ST MARY’S CHURCH APCM 2024

Opening Report from Rev Simon Mason

The content of this report mainly takes the form of a vote of thanks. This goes to all those who both lead and take part in the life of our church family life and all the activities involved. To our Wardens, Deputy Wardens and Church Council I am most grateful. As we continue to move into exciting times, each one makes a vital contribution to the life we are celebrating.

To our ministers, ordained and lay, we also express our deep gratitude. There is a vibrancy to our worship and prayer life which God is blessing and we are grateful to Him and to them. Thank you to Mark our curate for his ongoing support and wisdom in ministry, and to Josh our Children, Youth and Families Worker who has a deep involvement with wide ranging groups in our church setting, in schools and across the wider community.

As well as excitement, we also face challenges. In common with most church buildings, there is the challenge of fabric issues but again we are looking with hope to resolve these and create a worship space and facility for the future. As we move through the coming year, as well as reflecting on the year gone by, we do so with a keen focus on prayer: waiting on God for his leading and direction as well as his provision in every way.

Thank you to each member of our church family for the love and support shown in the wonderful work being done.

With every blessing

Rev Canon Simon Mason

Rector of Newent

FI NANCIAL REPORT

a) PRESENTATION OF ACCOUNTS

Financial reports were available to members. Nigel Gabb gave an outline of our current finances. Our general giving has increased and restricted funda are up. We hold over £24,000 for the Lord’s Larder. The loan we had from the diocese has now been repaid in full.

Members accepted the financial report. Simon thanked Shirley Howard, our Treasurer, for all her work on the accounts.

b) APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER

Mrs Christine Moore is our new Independent Examiner. Member agreed with this choice.

REPORTS

Roger read out the Wardens’ report, and thanked Simon for all he does.

Josh’s report on CYPS (children, young people and students) was read by Kate Blethyn in his absence - a comprehensive report on all he has been doing over the last year. Members acknowledged all his work with young people in the area.

Simon mentioned Parish Share - the current system is under review. A new system will be in place by the autumn which will be rolled out at the end of the year.

Sue Cook gave the Mothers’ Union report. In 2023 there were 8 new members and a further 3 new members this year. Sue outlined all the meetings throughout the past year. A recent Coffee Morning raised £214.60 to be shared between MU funds and St Mary’s.

Simon outlined the work being done to update our Outward Giving each month.

We have had 17 baptisms over recent times with the families concerned wishing to be involved at St Mary’s. The Prayer Ministry Team recently went to Harnhill, Cirencester.

Simon spoke about re-introducing “Supper Club” - having a shared meal and fellowship at various venues. He thinks we should find a new name for the venture.

He gave thanks to the LMT. We are looking to have a second curate. Simon thanked Mark Dunning, our curate, for all he does at St Mary’s, and thanked Ros Greenhalgh and all our supplementary ministers for their work.

AOB

Nigel Gabb asked whether we could go back to using an overhead projector, as we have a shortage of hymn books. Simon said we would look for an updated system, as the “SongPro” system we previously had was quite complicated to use.

Nigel also asked when we could go back to using the altar rail for Holy Communion.

The meeting closed at 9.10pm with prayer.
