awareness. NECAT was fortY*d a5 a result of a review of the e¢umenical structures in the North East and a cornbining of
North East Christian Churches TOget￿r INECCTI and The Churches, Regional Commission in the Noth East ICRCNEI.
NECAT seek5 to serve the Kingdom of God in the North Eastby being a partnership of churche8 an¢J chrisb.an organk5ations
dedicated to answering the call ot Jesus Christ and workir£ e¢umeni¢ally for the ren8wal of the region through specific and
local action to briry ab)ul change forthe good.
NECAf$ aim and method of working is lo encourage and supp¢Jrt churthes to work togelhgr and with other partnets both
locally and regionalty and to identify and ￿￿ase r&sources which will bring tangible benefits espeaally to c(Ynmunitie5 and
churches worf<ing wfth vuln8rable Feople and groups. It5 process within the rich Inheritan￿ of the Chr￿tIan tradition 15 for
action-reflection aimed to about changes which will Improve the lives of people In local communit￿5 and the wion.
NECAT will offer a voi¢& forthe reg￿n and its ecum9nical wsion in national and inter-regional forums. NECATwill be about
action to encourage renewal, and the action being undertaken with others wherever possib￿ Working together will b8 a
atatyst for talking tO9ether. Refledion and analysis will follow practical actions benefittirG local communities across the

North East Churches Acting Together works to support the chur¢he$ of the North East in their r8lation$hips with
one anoif*r and in their wider m1&8ion in the wortd. Our aim is to work in partnetship and help lo encourage
partnership wotking with churches, voluntary agencies and other public bodie$. Churches Togethei Groups In the
region hold a key role in contributing to the work of the church locally. They and other Ecumenical agencies a
supported by the Regional Officer and denorninational Ecurnenical Officers who together wrth representation from
the Northern Church Leader's Group form the Ltxal Ecumenical Group ILEGI.

Vve currenNy have 72 Churches Together group5 folrnally register￿ with NECAT. these vary from large groups.
who ats in thernsefv8s sep8rate charit￿$, lo small local alliances 8nd fellowship groups. We know that churches
and Churches Together groups are finding the current posl-lockdown situation difficult. The Continued irnpact of
the pandemic has meant that many groups strUgg￿d lo rneet, had to cancel events and afe now seein9 reduced
numb8r$ of volunteor5 r8luming. After th8 Covid pandemic some group5 ar8 r8covering well, others are
8lruggling to re-establish themselves. Numbers of people a¢ces51ng Food banks hsve again increased and
groups have expanded their prowsion to provide additional support, also providing d&bl advir*, clolhing banks,
warm food and other support. other groups have responded by providing Holiday Fun and Food. working
together to provide food and ¥livities. After School or breakfast clubs or by 90ing Into local Schools to
delNer'Open th8 B￿k, sessions or Colle¢liv& Vvorship or to offer volunteer lime to support children with reading.
We recognise the good missional woik that Churche5 acting together do. the huge range of a¢tivitl95 they provid8
and give thanks for all of those who volunteer with them and support th8 work and operat￿n of their local
churches Tc¥Jether group.
Church Leador8
The North East EtAJrr*ni¢al Church Leader5 group continues to meet online to pray towth8r, discuss I(￿31 and
n8￿.￿al issues and to liaise with one another across the churches.
Reverend Paul Rev111 left his role with the Northern BaptistAssociation in the Autumn. Bishop Robert Byrne
hi5 ministry as Roman Catholic Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, to which role Bishop Stephen Wright was
appointed in June 2023. R8vd David Herbert reti￿￿. after many years service in various roles for tt)e URC in the
region. as Moderator of the URC Northern Synod and was replxed by Revd Kim Aumpton Dave ha5 been a
great supporter of our Ecumenical work across th& region. we thank him for all he has done and wish him wèll in
his future ministry. The Right Reverend H81en Ann Hartley became next Bishop of New¢88Ue and was
installed in earfy 2023.
Tees Valley Mlni8ty ITVMI
TVM is a charty Sel up to wolk in the Tees Val* to promote and supwrt workplace chaplaincy by supporbrrfj
volunteer chaplains and being an advocate of the Christan In the workplace. It has been part of NECAT SI￿ 2015
and NECAT ronts.nue to work with Regional Church leadets to discem the future direction and projects of TVM.

