Structure, Governance & Management
Shanthi Vihara & Meditation Centre (“Vihara”) is governed by its Constitution. Trustees are elected in a biennial General Meeting, and each has a biennial tenure. All registered members of the Vihara are invited to the aforementioned General Meeting, and, inter alia , elect the Trustees. Trustees are not paid and there are no other paid workers - the Vihara being totally reliant on volunteers. The Trustees meet regularly to plan events and to oversee the running of the Vihara.
The Principal Aims and Objectives
-
a) to promote the study of, and to profoundly reflect on, Buddha’s teachings and to raise awareness and understanding of the principles of Buddhist philosophy and ethics amongst both professing Buddhists as well as other members of the General Public who wish to pursue an interest in such matters.
-
b) to facilitate the conduct of regular acts of Buddhist devotional practices.
-
c) to be a place where guided mindfulness-meditation is taught and practised.
-
d) to introduce and advance the level of public awareness of Buddhist history, art, sculpture, culture, festivals and tradition.
-
e) to strive to promote greater understanding and integration within the local and regional communities, of which the Vihara and its members constitute an integral part.
-
f) in keeping with the Buddhist principles & compassion for all sentient beings, to work both locally and internationally for the alleviation, to the highest practicable extent, of suffering, disadvantage and deprivation arising from social and/or economic circumstances or resulting from natural or man-made disasters.
Activities and Main Achievements
Trustees are continuing with their aspirations in selling the current premises and replacing it with a more suitable property.
As in previous years, the Vihara was able to mark the notable religious occasions in the Buddhist calendar - such as Vesak (May full moon day marking Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and the death), Poson (June full moon day marking the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka) and Katina (marking the traditional end of the rainy season retreat), as well as marking the Sinhalese & Tamil New Year celebration in April.
Religious observations, sermons and meditation sessions were carried out every Saturday after the monthly full moon days.
During the year weekly sessions of meditation and discussions in English of Buddhist discourses were conducted, with regular participants & led by the Chief Incumbent monk. Monthly open sessions of mindfulness mediation, organised by Doctors at Grantham Hospital and conducted by the Chief Incumbent Monk, were also held at the said Hospital, with participants from within & without the hospital.
Sunday schools for children were conducted weekly in Sheffield and Nottingham. Enhanced DBS checks & validations for all Sunday School lay teachers and clergy, 11 in total, were carried out during the year.
By invitation, monks visited schools for meetings with junior and senior students, for introductory Buddhism, introductory meditation, religious discussions and Question & Answers.
By invitation again, they continued to visit University of Derby for monthly meditation sessions attended by both students and staff.
Monks have continued to provide spiritual guidance and advice to the temples/Viharas in Middlesborough and Hull, as well as supplementing the presence of monks as and when needed by those two places.
While monks chant daily for the welfare of all living beings, they also performed specific chanting & blessings for those who visited the Vihara on their special occasions, such as commencement of schooling, University Entrance, examinations, employment, business, anniversaries and other special occasions.
Monks visited the homes of those devotees who wished to mark, especially death, anniversaries at home, as well as visiting homes and hospitals to offer blessings, psychological & spiritual support for those who were critically ill. Additionally, monks
performed religious rites to those who were on death bed and were present at funerals to conduct Buddhist religious rites.
