Objectives for the public benefit
The charitable objects of the CIO are:
- 1) To promote sustainable development for the benefit of the public by:
a) the preservation, conservation and the protection of the environment and the prudent use of resources;
b) the relief of poverty and the improvement of the conditions of life in socially and economically disadvantaged communities;
c) the promotion of sustainable means of achieving economic growth and regeneration.
2) To advance the education of the public in subjects relating to sustainable development and the protection, enhancement and rehabilitation of the environment and to promote study and research in such subjects provided that the useful results of such study are disseminated to the public at large.
Note that “sustainable development” means “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
PaganAid fulfils its charitable objectives by raising funds from the public and making grants to suitable projects.
Grant making policy
We will fund projects that help people living in poverty to improve their lives and the environment through living in greater harmony with the natural world. This might involve providing technical or legal support, as well as training and investing in community enterprises. We don’t give hand-outs, but give people a leg up to a better life. Our funds can be a catalyst for change, but it is the communities themselves who will do most of the work.
We will work in partnership with other trusted and experienced organisations who have direct contact with the community projects and who will coordinate and monitor the spending. In this way, we don’t duplicate what already exists and can ensure that our administrative costs and carbon footprint is as low as possible.
We will support communities of any or no faith, providing that they want to live in greater harmony with the natural world. We will not seek to promote pagan religious beliefs through our projects. We will never discriminate on the grounds of religion, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation or (dis)ability.
We encourage our members to suggest suitable projects and fundraise for these once agreed by the Board.

Activities during the year
Membership
PaganAid commenced a membership scheme in 2018. The aim of the scheme was to encourage small regular, either annual or monthly, donations that cover the running costs of the charity. In return members are encouraged to suggest projects for the charity to raise funds for and they receive an email newsletter. At the 30/6/21 there were 22 members.
Fundraising
PaganAid has received donations from individual supporters and from sympathetic organisations. The trustees wish to express our profound thanks to all who have given us support. We have also expanded our fundraising activities to include merchandise, partner businesses who donate a percentage of their profits and an annual auction of items donated by the community.
Grants
We ran three fundraising campaigns during 2020/2021:
UK Community Foundations
Our autumn appeal was for money to support the covid work being done in local communities struggling in the wake of the Covid pandemic. PaganAid gave £500 to the UK Community Foundations who are coordinating this support to communities across the UK. Typically, they provide small amounts of funding to tiny community groups to help them survive and grow.
Amazon Conservation
The current deforestation level of the Amazon is estimated to be 17 percent, and its tipping point at 20-25 percent. If the tipping point is surpassed, the largest rainforest on Earth could become—at best—a dry grassland. Pagan Aid has made a £98.96 donation to Amazon Conservation.
Bees for Development
Bees are essential for the survival of all life on earth. Bees for Development help people out of poverty by providing them with bee keeping equipment and teaching them to keep bees. PaganAid will be donating £1200 to Bees for Development.
Organisational Development
We have continued the recruitment of new trustees. We have also started recruiting new volunteers.
Furthermore, we have started using Virgin Money giving, AmazonSmile and Redbubble as alternative income streams.
We have made the decision to run 4 campaigns a year from now on, focused on the elements of air, water, earth and fire. As well as fundraising, these campaigns will now also include education and resources. Our Bee campaign (air) was the first campaign to use this model and was very successful.
