Objertives and Actlvities
The object of the Charity is to promote public educalion in the study and research in the archaeology
ènd history of Market Harborough and the surrounding area.
The Trustee5 aim to achieve this objertive through collection. collation and dissemination of
information. holding lectures, discussions. and visits. undertaking hÈstorical and archaeological studies,
maintaining and augmenting collection5 and promotingthe publication of historical information.
The Trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contsined in the Charity Commission's
general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the Chariws aims and objectives and in planning
future activitie5.
Achlevements in the Period
During the period from I" larsuary 2023 the Chaaty has achieved its objertives and benefitted the
public through education by holding leCtU￿S of historical interest, given by members and guest
Speakers and arranging a summer outing to Kelmarsh Hall for Members and gue5t&
Members of the Society have researched. written and published The History of Market Harbor()ugh
Vol l.. From Early Times to the 18 Ceqturf and are delighted to have seen the book on sale in book
sellers, the library/rruseum and other outlets in Market HaTborough and s¢Jrrounding areas, and all
copie5 were sold out. Further copies of this Volurne wère r&printed during the last quarter of 2023
and are again available for sale. During the year members have continued their research toward5
Volume11, fram the 18 Century to modern times. Funding for this volume was secured towards the
end 012023 and publication will be arranged for the first quarter of 2024. The Committee decided to
ènsure that more copie5 of the 2. volume will be available.
The Challty has produced and distributed the annual Hart)orough Historian journal and beÈn active in

museum. The Charity is proud to Itave made a subrtantial donation to the purchase of a rèplica of the
Hallaton Helrnet which will be on display in the Museum. The Ch3rity was unable to plan or to hold its
annual History Day event again in Ottober 2023 largely due to the availability of a suitable venue, and
too great a commitment to aEt ageing Committee. The Committee ha5 yet to decide on the future of
this event.

Membershlp
At the end of 2U23 the Sodety had 79 nembers12022= 103 membersl. Membership has dèclined but
it is not clear whether this is partly due to the current economic climate andlor the demographi￿ of
the Society. The Society is actively recruiting new members and has seen some increase in the early
part 012024. We have been pleased to See so many visitors at our monthly meetings and will try to
encourage them to join the Society.
Ftnancial Review
The charity's general unrestrirted income has fallen slightly this year, primarily due to payments
relatiD.g to the ￿-prInt of The History of Market Harf)orough Vol l. and increased costs relating to
venue hire for monthly meetings.
The publicatlon of the Harborough Historian and maintaining regular contact with members by
newsletter represent much of the expenditure. Regular costs such as insurance and accountanry fees
During 2023 our 8ankers, Natwest. adwsed us that our current bank accounts were no longer suitable
for a CIO Charity and that we were obliged to open a new business bank account and to transfer our
a55ets into this account and the old account wa5 clrksed. We now have access to modem banking
facilities which should offer our members additional services and benefits. which were prewously
unavailable to us.
The charity considers that a general reserve in the region of £5.￿)0 is required togethef Wlth specific
funds $0 the general reserves shown in the Staternent of Assets and Liabilities 15 in excess trf the
requirement, although this still may be needed to fvnd The History of Market Harborough Vol11.
Declaration
I declare, in my capacity of Charity Trustee and Treasurer. that the Trtjstees:
Have approved the report above.. and
Have authorised me to sign it on their behatf