Revd J08nne Thoms left her post in August 2022. Joanne did a few days work in order to sustain the life of NECAT thrO￿h
the autumn of 2022 and kept an eye on phone and emaiL8 through tF* year whi15t the work of NECAT was necessari
dirninished. All involved in the ecumenical lrfe of our churches across the North E85t of England have been enomiously
grateful for the way in which Joanne ha5 SUPPOrted and arsvanced the lrfe and rni55ion of the churches over her tim8 in
office. This included the period olthe pandernic when things were p8￿culadY dfficutt for all the churches of the region, 8nd
we wete enotrnously grateful for Ihe way in 5h8 helped en￿Urage the restoration of ecumenKal church lrfe in the last
three years. We wish her well in her new post with the Diocese of Durham and we appointed a new regional officer in th8
autumn of 2023. The trustees agreed to engage Oaniel Wright on an interim hourty basls to support th8 small numbei ol
ongoing adminkstrative t85ks that were necessary.

NECAT a¢ts as the sponsoring btyjy for the lornial eCu￿niCal structure5 in the North East induding th8 Local
Ecumenical Croup which. on behalf of the denominations. is avaIlab￿ to support Local Ecumenical Partnerships
and initiate reviews. The Denominational Ecumenical Officers IDEOI and continue to meet regulady and to offer
thal support lo LEPS. Covenant Partnerships and other e¢umonical Structures. Tho number of donominational
E¢umenical offKers has redU￿tt consi¢erably. we only have one paid Olficer and two volunteer officers. This
dce5 Mean that rt is difficult to give the support that we WOL1￿ like lo and we are having to rethink the way in
which wè have worked and ar8 tying to build up a team of ￿lUnteerS ab￿ to help wth review$. The LEG has
expresse(I concern about the future 5UStainability of the group and its abilty to deliver the required SkJPPOrt and
the pos$ibilty of105s of Ecumenical experti58 as w8 look to the future. Th8 Churches Together in England toolkit,
'A New Framework for Local Unty, helps local groups ask the right questions as to what might b8 a good
partnership model lor them. enabling them to do what 15 needed wth the rninirnal amount of bureaucfacy, but
ensurin9 the right d¢xumentatK)n ts in plac8 to support t￿l￿work and f8llow5hip.
PrepariTrJ for the aPP￿ntrnent of a new regional offKer has tthen quite a large part of Ihe year and we made the
appoinkn8nt in Autumn 2023 for a siart in January 2024. This has rneant that involvement in Chur¢he$ Together
in England has necessarily been much less but we expectlhis to be restored in 2024 wth the appointment of a
n8w Regional Officer. Similarty relations￿p with eoJmenic21 bod￿8, synods and intsr-church activ￿"e$ will be
vived in 2024.

Norlh East Churche$ Ading Together is Committed to Wotking in partnership and tyiry to operate a5 a link or
build networks between different ¢hurche$ and denominatrorts and between Churches and otf*r agon¢￿$.

The NECAT truste85 have aclivety considered the best way forward for NECAT and for the Regional Officer role
and advertising for the p05t went out in the Summer of 2023. The Trustees appointed a Regional Officer in the
ALrtumn of 2023 with the supportth8 regional Ecurnanical Church Leader8 Group.
We have been kin¢Yly arKY expertly served for ten years Sin￿ the launch of NECAT by Mr Danny Pigeon as
NECAT Treasu￿[, who ha5 announced an intentson lo sta￿j down at th8 next AGM. We will therefore be seeking
Someone wth relevant experienit to ￿￿a¢* Danny as a Tru5toe from earfy 2024.
