## **Achievements and Performance**

|Summary
of
the
main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the
circumstances
of
its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|Para 1.20|- LSPCA Malawi faced significant challenges
in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
LSPCA put into immediate force a range of
measures to protect staff, partners and
veterinary
clients.
LSPCA
was
given
exemption status by Government as an
essential service, and so the Veterinary
Hospital was allowed to remain open,
although operating initially on a skeleton
staff and for emergency/serious cases only.
Most activities, with the exception of urgent
response to suspect canine rabies cases,
were paused for several months. As COVID-
19 cases dropped in Malawi, community
activities, such as the donkey clinics, which
are held outside, resumed.
- LSPCA UK responded to an urgent grant
request for emergency funding to LSPCA
Malawi
to
cover
shortages
in
salaries/overheads/PPE
equipment
as
several donors paused or reduced funding
and income from the veterinary clinic fell.
The emergency grant of £9718.00 provided
immediate support to cover these shortfalls.
- In November 2020, LSPCA was operating
almost as normal and was able to launch a
new ‘Centre for Animal Welfare Mobile
Clinic’. LSPCA UK provided a grant of
£21793.64 to cover:
1) Vehicles for the Community Animal
Welfare Centre fieldwork: £18248.51
2) Veterinary equipment, medicines and
consumables: £3545.13
The aim is for this project to become self-
sustaining. The mobile clinic will operate
‘commercial days’ in high income areas 1-2
days per week where pet owners have
limited access to veterinary services, mainly
around Lilongwe but with visits also to
Mzuzu (400 km from Lilongwe) where there
is currently no veterinary clinic. The income
on commercial days will be boosted by the
selling products such as flee & worm
treatment, dog biscuits, collars etc.
The commercial days will generate income
to fund the other 3 days/week when the
mobile clinic will attend clients in low income
areas where residents cannot pay more than
cost price for treatment and medication, and
often are not able topayat all. Clinic days|

will be divided between domestic and farm animal days in rural areas.

Any serious cases, which cannot be dealt with ‘in the field’ will be referred to the LSPCA hospital.

LSPCA UK was delighted to support this new initiative, which will reach thousands of animals per year, many of which would otherwise never have access to veterinary care. Ensuring the health and welfare of domestic and farm animals brings significant public health benefits and can help to support livelihoods of farmers.
