Barnes Wallis Foundation
Trustees’ Annual Report for 2020/21
The start of this year coincided with the various measures taken by the Government in response to the Covid pandemic. Consequently, like so many other organisations, this year was a very challenging one for the Foundation. Our outreach programme of talks and presentations ceased, and it was difficult to plan for future years. Trustees decided to shift the emphasis of the Foundation’s work and move towards seeking more opportunities for sponsoring young people to pursue careers in engineering. On education sponsorship we have committed to being a sponsor of the Barrow & District Association of Engineers (BDAE) work in awarding scholarships and bursaries to young people. Our initial commitment is for 5 years. BDAE has been operating its programme of scholarships & bursaries for many years and has built up the necessary infrastructure and contacts. We have worked previously with BDAE, and we had an exhibition about the work of Sir Barnes Wallis at the Dock Museum in Barrow a few years ago. The location is significant as Sir Barnes Wallis worked for Vickers in Barrow for much of the First World War and it is where he started his career in aviation. By supporting the BDAE we achieve our objectives without having to develop the necessary infrastructure.
We have also adopted a new way of bringing the work and achievements of Sir Barnes Wallis to the attention of a wider public. We have sponsored and will provide relevant images for a compartment of a vintage Hull & Barnsley Railway carriage currently being restored at Hull College; when complete it will be used on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway showing the link with Howden where Sir Barnes Wallis designed the R100 airship in the 1920s.
We continue to respond to enquiries about Sir Barnes Wallis which we receive from members of the public, authors etc.
Many of Sir Barnes Wallis’ personal papers etc came up for auction following the death of his elder daughter. Through the auctioneers and Sir Barnes’ family we were supplied with copies of some of these items. We also bid for some of the originals but were unsuccessful.
One of our trustees gave a talk to Brooklands Museum members via Brooklands TV. The subject was the recovery of a couple of the Barnes Wallis designed Highball bombs from Loch Striven. This presentation is now available on YouTube.
One of our past Chairmen, Paul Beaver, resigned during the year. We thank Paul for his work with the Foundation and his endeavours to broaden our horizons.
