th
VIEW or OUR 50 YEAR
This has bccn a redlly tremcndous year for Worksliop, and a very fitting way to celebrate our 50th
anniversary. The Christmas Carols provided an appropriate curtain raiscr, arguably the best ever, in
my tiine at least, with new kinds of inusical offerings to complement tlie, as ever, loud and joyfLiI
siiiging. Tlie new school facilities, and in P1( rticular t]ic siniill hall/coffee rooin dre a real bonus for
riinriin&y events like tliis, so therc has been a clear silver lining to the considerablc difficultiLs we
faced aftcr the fire.
Tliere havc been so inany highlights that it's hard to capture them all in a brief rcport but I think
everyone would agrcc that tlie two special events org<inised to marlc the anniversary really stand out.
A huge ainount of effort by the Director and Ill£￿Y volunteers went iiito organising the Aluinnus
cvent in carly March and in spite of the cliallenges of sifting through Itwgye nuinbers of defunct
einail addresses, it provcd a great success. It was wonderful to sce old and new Workshop manbers
coming together to malce inu%ic, cnjoy each other's company during the evening, and rcminisce
abolit the past. The photo displays, and in particular thc amazing boolclet produced by R()byii
Wilson-owen and her tcam of writers and photo archivists, brought back happy in￿￿orIeS for many.
Their work has given us not only an important memento, but also a bcacon for the future - the
formula that has worked so well over thc past 50 years is clearly as effective as ever.
The Anniveisary Concert in April at the prestigious.west Road concert hall was another triumph.
Superb performances fiom the All Stars, String Orchestr￿ Choir and Ja71 B2uid Iiad the 300 strong
audience roaring, and the f￿st such event in Workshop's history seems unlikely to be the last.
On more usual Workshop territory, we offered meinbers an amazing 3 8 different musical groups
during tlie year, all depcndcnt on tlie generosity and skill of our volunteer tutors. It's been
particularly heart-warming to see a crop of very taleiited youngsters joining the ranks, a very good
omen for the future. The Workshop annual picnic was well attended - moving it to coincide with
the Members Coiicert pioved a good decision, and the final event of the year, the Music Theatre
group's perfomance of Matilda was a stunning success.

Our new year hay also started very ytrongly. Well ovet 200 on-llne pre-teglstration fotms were
submitted and a very healthy crop of new members has brought us to over 300 (75 chIld￿n), I￿/•
up on last year. With these numbers, and some extremely generous donations over the past year.
our finances are in a healthy state, and the Trustees are now able to consider some mod¢st
investments to improve our resources for the future. All in all a very rosy and pleasing pictwe.
