Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document
The Foundation exists to nurture and develop the creative and technical skills and talents of young people by providing them with equipment and facilities which will enable them to produce and distribute audio visual programmes and other types of digital content relating to their culture, history, music and the world in which they live.
Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts.
We continued our work in 3 Enfield Schools, working with groups of young people at risk of exclusion. This work was funded by a a £6,872 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund together with funds from NEXUS Enfield & the schools themselves. The students were chosen by the schools as all being at risk of exclusion, engaging in criminal activity, failing to form meaningful relationships or lack of attainment. The end of the project data from the schools demonstrates that most of the students became more engaged with their education, raised their achievement levels, some were at risk of becoming involved in criminal activities and were diverted from this path. Self-esteem was raised in most of the students, and several went on to regularly take part in drama workshops provided either by us or partner organisations.
The Foundation continued to provide drama mentors for the REACH project in Enfield for the summer term of 2023. REACH works with groups of young people in secondary education who have been identified of being at risk of exclusion for 1 term. More than 80% of participants manage to successfully return and remain in mainstream education. This work was funded by the London Borough of Enfield. REACH closed its doors in July 2023 when funding for the project stopped.
We received £9,400 from The Department of Levelling Up Housing and Communities Windrush fund to run a series of workshops in the community aimed at creating greater understanding between elders of the Windrush generation & young people. We made a short film entitled Bridging the Gap which we premiered at the Dugdale Centre in Enfield in front of 200 people. The film is available on Kush Films website & on our YouTube channel and has to date been viewed more than 4000 times
We received £4,100 from Untold Stories in Enfield to make a documentary film about the 70s football team When Newbury Ruled. This film premiered to great acclaim at the Dugdale Centre & has subsequently been screened in several cinemas including the Curzon in Shoreditch, East London.
We held the long-awaited inter-School Drama Awards at the Shaw Theatre in Euston. 6 schools took part & the winner of the coveted Best Production prize was Fresh Steps Independant & SEMH school with a moving short play about their own experiences of how people with SEMH are often perceived and treated by the wider community.
The design and launch of the website (www.rudolphwalkerfoundation.com) was completed by Kando Design.
A trustee away day was held in October 2023 to kick off ongoing work to strengthen our board of trustees and governance.
Financial
The charity income totalled £47,349 Restricted income totalling £20,372 was made up of £6,872 from the National Lottery Community Fund for our work in schools, £9,400 from the Dept, of Levelling Up Houses & Communities Windrush Fund for the Bridging the Gap project & £4,100 from Untold Stories in Enfield for our short film When Newbury Ruled.
The Foundation finished the year with a deficit of £1687 which will be met from reserves.
The charity has £10,266 in the bank with creditors due a total of £2,303. As in previous years the work of the Foundation takes place once funds are in place so there is very small financial risk. The largest risk to the Foundation is currently the lack of funds to employ a full-time administrator thus opportunities for funding for more of our vital work are being missed. The demand for our invaluable work with hard-to-reach young people is such that if we could employ an administrator & workshop facilitators, we could reach so many more young people
