## **Liverpool Mathematical Society Bursary Fund (Charity no. 1156909) Annual Report 1 August 2023 – 31 July 2024** 

The Liverpool Mathematical Society Bursary Fund is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation whose only members are the trustees. 

The Secretary and Treasurer of the Liverpool Mathematical Society are ex officio trustees. In addition, there are at least three appointed trustees. New trustees may be appointed by a properly convened meeting of the existing trustees. The current trustees are Mr Anthony Carter, Dr Ian Jarman, Dr Charlie Devlin (Secretary, LivMS), Mr Michael Jones, Mr Kenneth McKelvie, Mr Chris Marchant (Treasurer, LivMS), Mr Lonnie Readioff and Ms Davina Stanley.

Although hosted by the University of Liverpool, the charity is a completely independent organisation. 

The charity's objective is the advancement of mathematical education through the award of bursaries to teachers, student teachers and pupils in schools to support activities for which funds are not otherwise available. Applications are made online through the charity's webpage at 

http://www.livmathssoc.org.uk/cgi-bin/sews.py?JoyceHattonMemorialBursaries. For the year 2023 – 24, there were application deadlines on 31[st] October, 29[th] February (extended from 31[st] January), 31[st] May and 31[st] July. 

Only 2 applications were received during the year, of which 1 was awarded and 1 was rejected due to the applicant failing to provide additional information requested. The 1 successful application was held over until next year. This was to support the purchase of mathematical resources for an outdoor play area. 

2 bursaries awarded in a previous year and held over were paid out. The 2 bursaries paid out totalled £400. 

The opening balance for the year was £7063.60. Expenditure on bursaries was £400. There was also a payment of £60.00 for bank charges. The closing balance was £6603.60.
