The charity is registered with the Charity Commission No. 1157776. The trustees are responsible for the management and administration of the charity, supported primarily by the Chief Executives. The trustees give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits. Trustees are selected and appointed by the committee. ## **Objectives and activities** ## _Objectives of the charity_ To advance the education in the arts for the public benefit. Particularly but not exclusively by the provision of art workshops, and exhibitions of the work that is produced. Dover smART Project was founded in 2013 to provide opportunities for disadvantaged children in Dover to take part in a wide range of creative activities and experiences to boost their confidence, enhance their wellbeing, raise their aspirations and widen their outlook on the world. The charity soon evolved and began similar work with other groups, such as people without a home and hospice patients, using art and creativity to support their various needs. ## _Main activities undertaken for the public benefit_ A lot of our community projects and work within schools has been on hold because of the pandemic. However, we have maintained a significant presence through our remote support projects and social media channels. In March 2021 we were able to restart The ART of Age weekly group for our older community and those living with a dementia. Throughout this year we have continued with our Creative Care Package project for Young Carers. The uncertainty of Covid 19 and the vulnerability of the young people we support meant we couldn’t restart groups their groups until later Summer 2021. The number of beneficiaries we have has tripled since the start of the pandemic. We have 16 volunteers who help run groups and assist with community events up until COVID lockdown restrictions were put in place. ## **Achievements and performance** ## _Main achievements of the charity during the year_ The charity engaged with over 2000 people throughout this year, the numbers are significantly less than previous years due to the pandemic and us not being able to run community projects and work in schools. ## Pandemic Work The last year has changed the way we work and our focus has been to allow groups to meet in a safe, supported way following government rules around groups. We have also offered support to the people by deriving remote services that include virtual session and creative care packages which have enabled us to stay connected and offer support to those who need it most. ## smART Knickers Is a movement to end period poverty in Dover. We have 25 community baskets where members of the public can help themselves to sanitary products There are baskets in 3 primary schools, 5 secondary schools, 1 special school and 1 local college. We have distributed over 9000 sanitary products. Supported 2000 woman and girls. - Page 2 - ## Dover smART Project **Trustees' Annual Report (continued)** ## Young Carers This project has grown again in the past 12 months and continues to be funded by Children in Need. We currently have over 150 young carers registered, ranging from the ages of 5 to 18 attending. Most of the support we have provided these young people during this year has been through our Creative Care Package project. In late Summer 2021 we relaunched weekly groups where our trained staff enrich the lives of these children with creative and wellbeing activities. The groups provide much- needed opportunities for the children to just be children and to find friendship in others who are experiencing the same challenges. ## The ART of Age We now have over 30 participants enjoying our weekly intergenerational community group that focuses on reducing loneliness and isolation for those over 65 and those living with a dementia. We meet every Tuesday, in a relaxed atmosphere, where people can drop in and have a cup of tea and take part in a creative activity. There is a genuine sense of wellbeing both from everyone who takes part in the sessions. Part of this year saw us supporting our beneficiaries in the same way as the Young Carers, but with the additional of assistance with essential items for those who did not have families nearby. ## Smart Bus - Route to Happiness A 3 year community engagement project, funded by The National Lottery, Reaching Communities fund, working with 6 local communities to design and create artworks that will improve public spaces that are often neglected and affected by antisocial behaviour. We will focus our work in the most deprived wards in Dover, which include St Radigunds, Buckland, Castle, Elmsvale & Maxton, Town & Pier. The project will include; engagement days with local schools. visits to local community centres and days onsite doing the artwork. ## Recognition In 2021 we were finalists for the Kent Charity Awards, we won a champion award for Kent Mental Health & Wellbeing Awards and also Kent Volunteering Award. ## **Financial Review** At the year end the charity had no funds deficit. The charity adopts a small charities financial controls policy. During the year the charities primary source of income remains from our grant funded projects. The charity accelerated its fundraising capacity despite the ongoing pandemic and was able to build reserves to support our beneficiaries into the future. We continue to work with a variety of different funding providers who continue to financially support the charity with achieving its aims and objectives. It is the trustees policy to hold reserves of approximately six months overhead expenditure. As at the year end the charity held enough reserves to cover overhead expenditure for over 12 months. Within the total unrestricted funds are some designated funds which are funds provisioned to support certain objectives > The annual report was approved by the trustees on and signed on their behalf by **27 June 2022** **Tracey Henley** Treasurer - Page 3 - ## Dover smART Project ## **Independent Examiners Report** The independent examiner's report to the Trustees of Dover smART Project (Charity Registration Number 1157776) on the annual accounts for the year ended 23 September 2021 set out on pages 5 to 7. I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (the "Trust") for the year ended 23 September 2021. As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ("the Act"). I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried our under section 125 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect: 1) accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Act or 2) the accounts do not accord with the accounting records I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
