Annual Report
For Hawthorn Community Centre, as with all other aspects of normal life, the year ended 31[st] March 2021 was dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Centre was closed for the majority of this period except for a brief period between September and December 2020 when a limited number of activities went ahead under strict Covid-19 regulations. In this context, the Management Committee continued to meet on a regular basis to ensure the safe and successful running of the Centre.
The majority of decisions taken and expenditure relate to upkeep and maintenance of the building with the following items of note:

Extensive repair and renovation to the outbuildings and resurfacing of the tarmac floor. The costs were covered by a grant from Awards for All.

Painting of the main hall, committee room and kitchen.

April 2020, electrical work was carried out to feed electricity to the outbuildings and improve outside lighting.

November 2020, plaster from a section of internal failed and fell into the main hall. This was repaired and the plaster removed & repaired from a further section of ceiling as a precautionary measure.
Activities in the period were limited:

We were very happy to see Carol White continue to use the Centre for her Art & Painting Classes

The Halloween Pumpkin Trail was very popular. Thank you to Emma and Jayne for their hard work organising this.

The Yoga & Bootcamp fitness classes ran in the months the Centre was able to open.

East Durham Trust ran activity sessions aimed to relieve social isolation as a result of the pandemic.
We were sorry to see Joanne Irwing resign from the Management Committee. Over many years Joanne was the backbone of community support for the Centre and put a lot of time and effort into many activities. The Management Committee would like to thank Joanne for her dedication over many years.
In December the Management Committee agreed to waive the usual £5 annual membership fees for the year commencing January 2021. This will be reviewed in December 2021.
Some of our regular activities have now re-started. As always, the Committee would like to appeal to more people in the local area and host a wider range of activities and events. We continue to promote existing activities and seek new ideas from members, through Facebook and in the Parish Council Newsletter. Again, it will be no surprise to mention that we are always seeking support from new volunteers and new Management Committee members. If you are interested please speak to any of the current Committee members or email louisemurray@virgin.net.
As a reminder the Centre is available for private hire: £10 per hour for members and £15 per hour for nonmembers.
On behalf of the Management Committee I would like to thank Hawthorn Parish Council and our County Councillors for their ongoing support.
In conclusion, the Centre is now open for business as usual following a difficult year.
