Summary of main activities:
Gardening
Gardening over winter generally scales down. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 we had to put a pause on the regular gardening sessions we were running in late 2019. COVID-19 brought a change to the garden in that the local community began to use the gardens to relax and enjoy. Once it was summer and rules were relaxed we found ourselves with a newly engaged community that wanted to get Events Unfortunately were unable to host any events – due to the pandemic. When rules were relaxed we continued to run our monthly gardening sessions but these were a drop-in event that were necessary in the upkeep of the gardens and for community engagement.
Adopt a bed scheme As our community engagement increased over lockdown we decided to take our adopt a bed scheme out of pilot and assigned community members a bed of their own. This has been hugely sucessful as the community feels like they have a part of the garden of their own, in exchange they look after the rest of the garden. This has maintained a buzz in the community, with people building friendships through visiting the gardens and looking after their beds. Engagement Strategy
Our engagement strategy evolved with COVID-19 and we set up a WhatsApp community group for anyone to join. In the WhatsApp group we post about our gardening sessions and any news regarding the beds or gardens. We also assigned one of the trustees to maintain our Instagram (@_abbeygardens) to further our reach and engagement.
New planting Beds
With the finding of Newham Council for Pocket Parks grant the planters were completed in September 2020.
Pilot: Garden café
Unfortunately due to COVID-19 we were unable to get the Garden Café started.
Sumary of main achievements:
In 2020 the garden took on a new lease of life with an engaged community that needed the space during the COVID-19 pandemic. When rules began to relax we were able to build this new community through regular gardening sessions, an active WhatsApp group and Instagram. We appointed new trustees in the July 2020.
