## Aims & Purpose: 

After being established initially to support just one school, Zenith Education now supports twelve schools. This significantly improves the lives and education of the socio-economically impoverished children across four slum areas in the northern part of Mumbai. 

Achievements: 

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)** 

Children in Malwani, one of the largest slums in Asia, are trapped in the well documented ‘Poverty Cycle’.  It is nearly impossible for families to escape this cycle without outside intervention. 

Zenith Education continues to work through its expanding group of schools to provide children with an education. Education is recognised as one of the most important factors in allowing individuals to escape poverty. Zenith is also very proud to provide at least one working toilet in every school and has been involved with funding construction of toilets, in schools where none was available. Open-air defecation continues to be a huge challenge in India and all Zenith children have access to a toilet during the school day.

The Trustees, when making decisions, have had due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant.

Section D                      Achievements and performance 

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** 

During this reporting period, Zenith Education has been severely impacted by the Covid pandemic. As has been widely reported in the media, India and in particular, its major metropolitan areas, has been severely affected. 

As a result of the changing landscape and evolving situation, Zenith has had to respond appropriately. 

The schools have been closed (under government instruction) since early 2020. At various points during the subsequent months there had been hopes that they could reopen, but closures now look set to remain until Q3, or even Q4, 2021. 

Each school has been providing teaching and learning remotely where possible, but the range and impact of this has been limited by access to technology within each school’s cohort. Access to phones, laptops, pads and internet access is very limited within the slum communities and so education for Zenith’s children has been reduced. 

Whilst education remains the Charity’s priority, during the last 18 months, survival has become a concern for many of our communities and their populations. The schools have been involved in the provision of emergency food supplies where possible. 

Zenith facilitated the purchase of a building in Malwani during 2019. This has not been able to operate as a school during 2020 and early 2021, so it has been utilised instead for storage and distribution of food; meeting space for the Heads and school leaders; a training centre for teaching staff and as a hub for remote teaching. Alongside all of our other schools, it will reopen as soon as local conditions and government guidance permit. 

The division of the Zenith Group into two clusters of schools has proved very successful and the aim remains to develop and grow Cluster 2, and then repeat this process nationally during the next few years. 

Fundraising remains a challenge, as always, for the charity. As with all charities, the pandemic has affected Donor motivation. That said, a significant donation was very gratefully received during 2020 which is reserved for CapEx work on Zenith’s new building. This work has not been possible yet, but again, as soon as conditions allow it will be completed. 

Another challenge this year has been the travel restrictions. This has precluded the Trustees from visiting the projects and led to a reliance on remote communications. This has been successful, but it is hoped that inperson communications can begin in 2021 or 2022.
