Para 1.17 and
1.19
Since its inception, the main activity of the charity
has been its work with Al Shifa Hospital, Gaza.
The collaborative charitable initiative between
these two organisations aims to establish a kidney
transplant programme serving the population of
Gaza. The specific aims of this project are to:

Establish a kidney transplantation programme
at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza
Establish the framework which will regulate
transplant activity in Gaza
Over the life of the project the long and short-term
objectives have been as follows:

Long term plan is to establish a kidney
transplant programme in Gaza run by local
expertise.

To continue transplant activity with the
support from the Royal Liverpool Hospital
Transplant Unit until the Gaza programme is fully
independent.
This involves consultant transplant surgeons and
associated medical staff travelling to Gaza to carry
out surgery and provide expert teaching and
advice.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Dialysis for end stage renal failure represents a
huge burden on society and healthcare budget.
Transplantation offers a better quality of life for
patients with end stage renal failure and a better
chance of being productive and keeping a job.
Also it offers longer survival in comparison to
dialysis. It is estimated that each dialysis patient
costs around $25-30.000 US dollars per year. The
course of kidney transplantation is estimated at
around $25,000 dollars for the first year and then
$3-5,000 dollars per year afterwards.
Kidney transplantation is the best treatment
option for patients with end stage renal failure.
Literature evidence indicates that kidney
transplantation offers a better quality of life
compared to dialysis and prolonged survival. Also

it is established that kidney transplantation is the most cost effective modality of treatment of kidney failure. The number of patients who are on dialysis in Gaza are around 350 patients. Currently patients who require kidney transplantation have to travel abroad to have the procedure performed with an estimated cost of around $25,000 US dollars per patient. For most patients in Gaza that is not a viable option. With the Gaza population of 2 million plus it is estimated that the need for kidney transplantation is around 75 transplants per year.
