Present: Karen, Tony, Sarah, Derek, Linda, Valerie, Jan, Valerie, Vickie, Anne, Barbara, Bill,

Deborah (minute-taker), Glen.

Apologies: Tracy, Sharon, Lorraine, Jenny, Roz, Penny, Jutta.

Glen thanked everyone for attending and opened the meeting with a prayer.

It was agreed that it was lovely to see Anne back at the shop following the loss of her husband.

It was noted that Jenny recently returned to the shop as a volunteer and a new volunteer, Barbara, was welcomed in her absence.

Glen reminded all present of the financial gifts given in July/August/September to the Foodbank, Helston Methodist Church, Pakistan Floods Appeal (Glen, is this correct?), Barnabas Funds and Porthleven School.

£13,000 was the current balance in the Bank, with £4-5,000 being available to gift for Christmas. Also, since the last meeting, we have donated £200 to the Treliske Hospital for their games room.

Karen informed us that a film company had approached the shop asking to purchase items for half price for their filming period, if they were to return the items afterwards. The request was declined as our prices are always very low anyway. They did purchase some items, such as games and books (it was later established that they were filming on behalf of a children’s charity) but made no returns as far as anyone is aware.

Karen reminded all that no business cards should be displayed in the shop window, as displaying one would encourage others.

The Methodist Church have announced the renewal of their Christmas Tree Festival on 10[th] /11[th] December. Profits will go to the Church and to a Children’s Hospice. Anyone wishing to help decorate a tree should contact Karen please. Last time, in 2019, the shop decorated a tree with snowflakes, listing all those we had gifted to that year.

Glen presented a poster for the Helston Ice Rink in Water-ma-Trout from Friday 18[th] November for a week, with a theme of Narnia. It will be free entry but booking is recommended.

It was noted that there is a gap in the ceiling of the shop by the door which is ensuring that any water ingress is kept to the front of the shop. The landlord is being kept informed. The door is also sticking against the ceiling as it opens, but this is okay and not an issue at the moment.

Tony reminded all that any electrical item must have a CE approved sticker attached to ensure it has been checked, otherwise we should not sell it.

The Facebook posts are proving helpful still with ‘followers’ and ‘sharers’ increasing in number. Anyone using Facebook is encouraged to like and follow our posts. It was agreed that a list of scheduled posts would be available to all in the shop so that all are aware of the items being advertised. If anything is sold following a post on FB, then it is helpful to know so it can then be updated.

It was noted that anyone searching for the Cellar Charity Shop on Google can sometimes be directed to an older version of Facebook, with out of date opening hours. This will be looked into.

Glen reminded all of those we gave gifts to for Christmas 2021:

Porthleven Companions, Blood Banks, Foodbank, Salvation Army, Penhaligon’s, CAP, Homeless in Helston, Methodist Church, MIND, Marie Curie, Penzance Feeding Programme.

Several projects were then suggested for gifting for Christmas 2022.

It was noted that Sally-Anne, Karen’s predecessor as Manager, now worked for SANDS, a charity supporting young soldiers. They provide a café and a safe space for the young soldiers to congregate and have somewhere to chat and discuss any worries they may have. It was agreed to send SANDS £200.

Valerie asked if a Dementia and Alzheimer’s charity could be considered. It was agreed that, if a local charity supporting this could be found we would gift £500. Otherwise, it will be sent to MIND.

Anne suggested Children in Need, who are supporting charities gifting beds for children, for cases where children are sharing beds or have none at all. It was agreed that this would be looked into.

It was noted that Porthleven School might be aware of local families needing assistance. Barbara will contact the School to ask if there may be a need for a local family or families in the village. A donation of £200 was suggested and agreed for this.

The Methodist Church are currently offering soup and bread on Fridays. It was agreed to give the Methodist Church £200 for their ‘warm space’ initiative.

Karen noted that the Lizard Community Fund are raising money to provide a dinner (possibly at Mullion Football Club) for those who are likely to be alone at Christmas. It was suggested and agreed that £200 should be gifted towards this fund.

It was reported that Blood Banks, based out of Ocean BMW, Falmouth, may be in need of assistance still. It is essential work, assisted by volunteer bike riders. It was suggested and agreed that £200 be given.

The Foodbank currently are in desperate need of long-life milk donations. Glen offered to look into providing a large quantity of milk to them. A monetary donation may be held off until Jan/Feb 2023.

It was noted that the Penhaligon Trust do amazing things to assist bereaved children in many different ways, as recently shown on Children in Need. It was agreed to send them £500.

It was agreed to send the Salvation Army £500.

Barbara asked if we have given to the Air Ambulance recently. It was discussed and agreed to hold any further donations to them until our anniversary in 2024.

Christians Against Poverty, Helston, assist with financial aid and advice to the local community. It was agreed to send them £250.

It was also agreed to send £500 to Marie Curie.

The Feeding Project in Penzance still need financial aid and it was agreed to send £500.

In total therefore, funds of £4000 would be given. (Glen, I make that £3750 – am I missing one? Or is that correct as nearly £4k?)

Christmas closure dates were agreed. Last day of opening would be Friday 23[rd] December, continuing sales into the afternoon if it was felt needed. The following two weeks (w/c 26 Dec and w/c 2 Jan) the shop will be closed. Any assistance for Karen to remove Christmas decorations and to prepare for the New Year are welcomed. Re-open date to be Monday 9[th] Jan 2023.

It was reported that almost 300 teddy bears were given as one donation. They are selling well and a window display will be considered to push sales.

Glen gave all volunteers a £25 gift voucher as a thank you for another successful year at the shop.

Bernard and Brian will be given chocolates as a gift in lieu of a voucher. Barbara will also visit the Jewellery Workshop in Porthleven, who assist greatly with valuations and identification of gems and jewels with a higher value. They will be given a small gift as a thank you.

Anne was thanked particularly for her lovely knitted chocolate coin gift bags which are proving popular. Anne asked for her thanks to be passed to everyone for their recent support to her.
