The Objects of Wales Wild Land Foundation CIO are
To promote the conservation. protection and improvement of the physi¢al and natural
environment by promoting blological diversity. for the benefit of the public.
To advance the education of the publlc in the cons8rvation. proteclion and imkYov&mtnt of
the physical and natural environmenl, and deepen thelr connectlon and appreci8tk)n of IL
Actlvltles for tlje year 2022-2023
The activities of the charity were directed exclusfvly towards delivering our obJectNe6 on th6 laThJ at
Bwlch Corog. Glaspwll, nr Machynlleth.
The main alms for the year were." to wease n8tive woodland cover across tho Bwlch Corog site;
restore conifer woodland to natNe speues; to restore Ihe blanket bog and heathland habitats; to restore
missing native fauna and flora., to enable publiG access., 8nd lo enable education. nature Gonnection.
and wellbeing for a wide range of people, espéclally those wth limited access to nature.
Govemance
No trustee5 resigned during the year. Simon Ayres became a tnjstee on DeGember 2022 at the AGM.
Three sub-groups continued to meet regulady and report to the Board. Flnance and Gov8Tnance'. Land
Management., EduGalion and Community. A schedule of delegats.on lo the Director was in place. No
trustee recruitmenl took pla￿.
strategy and Dovelopmenl
The prirnary goals for the year were to continue to deliver exisling programmes while seeking urgently
to secure funds for the following years. In addltlon. the former Director planned to step down and so
search for his rePl8￿ment was required. The new Director, Katy Harris. started work in Novemter
2022.
Fundlng
Income from the Sustalnable Management Scheme finished in the previous financial year- this had
prowded almost all the project fundlng for three years. For muth of 2022-23. the charity drew on its
reserves to SUPkN)rt the operational costs. The trustees decided to use same of these to create a
pemianent fundraising post in August 2023. The Fundralsing Manager started work in OGlober 2023.
By March 2023. we had secured sufficient fijnds to deliver 311 our projeotairns for 2022-5 including the
creatlon of a new Habitat and Sp8cies Manager post.
Reserves
The trustèes noted the ne9d to incr8ase reserves again. Trustees have committed Io aknlng for a
mlnimum of 6 month$ 8nd 8 maximum of 12 months reserves. A plan lo r8bulbJ and maintsin th8
reserve 1$ being drafted.

Land
Woodland and woodpastura
Tree planting and f8n¢ing was ¢arri8d out over the winter as part of a scheme managed by NoTih
Wales Wildlife Trust. 519 trees were plantsd in bracken within a newly fènced area next to existing
woodland. where nalural regenerallon Ss also expected. 225 trees were p18nt8d in cactus guards
(spiked metal mesh cylinders) as single trees in suitable places across open land. 94 trees were
planted in group5 Wth no fencing or guards in places consid8red unlikely lo be browsed.
The larch plantation was thlnned and high pruned accordlng to schedule lo encourage the growth of
native trees and woodland ground flor8, The larch timber was cut ar￿ Split to store for us8 as firewood
for the campfires.
P9alland Restoration
Monitoring was Carried out on th8 trial intèrventlon sUPPOrted by th8 National Pealland Adion
Progr8mme. Flat aTe85 dominated by purple moor grass were scraped off d¢)wn to the soil. Some
areas were planted wilh sphagnum moss plugs. The initial response in some areas was a growth of
rushes on the exposed peaty soil. other areas had growih of grass and sedge species otherth8n purplg
mrxsr grass., other areas, particularly those that remained waterlogged for most of the lime and are
sItU8ted on deep peat, had more success wilh 88t8blishment of sphagnum moss. There was about
500k SUNNal of sphagnum plugs.
Trails wwe cut durlng the autumn, following the bridleway and the circuit around the upland area.
Where trails were cut prevlously. a more divèrse sward developed. and the animals ￿ntinUe to graze.
Thi$ response was developed this year by cutting an exparimental area next lo a scraped a￿, so that
long term oul¢omes of treatments Can be compared.
Grazing
Grazing ty horses and Gattle is the main proc8s$ contributlng to the resloration of the dwarf shrub
vegetats'on of upland healhland, for exampl8 heather species and bilberry, along With the diverse
mosses and flowers of an upland heath. Areas of a¢id grassland have been favoured by the herbivores
and have been restored lo diverse pastures rlch in flowering Species.
The semi-wild h8rd of Konik horses had thr88 foals during the spring of 2022. Howeverthe h￿SeS did
less well over the winter. so we have formu18ted a plan to replace them with a br88d better suited to
the lerrain. For a Ihird year, a herd of Highland cattle were brought over from the neighbouring farm
for the period 1 July to 30 Septernber. This year th8 number of cattle was up from 12 to 19.
Bracken manag8menl
Bracken was cleared in the paths and camping areas, and around young trees.
Volunteers
11 land restoratlon volunteering days were held at B￿ch Corog. led by staff. 37 indsvidu81 volunteers
over the cour6e of the yèar resulting in 570 volunleer hours. Activities included tree planting. bracken
slashing, movlng timber, flora. and bird surveys, collecting. and distributing nalwe tree seeds.
Our volunteers Ylcluded local people and a régular group of asylum se8k8rs and refugees from
Wolverhampton City of SanGtuary

