Annual Report 2024/2025

Over this period SWFFL has been one of consolidation rather than expansion.

We still have 11 venues, mostly managed by lead coaches at each venue. Coaches are still the life blood of SWFFL as are all of the volunteers. No one receives any remuneration, except the fisheries that we visit, and they usually give us a ‘deal’ to help reduce costs.

Out of the fishing season some venues close while others still meet to dress flies, practice knots, and watch DVD’s to increase their knowledge. Usually by the time the season opens again, March or April, we are raring to go.

We have also hosted days for nurses and hospital staff, who deal with breast cancer, both locally and as far away as Gloucester. They spend most of the day with us where we explain what we do, why we do it and what our aims are. We also give everyone a brief casting lesson which produces a lot of laughing and fun. As everyone finds that they can actually produce a good cast at the end of it they can go away being able to tell their patients that ‘if I can do it, so can you’. We also learn from them, as they are face to face with patients they can mention us, if the think it’s suitable for that persons needs and capabilities.

We were delighted when Dame Judi Dench joined us to celebrate our anniversary at an open air picnic. We were doubly blessed as the weather was glorious and everyone had a marvellous day.

Financially, though we exceeded our expenditure over income again, it was a lot less than the year before. We have taken steps to address this in 2025 and we have plenty of reserves.

Patrick Veale Chairman.
