ydw i, ac rydw i a’m Cyd-Is-lywydd Gail Allen, yn eich croesawu i gyd i 27ain Cyfarfod Blynyddol Cyffredinol Archif Menywod Cymru / Women’s Archive of Wales, ac yn cyflwyno’r Adroddiad Blynyddol i chi.

Rydw i’n siarad wrth gwrs unwaith eto, ar ran ein Llywydd, yr Athro Emerita Deirdre Beddoe, academydd adnabyddus ym maes hanes menywod, a ffrind mynwesol i lawer ohonom yma heno.

Mae 2023-24 wedi bod yn flwyddyn brysur i’n mudiad. Mae ein prosiect cyfredol Menywod a Chwaraeon: Cymru yn mynd rhagddo yn dda iawn.

Ym mis Mai 2023 cynhalion ni Ysgol Undydd lwyddiannus arall, y tro hwn ym Mhrifysgol De Cymru, Casnewydd. Mwynhaon ni gyflwyniadau ar amrywiaeth eang o fenywod sydd wedi gwneud cyfraniad i fywydau gwleidyddol a/neu gymdeithasol menywod yn yr ardal hon dros y 200 mlynedd ddiwethaf, ynghyd â thrafodaeth rhwng menywod sy wedi neu yn gwasanaethu yng Nghynulliad / Senedd Cymru yn y cyfnod diweddar.

Ym mis Medi dychwelodd y Gynhadledd Flynyddol i Sain Ffagan lle cawsom fwynhau cyfleusterau a chroeso cynnes iawn yr amgueddfa. Unwaith eto roedd y papurau o safon uchel ac aeth nifer ohonom ar daith gerdded ddiddorol o gwmpas gerddi’r Amgueddfa. Fel arfer roedd digonedd o amser i gymdeithasu, dal i fyny â hen ffrindiau a gwneud rhai newydd.

Menter newydd i’r Archif, a gynlluniwyd i gefnogi ymchwil lleol am fenywod yw ‘Darganfod Hanes Menywod yn ein Cymuned’, lle byddwn yn rhoi grantiau bach o hyd at £100 i grwpiau sy’n ymchwilio bywydau eu cyn-famau yn lleol.

3

Ym Mehefin 2024 fe ddathlon ni gyhoeddi’r llyfrau Setting the Record Straight / Gwir Gofnod o Gyfnod , y seiliedig ar y prosiect ymchwil blaenorol, i ddiogelu atgofion aelodau benywaidd y Senedd. Y golygyddion yw Kate Sullivan a Catrin Edwards. Mae Dr Chris Chapman, Catrin Stevens a Dr Sian Rhiannon Williams wedi cynrychioli AMC/WAW ar bwyllgor Hawlio Heddwch y Ddeiseb Heddwch, sy’n ymdrechu i drawsysgrifio ac ymchwilio'r 390,296 o lofnodion gan Gymraësau a gyflwynwyd i fenywod Unol Daleithiau America yn1923-24 i ofyn iddynt hyrwyddo byd di-ryfel. Mae llawer o aelodau’r Archif wedi helpu trawsysgrifio’r llofnodion ar y ddeiseb.

Mae aelodau’r pwyllgor wedi cydweithio â phrosiect y Placiau Porffor, prosiect Cymru-gyfan i godi placiau porffor er cof am fenywod eithriadol ledled y wlad. Yn drist, bu farw rhai o’n haelodau yn ystod y flwyddyn dan sylw. Un golled arbennig oedd Jen Wilson, pianydd Jazz talentog, ymchwilydd i hanes Jazz a sylfaenydd Jazz Heritage Wales. Anogodd Jen lawer o fenywod i ddysgu chwarae jazz, ac yn bwysicach fyth, i berfformio’n gyhoeddus. Roedd hi’n aelod hirhoedlog o’r Archif, a bu’n chwarae’r piano yn nifer o’n digwyddiadau cyhoeddus. Gwelir ei cholli yn fawr. Cyflwynaf yr awenau yn awr i’n Cadeirydd, Dr Mary Thorley.

Diolch yn fawr iawn,

AMC/WAW AGM 2024: VICE PRESIDENT’S WELCOME & INTRODUCTION

Good evening.

I’m Jenny Sabine, and I and my fellow Vice President Gail Allen, welcome you all to the 27[th] Annual General Meeting of Archif Menywod Cymru / Women’s Archive of Wales, and to introduce the Annual Report.