Discussions were held with the owners of tour neighbouring propertles, and it was agreed to have
further talks about fomiin9 a landscape partnership. Funding to support thls ￿￿[k was agreed by
Esmee Fairbaim Foundation. The activitie$ of this group in pra¢tice depends on whal can be agreed
and the conditions and Ir￿ntIVeS of govemment 5UPPOrt mechanisms.
We also maintained contacl with Ttr Canol. a regional nature partnership.
Woodland Trust partnershlp
The charity continues to work in partnership with our landlords, Coed Cadw (The Wcodland Trusl).
through joint meetings held every 6 months, and through hosting slte vlsits for Woodland Trust
personnel.
Educatlon and wgllbolrYJ programm•s
Prlmary schools
Groups of children from local primary schools visit the sRe as part of 8 three-year programme. The
charity worked with the followir#J schools: Talybont., Pennal., Dyffryn Dulas {Corris)', Dafydd Lwd
INwrtown}' Rhydypennau (Bow Street): Comins Coch. Bro Hyddgen (Machynlleth).
This year the children reported enjoying the followlng acttvities..
Art and nature: Wild living skill$', Making animal homes; Making maTrJala$ from matetials foraged on
site., Leaming about the Celts'c Rainforest,. Oak tree days.
Youth Gamps
The youth camps are led by loGal conlraclor Jane Robertson. who has 6xcellant experience of leading
teenagers on camps and nature activllles. The aGtivities include fire making. foraging, filleting fish.
spoon GaNing, mindfulness. nature awareness, slnging, river walking, $￿epIng out in lh8 open and
much more. Feedback is Gonsistently very positive, and it is a powerful experien￿ for many of the
partlcipants.

9 teenage asylum seekers with Cardiff City of Sanctuary.
Tiny Tols Wild Days Oul
This new program made a start In March 2023. Pre-school age Children Bttended slruclured days out
on site accompanled by a parent or olher relative or guardian. The activities include storytelllng, arL
craft5. and exploring the site. Funded by Iha Powys Chlldcare Development Fund.
Hafo Hwyl Summer ofFun
A summer hollday programme of 3 nature aclivity $88S￿nS. funded by Welsh Government for 8
teenagers.

Open Day
The annual open day for the project took placA in May 2022. on site at BvAth Corog.

The annual tre8 dresslng day was held during National Tree Week In December 2022, on site at Bwlch
Corog.

Several third-party events also took place on site. generdtlng 8 small income for Coetir Anian.
Monltoring and Impact
Two evaluation reports by external consultants were presènted as part of the monitorfng and evaluation
at Ihe end of Ihe Sustalnable Management Scheme projed..
Ecological Evaluation by Mick Green in August 2022- and
Soci81 Evaluadon by Arwel Jones in October 2022.
Both reports provide a very positive refiection on Ihe actlvltles undertaken during th8 threpryear project
and demonstrate clear benefits and measurable changes.
Spatial dats was mapp&d and presented as part of reporting on the SMS project.
Young Iree regeneration was mapped, wlth species and defflslues noted.

and securing income to manage the land and run projec15 lo restore natural habitats and wildlife.

Governancè
As a Board of Truste8s. w8 are bound by thè Conslltutlon last amended 15 July 2014. Thls Is available
sh)uld anyone requesl it. All major d8cisions a￿ made by our Boaid of Tru5tses. The perKJd of office
of the initial Truste8s on r8gistration was for a minimum period of 2 years, 3 years and 4 years. All
subsequent trustees must be appoinl8d on a minimum tenn of three years by a ￿$olUtIOn passed at
a propedy convened meeting of the trustees. Trustees are appoinled 8ccording to their relevant
qualification and experien￿. Trust8es MLJSI be willing lo undèrtake training in order to understand the
charity's opèrations and to keep up lo date with r8l&vant changes in regulations.
Trustee inductlon and tralning
The Charlty provides an induction program for all new Trustees to fulty equip Ih8m wth the infornia￿n
and knowledge which they need to enable them to become effective Board members as quickly as
possible. They are gNen all the Chanty's key documents, including current ver8ion of the
constilution, CIO'S Latest Trustees Report and accL)unt$. In addition the Charity provides ICTTraining
to all new Trustsés.

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees, Annual Report and Ihe financial staternents

The law applicable to charities in England & Wales requires the trustees to prepare linancial statements
for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the stale of affairs of the charity and of Ihe
incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that period.
