Chairs Report 2020-2021

2020-21 was expected to be the year to focus on our build project. We had been successful with our fund raising and were expecting to raise the last block of funds before we started. Then COVID hit……

We were extremely fortunate to have Runnymede Council step in and enable us to start the build. Work commenced on the 9/11/2020 with a 9month timespan. The build was managed by our builders, Ascot Build and Design, our architects Robert Davies John West, and the build sub-committee from the canoe club. Over the project lifecycle we had a constant battle with costs as materials availability. We made regular reviews of the build to keep costs within budget and some tasks were taken on board by club members to save money. This ensured that the build came in on time and on budget.

During Covid we had to adapt to ever changing restrictions: risk assessments, rules and safety precautions were constantly changing. We were grateful for the support of our coaches for persevering and keeping people active, engaged and on the water when possible.

During Lockdowns, the racing coaches engaged with racing paddlers with gym sessions on Zoom to try and keep their core strength intact!

During the times of ‘rule of six’, paddlers were going out as much as possible, new initiatives were found to organise activities, Doodle Poll became our new Club paddle sign up system. It was so hard to deliver sessions for people without their own boats and every time we came up with a new solution it seemed we had a different government restriction or lockdown in place.

Running a club and this build on Zoom with limited face to face meetings has been such a challenge, especially a club like ours, we like to meet and discuss things! Our strength is our inclusive, friendly approach and the desire and commitment of paddlers to pass on their skills and experience to others.

We are now through the worst of the COVID restrictions, and we are now able to get our members and volunteers back on the water running sessions and involving the community. Waiting lists are full and we are running as many sessions as we can. Our members were incredibly supportive through these difficult times, storing equipment, paying membership fees, and giving donations to keep the club on its feet. This shows the level of support that our members are committed to give, even when things are tough.
