Structure, governance and management

The board
The Mathiesen Centre Trust is governed by a board of trustees, whose principal responsibilities are the setting and monitoring of the strategic direction of the organisation and the establishment of policy. All trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no financial benefits from the charity.
Ensuring that our work delivered our aims
The trustees hold a strategy meeting each year to review the future direction of the organisation and ensure that it remains focused on the charity’s purposes.
The trustees have referred to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing their aims and objectives and in planning our future activities. The trustees have not identified any detriment or harm. During the year the board of trustees met formally four times.
Risk management
The board of trustees has ultimate responsibility for the management of risk. During the year, the board reviewed and updated the form and content of the risk register. Risk management is integrated with planning and budgeting and the organisation is committed to developing understanding of a risk-aware approach to working. The board keeps major risks under regular review.

This year marked a pivotal stage in our journey towards resuming normal operations after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the evolving situation, our facility has implemented enhanced operational controls to ensure a safe and effective working environment. We have been actively collaborating with various user groups of our facilities, offering support and flexibility to facilitate the continuation of their activities wherever feasible.
In an effort to comply with COVID-19 safety measures, we have made several adaptations to our facility. These changes have been preserved, and we've undertaken a comprehensive initiative to educate all our user groups about the necessary control measures to ensure the safe utilization of our building. Our focus on these health and safety aspects reflects our commitment to the well-being of our community.
Financially, the organization has seen a period of stabilization. Through meticulous financial management, we have successfully managed to cut down on operational losses significantly. Our financial reserves have remained robust, providing us with a solid foundation to navigate these uncertain times. We are optimistic that, with the gradual resumption of full use of our facility, we will see a rebound to our previous income levels.
3
Our confidence in the future is bolstered by our prudent approach to financial management and the strength of our reserves. We believe that these factors will enable us to continue offering substantial support to various groups. By doing so, we aim to maximize the benefits to the community, aligning with our organizational goals and values. This approach underscores our dedication to not just weathering the current challenges but emerging from them stronger and more connected with the community we serve.