I am of course speaking once again on behalf of our President, Professor Emerita Deirdre Beddoe, a well-known academic of women’s history, and a very dear friend to many of us here tonight.

2023-24 has been a busy year for our organisation. Our current Heritage Lottery Fund-supported project ‘Women in Sport’, has been progressing apace. In May 2023 we held another successful Day School, this time in the University of South Wales in Newport. We enjoyed presentations on a varied mix of women who had made a contribution to the political and/or social lives of women in the area over the past 200 years, as well as a discussion with women who served in the Welsh Assembly / Senedd in recent times.

In September the Annual Conference returned to St Fagans where we enjoyed Amgueddfa Cymru’s excellent facilities and very warm welcome. Again the papers were of a high standard and a number of us were led on a fascinating tour of the museum’s grounds. As always there were plenty of opportunities to socialise, catch up with old friends and make new ones.

A new venture for the Archive, designed to support local research about women, is ‘Discovering Women’s History in Your Community’, in which we give small grants of up to £100 to groups to research the lives of their local foremothers.

5

In June 2024 we celebrated the publication of the book Setting the Record Straight / Gwir Gofnod o Gyfnod , based on the earlier research project of the same name, to collect the memories of female Senedd members. The editors are Catrin Edwards and Kate Sullivan.

Dr Chris Chapman, Catrin Stevens and Dr Sian Rhiannon Williams represented AMC/WAW on the committee of the Peace Petition project, which works to transcribe and research the 390,296 Welsh women who, in 1923-24, signed a petition to the women of the United States of America to work for a world free from wars. Many Archive members have helped with transcribing the signatures to the petition. Members of the committee have collaborated with the Purple Plaques project, an allWales project which works to erect purple plaques in memory of outstanding women all over the country.

Sadly, some of our members have died during the year under review. One particular loss is Jen Wilson, gifted jazz pianist, researcher into jazz history and founder of Jazz Heritage Wales. Jen encouraged many women to learn to play music and, crucially, to perform it in public. She was also a long-time member of the Archive and played piano at many of our social events. She is sadly missed.

I will now hand you over to our Chair, Dr Mary Thorley.

Thank you very much.

Placiau Porffor Cymru

Mae AMCWAW yn parhau i gadw cysylltiadau cryf â menter Placiau Porffor Cymru, ac rydym yn derbyn adroddiadau rheolaidd gan Sian Rhiannon Williams sydd ar eu pwyllgor. Mae aelodau’r Archif wedi cefnogi digwyddiadau yn ystod blwyddyn 2023-24 ac mae’r rhain wedi cynnwys dadorchuddio placiau i Annie Hughes Griffiths (Aberystwyth), Jemima Nicholas (Abergwaun) Frances Hoggan (Aberhonddu), Patti Flynn (Caerdydd) a Rose Davies (Aberdâr).

Jennifer Wilson

Gyda thristwch diffuant mae’n rhaid i ni gofnodi marwolaeth cefnogwraig arbennig yr Archif, Jennifer Wilson. Roedd Jen yn bianydd jazz adnabyddus ac yn ffurfio cyswllt gyda’r dyddiau cyn sylfaenu Archif Menywod Cymru. Roedd yn ffrind mynwesol i Ursula Masson a’i helpodd i sefydlu Treftadaeth Jazz Cymru.

Cofiwn amdani gyda chariad a diolch am ei chyfraniad i waith yr Archif.

Gwaith y Pwyllgor

Fel y gŵyr pawb, rwy’n siŵr, ni allai gwaith yr Archif gael ei gyflawni heb ymdrechion ein pwyllgor ymroddgar. Daw aelodau’r pwyllgor o bob rhan o’r wlad ac mae pob un ohonynt wedi ymroi i gadw a hyrwyddo hanes menywod yng Nghymru. Rydym yn cwrdd bob tua chwe wythnos fel pwyllgor llawn ond mae sawl is-bwyllgor hefyd yn ymwneud â phrosiectau penodol ac mae sawl un o’n haelodau yn mynychu cyfarfodydd sefydliadau eraill i gynrychioli AWCWAW. Hoffwn gymeradwyo yn arbennig waith diflino ein swyddogion a’n harweinwyr prosiectau. Mae’n siŵr y gallwch werthfawrogi lefel yr ymroddiad a’r gwaith caled sy’n mynd i mewn i drefnu digwyddiadau amrywiol a’r prosiectau yr ydym wedi eu dechrau neu yr ydym yn rhan ohonynt.

