veterinary care
4) The prevention and suppression of
cruelty and relief of suffering among animals
generally - in particular by funding and
supporting
the
work

programmes of the Lilongwe Society for the

1.19|- LSPCA UK focuses on supporting
veterinary and education programmes for
the benefit of animal welfare, particularly
with: LSPCA Malawi (including the Centre
for Animal Welfare’s programmes and
LSPCA’s Veterinary Hospital, the only one
in Malawi), Malawi’s Veterinary School at
Lilongwe University of Agriculture and
Natural Resources (LUANAR) and the
Malawi Veterinary Association.
- LSPCA UK trustees agreed a total grant of
£12738 in the year to LSPCA Malawi to
support veterinary internships and general
operating expenses, software for the
ultrasound
machine
and
veterinary
equipment. The grant ensured additional
veterinary capacity and equipment to
support the hospital to deliver services to a
range of domestic animals and livestock at
their veterinary hospital in Lilongwe and
through community outreach clinics.| |||- Donnamarie O’Connell, volunteer board
secretary to the LSPCA UK Board, visited
Malawi three times in 2024, including
meeting LSPCA CEOs. She additionally met
LSPCA CEOs on subsequent visits to
discuss current activities of the veterinary
hospital and animal welfare programmes.
-LSPCA UK continued to support LSPCA
in Malawi through veterinary and animal
welfare guidance. The Chair maintained
contact with LUANAR veterinary graduates
and continued to explore opportunities for
collaboration
between
LSPCA/LUANAR
and UK universities.
-A special resolution was passed on
24/10/2024 to extend the number of
consecutive terms a trustee is eligible to

be the only veterinary hospital in the city and
the
only
veterinary
facility
with
a
comprehensive diagnostic capability. This
was further enhanced in 2024 with the
equipment provided by LSPCA UK’s grant.
- LSPCA continues to provide internship
placements
for
LUANAR
veterinary
students,
and
international
veterinary
students including from the UK, which is
also easier with expanded clinical and office
space. This is an excellent contribution to
supporting
capacity
development
of
Malawi’s future vets, provides valuable
clinical experience in tropical diseases to
international students and also acts as a
pipeline of future vets to LSPCA. LSPCA
UK’s grant provided support for the
continuation of the internship programme.
- LSPCA UK is working with LSPCA to
further expand international vet student
