The Charity is governed by the wrltten constttutlon, which was adopted 9 October 2013, and was
reglstered as a charlty bythe Charity Commission for England and Wales on 29 May 2014 (Regtstered
Number 1157244).
Market Aarborough Hlstorlcal Soclety (Registered Charity no. 515509) transferred 311 of Its a￿ets and
liabilities to Market Harborough Historical Society CIO (Reglstered Charity No. 1157244) on l January
2016 and it commenced its objectives from that date.

Appolntment, Inductlon and tralnlng of new Trustees
The Body of Trustees shall be at leastthree in number.
One third of the Trustees are elected annually at the Annual General Meetlng of the charity and all
members of the Society are welcome to put their names forward for election. Those who have the
appropriate sl<ills, knowledge and experlence for the effective adminlstratlon of the Charity are
particularly encouraged to Stand. Each new Trustee wlll be brlefed on their legal obligations under
charity law, the content of the Constitution, the committee and decision maklng processe5 and the
most recentflnanclal performance of the charity. In addition, all trustees will be active￿ encouraged to
attend external tralning courses to enhance understanding of their responslblllties and to Improve their
effectivene5S.
Objectlves and Actlvltles
The object of the Charity is to promote public education in the study and research of the archaeology
and history of Market Harborough and the surroundlng area.
The Trurtees aim to achleve th15 objective through collection, collation and disseminatlon of
Information, holding lectures, discussions, and visits, undertaking historical and 3rchaeologlcal studles,
malntalning and augmentlng colleci'lons and promoting the publicatlon of historical information.
The TNstees conflrm that they have referred to the guldance contalned in the Charity Commission'5
general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the Charit¢s aims and objecttve5 and In planning
future activities.
Achlevements In the Perlod
During the period from l January 2024 the Chartty has achleved its objecttves and benefitted the
public through education by holdlng lectures of historical InteresL gÉven by members and guest
speaker5 and arranging a summer outing to Cotesbach Educational Trust near Lutterworth, for
member5 and guest5. The Societywas unable to plan or to hold its annual History Day event again In
October 2024, largely due to the availabllity of a sultable venue, and too great a commitment to an
3geing Committee. The Committee has yet to declde on the future of this evenL
The reprint of 'the Hlstory of Market Harborough Volurne I: From Early Times to the 18th Centurf,
researched, written and publlshed by members of the Soclety continues to sell it3 book sellers, the
library/museum and other outlet5 In Market Harborough and surrounding areas. 'fhe History of
th
Market Harborough Volume11: from the 18 Century to modern times., also researched and written
bythe member5was published early in 2024, and wasforsale Inthe usual outlets from April 2024.Thls
newvolume was partiallyfunded by grantsfrom two local charltles and the Soclety.
Thesoclety cc>ntlnues to produce and distrlbuie the annual Harborough Historian journal and has been
active in its role as advisor and partner In the runnlng of the Market Harborough Museum; the Charity
Is a one third partner with Market Harborough Dlstrlct Council and Leicestershire County Council, In
the museum.

The achievements and contributions of two longstandlng Trustees, the late Pat Perklns, and Rosalind
Wlllatts, to the Soclety, Its members and the Committee, together with their in-depth knowledge of the
hlstory Gf Market Harborough, were recognised In the publlcatlon of Indlvidual volumes Df thelr work,
presented to them by the So¢lety.
Membership
At the end of 2024 membership of the Soclety had increased to l?212023: 79 members). The Society
is attively recrutting new members and has appointed a committee member with relevant experience
as Medla & Publlclty Officer to raise awareness within the local community and local rnedi3. We have
been pleased to see so many vlsltors at our monthly meetings and wlll try to encourage them to joln
the Society.
Flnancial Revlew
The thartvs general unrestritted Income has increased substantially this year. largely due to sales of
The History of Market Harborough Volumes l and 2, some of the costs of which were funded by gr8rts
and bythe Soclety In previous year5.
The publlcation of the Harborough Historian and maintaining regular contact wlth member5 by
newsletter represent much of the remalnlng expenditure. Regular ¢¢sts such as Insuran￿ and
accountsncy fees still apply.
Followlng the requlrement to apen a new bank account more suited to a CIO charlty durlng 2023. we
C3n confirm that this has been operating successfully. Durlng 2024 all remalning Bank and Building
Society accounts were closed, brlnging all banking operations under one roof, Natwe5t providlng
access to modern banklng facllltles and payment choices for both members and the Society.
The charity consldérs that a general reserve in the region of £5,000 is requlred togèther with specific
funds. Although the general reseNes shown in the Statement of Assets and Liabilitles 15 in ex￿$5 of
this requirement some of thls may be required to fund reprlnts of existing publications and future
projects.