Hoffwn hefyd fynegi ein diolch ni i gyd i Dr Chris Chapman a oedd yn gadeirydd arnom tan fis Tachwedd 2023. Arweiniodd Chris ni trwy gyfnod anodd iawn epidemig COVID. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwnnw wnaeth gwaith yr Archif ddim colli momentwm, yn wir dechreuwyd ar sawl menter newydd. Mae Chris yn parhau yn aelod gweithredol o’r Pwyllgor ac rydym yn ddiolchgar iawn am y cyfan a gyflawnwyd ganddi yn ystod ei chyfnod yn y Gadair.

Chair’s report from April 2023 to April 2024.

It has been an honour and a pleasure to be the Chair of Archif Menywod Cymru/Women’s Archive Wales (AMC/WAW) since November 2023. This report covers the period from April 2023 to April 2024 and Chris Chapman was Chair for part of that time. I am very grateful to Chris, the Office Holders, and the Committee members for all the support I have received during the past, very busy, year.

Menywod a Chwaraeon: Cymru Women and Sport: Wales

In the Autumn of 2023, AMCWAW was given a substantial grant by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to undertake a project recording the history of Women and Sport in Wales. We are greatly indebted to Catrin Stevens for all her work on the application and for being the driving force and inspiration of the resulting project. The project has three strands:

  1. To record on film the histories of 60 former sportswomen from a wide range of sports who have represented Wales/Britain. Catrin Edwards and Tash Horton have been engaged to undertake this part of the work. Many interviews have already taken place and extracts from them can be seen on our website.

  2. To compile and write the biographies of 30 former sportswomen who have now died. Members of the Project’s Management Group have been busy researching this information.

3.To collect, scan and catalogue photographs and documents associated with communal, school, college and other teams to be placed on the People’s Collection Wales’ website.

Catrin Edwards and Tash Horton have been appointed by the Archive to conduct and film interviews on behalf of the project and by the end of March, a number of these had already been undertaken. Excerpts of these interviews are to be found on the AMCWAW website.

th Newport Day School, 11 May 2023

This event, our second Day School, was held at the University of South Wales, Newport, and was entitled Setting the Record Straight: Discovering the History and Heritage of Women in South- East Wales. The programme focussed largely on the history of women in that part of Wales from the nineteenth to twenty first centuries. There were presentations throughout the day and there was also a walk at lunch time to see the murals in St Paul’s Square commemorating women. This was a very varied and lively day which was enjoyed by presenters and attendees. We would like to thank the University sincerely for their generous support.

The National Eisteddfod 2023

The Llŷn and Eifionydd Eisteddfod at Boduan, Gwynedd, hosted the Women’s Archive Wales annual lecture in Societies’ Tent 2 on the afternoon of Friday11th August. The presentation was entitled Recollections and Archives: the remarkable lives and contributions of Margaret Lloyd George and Ceridwen Peris . The speakers were Elizabeth George and Shan Robinson, and the capacity audience was a testament to the excellent speakers and their fascinating material.

Annual Conference October 2023

Our twenty-sixth Annual Conference was held in St Fagans National Museum of History in October 2023. We are very grateful to Mared McAleavy, one of our committee members and a staff member at the museum, for all her efforts with the organisation of this event and for the warm welcome that we received. The occasion attracted c 100 delegates who had the opportunity to listen to a range of topics focussed on the history of women in Wales. A wide variety of subjects were covered, and the two days featured a full and fascinating programme. Rhys Peregrine was the winner of the Avril Rolph bursary award for his excellent paper discussing how the classic Hollywood film How Green Was My Valley might have been received by Welsh women cinemagoers. The full conference programme can still be accessed on our website.

Celebrating International Women’s Day with Women’s Heritage Walks.

This year, as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations on March 8[th] , it was decided to organise a series of Heritage Walks at a wide range of venues throughout the country. Although the weather was atrocious on the 8[th] , several successful walks went ahead. They were well supported and led by members of the Archive. This has been one of our most successful projects and copies of the guidebooks for each of the walks are to be found on our website. We hope to add to their number in future years.

Sylvia Mason leading the Newport walk.

Discovering Women’s History in Your Community

In her time as chair, Chris Chapman instigated the project Discovering Women’s History in Your Community . This initiative offers small grants to local groups who want to explore the history of women in their locality and would benefit from a financial grant to get their projects underway. A very exciting project is underway in Brecon and the Archive has been delighted to have contributed to its work.

Archif Wleidyddol Gymreig/ Welsh Political Archive

The Welsh Political Archive was set up in 1983 and is a dedicated programme within the National Library of Wales to collect, store, catalogue and promote archival material which reflects the political life of Wales. AMC/WAW has been represented since 2020 on its Advisory Committee which meet every year. In 2023 the annual meeting held in the BBC Studios in Cardiff and Chris Chapman, herself a former AM, is our representative on the Advisory Committee of this body. Our last major project ‘Setting the Record Straight/Gwir Gofnod o Gyfnod’ has made a major contribution to this archive as women’s records were, prior to our project, underrepresented.

15

A book celebrating Setting the Record Straight/Gwir Gofnod o Gyfnod was published by Honno Press in 2024.

Ursula Masson Memorial Lecture

This year’s Ursula Masson Memorial Lecture, at the Treforest Campus of the University of South Wales, was held on March 8th, International Women’s Day 2024.Ursula Masson was one of the founders of the Women’s Archive and the ethos and work of the Archive builds on the inspiration of Ursula and her fellow founder members. The speaker this year was Dr. Stephanie Ward of Cardiff University, and her excellent lecture was entitled Political Women in Inter-War Wales. The lives of some outstanding individuals were highlighted as was the work of women in the Labour Party and Trade Unions . Dr. Ward’s talk focussed on the many women who ‘quietly’ took part in political and associational life after the First World War. This ‘rich associational life’ paved the way for women’s entry into public and professional roles in society. One of Dr. Ward’s specialisms is the interaction of the citizen and the state and her deep understanding of this subject in relation to the women of Wales was evident in this engrossing talk. Many thanks to Dr. Ward and to the University of South Wales.

Zoom lectures 2023-4

This was our fourth series of lectures held via ZOOM over the winter months and have proved to be very successful. Many thanks to Caroline Fairclough for organising this excellent programme. We are always very grateful to our speakers for their support.

The Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative

Every year, AMCWAW sponsors a prize in conjunction with the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative Awards. The Initiative aims to encourage young people, of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, to take a greater interest in their Welsh heritage. In 2023, the winner of the prize sponsored by the Archive, was Ysgol Gyfun Bro Edern , Cardiff for their project entitled Hanes Tywyll Caerdydd – The Dark History of Cardiff . Pupils investigated the history of crime and punishment in the Cardiff area and considered the changes in the nature of crimes and of punishments over the last millennium, focussing on the last 150 years in particular and on the experiences of women. Pupils used a wide range of evidence and worked both collaboratively and independently, thus fulfilling several aims of the new curriculum. We are delighted to be able to sponsor an award every year, particularly any project which has a focus on the history of women.

Welsh Women’s Peace Petition 1924 Commemorations

AMCWAW has taken great interest in, and been closely involved with, the project which celebrates the history of women in Wales. Chris Chapman and Catrin Stevens have both served on the main committee of the Peace Petition Partnership over the last two years and the group secured funding to return the Petition from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington to Wales. Since then, it has been on display in Aberystwyth and Cardiff and many thousands of the signatures have been transcribed and are available to view online.

Sian Rhiannon Williams and Catrin Stevens have also represented us on the Research Group and contributed to the book about the Peace Petition which was published in 2023.

Purple Plaques Wales

AMCWAW continues to maintain strong links with the Purple Plaques Wales initiative, and we regularly receive reports from Sian Rhiannon Williams who is on their committee. Archive members have supported events during the year 2023-2024 and these have included the unveiling of plaques to Annie Hughes Griffiths (Aberystwyth), Jemima Nicholas (Fishguard) Frances Hoggan (Brecon), Patti Flynn (Cardiff) and Rose Davies (Aberdare).

Jennifer Wilson

It is with deep sadness that we must report the death of a great supporter of the Archive, Jennifer Wilson. Jen was a renowned jazz pianist, and she formed a link with the days before the formation of Women’s Archive Wales . She was a close friend of Ursula Masson who helped her to establish Jazz Heritage Wales .

We remember her with love and gratitude for her contribution to the work of the Archive.

The Work of the Committee

As I am sure everyone is aware, the work of the Archive could not be achieved without the efforts of our dedicated committee. The committee is made up of members from all over the country and every one of them is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the history of the women of Wales. We meet every six weeks or so as a full committee but there are also frequent sub-committees related to specific projects and several of our members attend the meetings of other organisations to represent AMCWAW. I would like to particularly commend to you the tireless work of our officers and project leaders. I am sure you can appreciate the level of commitment and hard work that goes into the organisation of various events and the projects which we have initiated or are part of.

