Session Title: Ipswich Deaf Society Extraordinary Meeting Saturday 20[th] April 2024

Attendees: Approx. 40 people.

1. Chairperson’s report, sale of building and the future of IDS – Alison Berry

It has been a difficult year compared to last year’s AGM. Last year 2023 had lots of positive things going on, but 2024 has been less active.

We have lost two key people on the trustee committee. Penny and Amanda have both stepped down for personal reasons. Doug is also currently absent for health reasons.

The building is costing far too much to maintain and is draining the funds. The funds should be used for the deaf community, not the building. A core group has come together to discuss what to happen next. The Suffolk Hearing Advisory Service (SHAS) who rent rooms in the building are leaving 13[th] May and have found another building. Their rent was not enough to cover the electricity they use. IDCS have also found a new place to rent. They were previously paying £100 a month rent. The building has been put on the market for £365,000 .

The core group members are, Alison Berry, Gavin Songer (Vicky Songer), Linda Masterson, Doug Gray, Emma-Jane Whiting (Claire Barr), and Lorraine Thurkettle. A show of hands to vote agree/disagree - more than half of the attendees voted in agreement for the core group.

Lorraine and Alison have been making an inventory list of all the things in the building. Chairs, tables, kitchen things etc. We will rent a storage facility to keep the things we don’t want to sell.

However, we will need to sell lots of other things in the building. Perhaps we could have an auction for everyone? E.g., there is a big cooker/oven in the outdoor cupboard. Electrical things are difficult to sell so it will need to be ‘sold as seen’. When we know more, we will have an open day where you and other people can come to buy things from the centre.

Q. If we do not sell or if there is a lower offer, will we accept?

A. Two people have viewed the building this week, we will need to see what happens.

Q. What will happen to the money once it is sold?

A. We are not planning on buying a new building. We could join up with another social club in Ipswich to rent a venue regularly for events. We will keep the sale money in the bank for events. IDS membership will pay for rent on another building.

Q. If we rent a building, could we eventually buy the building in future? What about the future deaf generations.

A. No plans to. Many other deaf buildings are also being sold because of the cost to maintain them.

Q. Norwich deaf club rent with another social club, but they have a permanent residence in the building. They have many activities every day at the centre.

A. They rent from Norfolk County Council. Suffolk County Council have already sold many of their buildings.

IDS will not close! It is about keeping the IDS events going. Possibly a large event at Jimmy’s Farm - Celebrating being deaf, deaf culture, social, sign language teaching. (Not like Norwich Deaf Festival where the focus is on equipment and helping etc).

Q. Could we have more than one day a week events in future? Sign language groups, CODA, social events, etc.

A. It will depend on what other social clubs/rented places will let us use. If we rent too many separate venues at the same time, the money will be used up very quickly! Alison has started to think about plans for an event next year. A ‘Deaf Celebration’ at Jimmy’s Farm. The main focus will be to celebrate being deaf and our community! If we rent too many places at once, it will drain our funds very quickly!

Q. I feel strongly that we the IDS should keep going as a strong group and try to keep the building. How can we keep it going financially? Membership? Sponsorship? If we bought another building, could we use our skills collectively to maintain the building and keep it in good repair?

A. Some organisations may be willing to give us funds/donations to maintain the IDS; e.g., Ipswich Town Football Club, UK Power Network, etc.

Q. Where would the new deaf centre be? Town centre? Norwich Road Social Club? A. Norbridge Social Club on Norwich Road would be great, but we can’t offer them any rent or buy anywhere until we have sold the current building first.

Q. How much would rent be for a different building?

A. We don’t know until we look around. This year, we have not charged IDS membership, so we have no income this year. If you would like to donate when you buy teas and coffee etc, every little helps!

Q. Will there be disabled and deaf access in the building that we rent? E.g. Deaf flashing alarms, lifts etc? Will insurance be covered etc?

A. Good point, we will need to think about that. Perhaps we would need to pay the place we rent to have it installed? Dereham Deaf Club share their rooms with the Royal Legion. Alison will ask Myra Daines how they work around deaf access.

Q. What happened to the Lottery bid that we did before?

A. Last year, Marie Waller (SHAS) said she was going to speak with someone at the Council about a Lottery bid. However, the IDS do not meet the criteria. Alison has been looking for other bids, but it is very difficult. Some funding bids will only fund groups for older people, but not younger people. Many funding organisations will not allow for applications for the building maintenance (Capital Funding). A big shame.

Q. What will happen to the bowling trophies, sports equipment etc?

A. We will only sell what belongs to the IDS – not personal things! Please take them home if you keep things here. E.g., We have 4 boxes of sports trophies in the cupboard, some are over 40 years old! What shall we do with them? There are also many boxes of old AGM minutes and photos etc. Alison’s daughter-in-law works at the Suffolk Archives and can store them at the Suffolk Hold in Ipswich.

Q. Who will decide on a new venue? Will it be a collective vote? Can other people look around the new places to rent?

A. It is your club! We would value your input! It will be discussed with you when things happen.

If you want to discuss about the building, please come and talk to us and get involved.

2. Budget update – Gavin Songer.

Gavin is currently acting treasurer, as Doug is not very well at the moment.

Doug is happy to share information about his health; he has had a bowel cancer diagnosis which was picked up through the bowel screening home testing kit. He had an operation on Tuesday (16[th] April) and is doing very well! He is now home and recovering.

Alison would like to remind all people, over 60 years old, to do your poo tests in the post! Even if you feel well!

A. There is still some more to come from the ‘Go Fund Me’ page.

Q. The electricity bill seems very expensive! £20,000!

A. There was an issue with the meter readings last year, it has now been corrected and £9,000 was refunded. It is still approx. £10,000 a year, but that is because there is no gas in the building, so electricity is used for heating and cooling too. We are hoping to get some VAT back from the electricity company as we are a charity.

3. Update from Social Club – Emma-Jane Whiting

Since EJ has taken over, the social club has had several events this year that have been very successful! Halloween party, Christmas Eve, parties etc. Have been quite successful! Some of the Friday night social evenings have been quite quiet, only 5 or 7 people sometimes!

Would be nice to have a few events as a celebration and ‘close’ of this building. Games and activities. Would be nice to invite other deaf societies to come join us? We could organise watching the Euro Cup at the deaf centre in June?

Claire and EJ are hoping to have a summer BBQ this year at the end of May. We will need your support and help with it! There will be a raffle, bar etc.

Norwich deaf club were supposed to come for a coffee morning in May, but messages through the deaf community says the person organising has been unwell? Is there another person who we could ask at Norwich?

Any ideas for events and activities – write ideas down on a poster, add a post on Facebook, or just tell us!

Q. Is there a definite closing date?

A. No. Not until the building sells.

Q. What is happening with the deaf church?

A. Penny will carry on with the deaf church and arrange her own events and activities. She is currently using a room in this building. Once it is sold, she will make her own arrangements.

4. AOB and keeping in touch:
