Trustee Report

For The Year Ended 31 March 2023

The Trustees present their report and financial statements for the period ended 31 March 2023. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with accounting policies set out in note 1 to the accounts and comply with the Charity’s trust deed.

Structure, Governance and Management

Governing Document

The Charity was set up on 9[th] May 2014 and is registered with the Charity Commission, registration number 1157000.

Appointment of Trustees

Trustee positions are approached personally or advertised for. We have a clear procedure for the recruitment of Trustees and appointment of Trustees are appointed by the Board of Trustees, which is confirmed at the Annual General Meeting, normally held in October. All trustees are DBS checked in line with our safeguarding policies, and references are collected. All trustees are supplied with appropriate information ahead of their considered application for Trusteeship, and are appointed in line with the charity’s constitution.

Organisation, Structure and Process

The Board of Trustees meet regularly to fulfil their key role and function of overseeing and directing the affairs of the Charity, ensuring that it is well-run and delivering the charitable outcomes for which it is established. One of those meetings comprises of the ‘Annual General Meeting’ where trustees review their overall strategy for the charity, review of previous year and set priorities for the following year. The trustees entrust day to day management of the Charity to the ‘Fundraising Lead’ who delegates through the small staff team.

Public Benefit Statement

In setting our programme each year we have regard to both the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and prevention and relief of poverty for the public benefit. The trustees always ensure that the programmes we undertake are in line with our charitable objectives and aims.

Charity Objectives

To advance the education of pupils in the school, in particular;

  1. Developing effective relationships between the staff, parents and others associated with the school (The Collett);

  2. Engaging in activities or providing facilities or equipment which support the school and advance the education of pupils.

Results

The results for this year, as given in the Statement of Financial Activities, are considered satisfactory by the trustees. Trustees acknowledged that this year has been challenging since the main fundraising team moved on for new adventures.

The trustees have examined the major strategic, business and operational risks which the charity faces and confirm that systems have been established to engage reports to be produced so that the necessary steps can be taken to lessen these risks.

Review of The Year

Over the past year Friends of Collett has not been as active as we would like due to the main fundraising team moving onto new and exciting adventures. This has unfortunately impacted on fundraising and charity activities. We have however, successfully raised funds to provide music therapy, science experiments and classroom kitchen areas.

Music Therapy

Music benefits many people in different ways. We all know that people listen to music to reduce stress, improve their mood, relieve anxiety and depression, but did you know that music can also improve learning, boost creativity, protect brain health, regulate the nervous system and boost your immune system. The pupils at The Collett School benefit from these and many more. Music therapy takes place in small groups and individuals. It brings together intellect and feelings which enables personal expression and emotional development. The pupils improve their communication, cognitive skills, memory and concentration, all whilst having fun playing different instruments.

Science Experiments

We have been fortunate enough to fund a science provision again this year which has helped the pupils engage. What better than unusual and existing experiments to engage the pupils. It has made a real difference to the pupils learning and engagement.

Kitchen Areas

We all wish for our children to be independent, to be able to make a drink, a snack, to be able to keep themselves and their environment clean and tidy. All the pupils at The Collett School start from a young age learning the skills needed to do these

things. One of the best ways is to have facilities available to them all the time. This is why The Friends of Collett has proudly funded for kitchen areas to be fitted in the classrooms.

Friends of Collett

Some classrooms already had old kitchen areas that required improvement but for other classes we had to create kitchen areas. Each classroom now has a sink with running hot and cold water, a draining board and storage cupboards. By having these areas in their classrooms, the pupils are able to make drinks (hot and cold) and snacks with assistance and guidance. This will lead on to them later being able to make them independently. Part of preparing drinks and snacks is cleaning up after themselves, so washing up facilities are available and fully equipped. The kitchen facilities not only provide the pupils with the prospect of learning life skills, it also creates opportunities for communication, dexterity and boosting selfconfidence.

The charity wishes to thank all those who have so generously supported its work whether by gift or their time, talents, products or financial donations.

Plans for The Future

Friends of Collett, supports The Collett School which forms part of The Blue Tangerine Federation, a federation of Specialist and Special Educational Needs Schools in Hertfordshire. Each school within The Blue Tangerine Federation, has a registered ‘Friends Of’ charity. We had previously hoped that from 1[st] July 2022 the ‘Friends Of’ charities would combine and be known as Friends of The Blue Tangerine Federation. Unfortunately this was not possible due to unforeseen circumstances and the charities still operate independently.

During the coming financial year, Friends of Collett hope to raise funds to enable The Collett School to continue to provide music therapy, develop the cookery room to allow height adjustable working areas and improve accessibility across the site. We will also continue to provide additional funds to support our children within the classroom by providing additional classroom resources, sensory equipment and specialist IT equipment and programmes.