I also wish to express the thanks of us all to Dr Chris Chapman who was our chair until November 2023. Chris led us through the very difficult time around the COVID epidemic. During that time, the work of the Archive did not lose any momentum, indeed, several new projects were initiated. Chris continues to be a very active member of the Committee and we are very grateful for all she achieved during her time as Chair.

I am pleased to be able to present my second Treasurer’s Annual Report to you. I am grateful to Carmarthen based Accounts, Clay Shaw Butler, for auditing the accounts for us. I would also like to thank the Committee and WAW/AMC members for their support in making my role an easy and enjoyable one.

As you can see, we have a healthy bank balance. The Unrestricted Funds, which support administration of our charity, came largely from membership subscriptions. Gift Aid is also important, and I would ask anyone who hasn’t signed up to this, and is able to, to please contact us.

During the year, money has been spent in support of WAW/AMC Projects; an award was made from the Avril Rolph Memorial Fund and a contribution made towards the Ursula Masson Memorial lecture.

Monies for the World War 1 Project and the Setting the Record Straight Project have now been spent in full and these two Restricted Funds have now closed. We have received the first proportion of the National Lottery Grant for the Welsh Women in Sport Project, and this Project is well underway with a good budget. I would particularly like to thank Catrin Stevens for all her expertise and administrative work regarding the Lottery Grant.

Adroddiad y Swyddog Casgliadau Ebrill 2023 – Mawrth 2024

Mae darganfod a hyrwyddo rhoi cofnodion yn ymwneud â hanes menywod ar adnau yn parhau yn nod allweddol i Archif Menywod Cymru. Mae Archif Menywod Cymru yn croesawu pan fydd pobl yn cysylltu ynglŷn â thrafod rhoi eu casgliadau ar adnau. Gall y rhain rychwantu o gofnodion personol i eiddo sefydliadau. Nid ydym yn storio cofnodion ffisegol ein hunain ond yn annog pobl i roi eu cofnodion i wasanaethau Archifol ar draws Cymru. Rydym yn cynorthwyo i sicrhau eu bod mewn cyswllt â’r gwasanaeth perthnasol a fydd wedyn yn darparu cyngor ynglŷn â rhoi’r deunydd ar adnau.

Yn ystod y flwyddyn mae AMC/WAW wedi ymateb i amrywiaeth o gwestiynau ymchwil gan bobl sy’n chwilio am ffynonellau ar gyfer eu hymchwil, er enghraifft, am gyfraniadau menywod i’r Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf, gorymdaith 1981 o Gaerdydd i Freudeth, triniaeth menywod mewn sefydliadau iechyd meddwl yng Nghymru a LHDTAQ+ a hanes, gwleidyddiaeth a diwylliant yn y Deyrnas Gyfunol. Derbyniwyd ymholiadau am hanes teulu yn ogystal, yn aml yn sgil un o brosiectau AMC/WAW, megis Lleisiau o Lawr y Ffatri. Rydym bob amser yn ceisio cyfarwyddo ymchwilwyr i ddeunyddiau yn y gwasanaethau Archifol a roddwyd ar adnau dan enw AMC/WAW lle mae’n bosibl, ond os na, yn fwy cyffredinol i ffynonellau eraill a all fod yn berthnasol i’w hymchwil. Derbynnir ceisiadau am ffotograffau hefyd e.e. ar gyfer llyfrau testun ysgolion ac arddangosfeydd.

Gellir gweld oriel o rai o’n casgliadau ar ein gwefan: - https://www.archifmenywodcymru.org/cym/ein casgliadau

Collections Officer Report April 2023 - March 2024

Uncovering and promoting the deposit of records relating to women’s history remains a key aim of Women’s Archive Wales. Women’s Archive Wales welcomes being contacted by people regarding the possible deposit of their collections. These can range from personal records to those of organisations. We do not store physical records ourselves but encourage people to deposit their records in Archive services across Wales. We help to ensure they are put in contact with the appropriate service who will then provide advice regarding the possible deposit of the material.

During the year AMC/WAW has responded to a variety of research queries from people seeking sources for research, for example, into Welsh women and their contribution to World War 1, the 1981 march from Cardiff to Brawdy, the treatment of women in mental health institutions in Wales and for LGBTQIA+ history, politics and culture in the UK. Family history enquiries have also been received, often as a result of one of AMC/WAW projects, such as Voices from the Factory Floor. We always endeavour to point researchers to material in the Archive services deposited under AMC/WAW where it exists but if not, more generally to sources they may find relevant to their research. Requests to use photographs have also received, for example for a school textbook and in exhibitions.
