Our vision is of a community space for all those who live or work in, or visit, the

Our Mission is.
to provide a hub for the communty - a space to support both individual
well-being and communty cohesion - fostering equal opportunities. and
being the first choice point of ac￿55 to sOUr￿S of infomation. advice and
guidance, and
to promole lrteracy. education and culture in the Upper Afan Valley.
encouragiry a love of books and leaming in people of all ages.
Our current objects are"

CymerAfan Communty Library
14 April 2022- 311l M8rch 2023

Our overall approaGh lo developing our community library has kn major strands. We I
build on our core purpose of providing library services to the community of Ihe
Upper Afan Valley.. and
i • develop other uses of the building, Library Plusl in keeping with that core purpose
whi¢h will contribule towards the creation of the library as a Community Hub a
mutti-purrK)se community facilrty.
Our building. Library Plusl
r&opened on 16m May 2022 following the completion of
the refurbishment programrne during vthich we installed an air Sour￿ heat pump &
central healing system, replaced the roof and solar panels, added some bird and bat
boxes, installed additional intemal roof insulation. external cladding of the walls and a
new porch. built three new rooms, an additional toilet and extra storage space, and
installed a new ceiling, flooring and eco-friendly lighting All of this provided us with a
modem flexible space which enabled us to re-build the seNices, activities and events
we had been offeting pnor to the Covid 19 pandemic and gave us the opportuntty to
ftjrther develop a new offering for our community.
During the period since re-opening the libiary and tea-room have been open for 28
hours a week vdith some additional regular activity outside of those hours such as the
Woolly wonders Craft group: film shows. yoga dass and psychology evening class.
Other regular activities included the book club. art dass and parent & baby group.
The Food Bank conlinued to operate every Friday and remains available to anyone
who needs IL The Pantry. our So￿al supemiarkel. opens three times a week on
Monday and Friday afternoons and Salurday momings. We are members of the
Independent Fwd Aid Nefv￿rk aTrJ wort( in partnership with Fareshare lo distribute
surplus supermarket food.
To use the Pantry users make a small payrnent1£3.50) in retum for some choice over
the ten items of food they receive. This was to reduce the stigma attached to being
the recipient of chanly from the food bank and had the benefit of promoting a feeling
of being a customer with some Iimrted choi￿. The Pantry membership more than
doubled over the year to 120. Our experience is that people often need to use the
food bank for several weeks but Ihen erther drop out or move on to Ihe Pantry.
From January to March 2023. in response to the cost-of-living crisis and the high cosl
¢f energy. we oK*ned for additional hours to provide a Wann Space for anyone to
share with free hot drinks and snacks.
We continued lo work Closely with Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Servi￿,
Gwynfi Miners, Community Hall. the County Library Servi￿. the local councillors. and
we also kept in touch with our MP. Stephen lthnnock and Senedd Member. David
Rees. We also hosted several school visits.
Our paid staff during the year comprised.. Lindsey Thomas, (Devekjpmenl Officer, 30
hrs), Tym Thomas (Centre Coordinator. 30 hrs). Peter Lakin (Bookkeeper: 3 hrs, until
December 20221 and Sharon Ackery {Cleaner. S hrs) We are grateful to all of them
fof keeping our operalions running dunng what has been 8 year of many changes.
Thanks are a150 due to our volunteer team which included Bob Chapman, Melanie
Emmett, Alan Furnell. Andrew Hooper. Dana lancu. Debra Jenkins, Ann Mayer,
Euni￿ Newing, Delyth O'shea, Sian Paul, Andrew Roberts, Lawrence Seath. Nick
Taylor. Ceri Ellen Thomas. Alison White. Jean White & James Williams.
Throughout Ihe year we have continued lo benefrt from free electricity from the solar
panels installed by the Egni Cooperative on our roof.
In planning and delivering all these individual activities, and during the proces5 for
reviewng our strategic plan, the Trustees have considered and had regard to the
public benefit guidance issued by the Chatity Commkssion.
