## Aims & Purpose: 

After being established initially to support just one school, Zenith Education now supports fourteen schools. This significantly improves the lives and education of the socio-economically impoverished children across four slum areas in the northern part of Mumbai. 

Achievements: 

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** 

Children in Malwani, one of the largest slums in Asia, are trapped in the well documented ‘Poverty Cycle’.  It is nearly impossible for families to escape this cycle without outside intervention. 

Zenith Education continues to work through its expanding group of schools to provide children with an education. Education is recognised as one of the most important factors in allowing individuals to escape poverty. Zenith is also very proud to provide at least one working toilet in every school and has been involved with funding construction of toilets, in schools where none was available. Open-air defecation continues to be a huge challenge in India and all Zenith Group children have access to a toilet and clean water during the school day.

The Trustees, when making decisions, have had due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant.

Section D                      Achievements and performance 

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

This reporting period, represents another challenging year for Zenith Education. The lasting effects of the Covid pandemic on Donor behaviour have continued to impact receipts. During the previous reporting period, all of the Zenith Group schools had been closed in response to Government directives. The Trustees are delighted to report that during this period, the schools have gradually reopened and children have been able to recommence face-to-face learning. Remote learning was effective as a short-term response to the pandemic, but educators would almost universally agree that in-person learning is optimal. Each of our schools has recovered from the Pandemic well, but at different rates. The larger, well-established schools have proved most resilient, with numbers quickly approaching pre-pandemic levels. Our smaller and newer schools have found it more challenging, but initial signs are positive and numbers continue to grow. During the pandemic, many families became used to children being at home and there has been some reluctance to allow children to return to school. Sadly, this is because many children worked during the pandemic, often in illicit activities, bringing in extra household income. 

Donations during this period have been limited. The trustees remain committed to providing funds that result in the highestimpact investing. Whilst the needs in our communities remain many and varied and we receive a large number of requests to provide financial support, the Trustees have pledged to invest in lasting, sustainable education projects only. 

As the schools return to normal operations, Zenith’s pre-pandemic planning remains in place. The aim is still to develop and grow our second cluster of schools and then repeat this process during the next few years. 

The Trustees are also discussing strategies for taking the model of low-income school cooperation interstate. It is our belief, that with a new tranche of funding, our proven model could be developed and expanded, allowing more schools and their children & families to benefit from a robust education. We are seeking support from Donors for our concept.
